Rafferty, Gerry - Waiting For The Day Lyrics

Well here I am, back in town
Just as the night is comin' down
Warm wind blowin' through the trees
I watch them swing, I watch them sway
Lie here waiting for the day.

Sleep won't come, I need a drink
Stop my head, don't wanna think
Wishing I could be with you
But I know you're so far away
And I'm here waiting for the day.

Water of life pour your light down on me
Take me out of this darkness, sweet star of the sea
Water so sweet you can open my eyes
You can bring down the rain on this desert so dry.

Out on the street, shadows fall
Silence speaks, I hear it call
City of the living dead
Count the lights on the motorway
Lie here waiting for the day (alright).

Water of life pour your light down on me
Take me out of this darkness, sweet star of the sea
Water so sweet you can open my eyes
You can bring down the rain on this desert so dry.

Yes here I am, back in town
Just as the night is comin' down
Warm wind blowin' through the trees
I watch them swing, I watch them sway
Lie here waiting for the day (alright)

  1. D.... C....

Jack Bruce (RIP) performed this number at the Gerry Rafferty tribute concert in Glasgow back in 2012.

    Great music.

  3. J.... L....

    Timeless...

  4. w.... ....

    LOVE IT

So incredible creative. I like the 2 moments he says "Alright". That's where we find Gerry so confident as never before. Confident about his music, his singing, his composing. Love it. Thank you Scotland for this son. From Holland

Also love the keyboard work on this track by Tommy Eyre (RIP).

The whole album is a masterpiece, but the softer-sounding interlude here of "Water of life, pour your light down on me" is one of the most sparkling and profound moments in the history of pop music--or any music. To me, it is a prayer, a plea for the quenching of a mankind's deepest longings, yet is rendered musically with a level of dignity, humility, and even hope that for a moment makes the artist a combination of poet, prophet, and everyman. The combination of lyrics, voice, and accompaniment here was one of many shimmering islands of aesthetic and conceptual beauty Gerry Rafferty gave us in the 1970s and 80s, raising our spirits beyond the familiar and mundane, and showing us glimpses of something true, eternal, and transcendent. Like all great art, this will still speak to humanity many generations from now.

This album was and remains one of the top five recorded in the seventies. When considering the musical content of that decade City To City stands out as supreme work.

  8. A.... 2....

My favorite part is when it calms down and starts singing water of life

  9. M.... ....

possibly one of my favorite short guitar solos

  10. S.... S....

The back side of this album was my "play while going to sleep" for almost a year.

  11. E.... P....

Muy buen música con guitarra.Pena que el sonido no es lo mejor,es muy bajo.

  12. D.... C....

Brilliant album cover artwork by his old Paisley friend, writer/artist John Patrick Byrne.

  13. D.... C....

The album City to City was his masterpiece (but his entire back catalogue is well worth checking out). Caught him in concert back in 1993 and he opened with this song.

    D.... C....

Saw him twice in 1993,Nottingham and Manchester.
    Top songwriter of all time.

    D.... C....

Glasgow. Seems like yesterday. Shame he didn't perform live more as he was an outstanding musician. I'd defo put him in the same league as Lennon and McCartney. He wasn't dissimilar to Macca (always being a perfectionist in the studio). I read somewhere that McCartney sent him a telegram (back in the days before email) congratulating him on his huge success with the single Baker Street. He could have been a superstar if hed toured the States back then (but it just wasn't him). His first solo album, Can I Have My Money Back is a forgotten gem in his catalogue.

    D.... C....

    Got all his solo albums.

Hard to choose which is my favourite as I like them all.

He just wrote songs that I liked.

He could have been a superstar but had no wish for that and we benefited from all the great songs.

When Gerry decides to ramp it up, he really rocks. Awesome song.

  15. 7.... ....

Somebody please enlighten me on why this song was never a single. This song ROCKS!! Of course, it's that musical genius known as Gerry Rafferty.

    757scott ,
Disco still ruled the airwaves, yet not my turntable.

  16. b.... d....

    Hugh Burns blazing guitar solo.

    b.... d....

    blah deBlah
So so true. Those guitar solos are just so........perfect. So beautifully perfect it moves me to tears every time I hear this song.

  17. m.... ....

an under rated artist no doubt.

  18. I.... E....

this man helped me through my life with his song's this one more

  19. C.... ....

Great album.  Not a bad cut in the lot

  20. M.... ....

I think I might actually like this more than Baker Street.

    M.... ....

@MrDuncanBelfast I like this WAY better than the remix on the compilation albums. :)

    M.... ....

    +MrDuncanBelfast 100% agreed

    M.... ....

For all the success he had with "Baker Street," "Night Owl" is actually my favorite song of his (plus the fact it reached #5 in the UK), and this song is also high on my list.

    M.... ....

I actually prefer the single version of Night Owl. The album version has an extra verse which doesn't really add anything to the song. Hopefully Night Owl (album) will get remastered like City to City (eventually!)

  21. M.... M....

This version of the track is faster than the original - I think it makes it 10 times better though...

    M.... M....

    @Matts Mom Yes!! :D

    M.... M....

yeah there remastered it when they did the CD and they spread it up for some reason I think the original tapes when they tried to remaster this whole album failed on this particular song only cuz the rest of it's the same exact speed I have this CD

  22. S.... ....

PROB MY MOST LOVED SONG BY GERRY! :) ...ITS SO UPBEAT & BEAUTIFULLY MADE!...!!!CANT HELP BUT LOVE IT!!!...THANK YOU GERRY! :)

    S.... ....

    SCOTTMCKAY1982 ,
    You are not alone.
The lyrics and short guitar solo hooked me.

  23. R.... R....

Another gem from City to City! GR is so much more than Baker Street!

  24. s.... c....

    freckin brilliant!!!

  25. B.... A....

Listened to this song on 8 track in our 69 Malibu! Great album!

  26. L.... ....
