Public Image Ltd. - Fat Chance Hotel Lyrics
With the fly in my eye
It didn't take long
To realise
The desert sun
Might be good for some
Fat Chance Hotel, Fat Chance Hotel
I get bored in the brain
Out here, doing nothing at all
Some useless holiday
This turned out to be
The dinner gave me
The splattery botty
Burning, all day long
I, I don't belong,
Itching in frustration
This, is not my ideal vacation
Fat Chance Hotel, Fat Chance Hotel

The guitar work by John McGeogh is beyond extraordinary. I was lucky enough to hear and see the tour launched to support this LP. Very colorful and brilliant musicianship start to finish.
David George yeah, it’s a great tune.
He just knows what good beats that work sound like. I read they got sent to learn about African drum beats in the early days.
Immortal Fool they definitely got it right with this song.
prophet VS synth was first synth to plot four different sounds on a compass joystick ,,, ANYTHING on north ANYTHING on south ANYTHING west ANYTHING on east , then the joystick could absolutely seamlessly pass through these four sounds , i could never afford a synthesizer , especially , one of the "Prophets" , from sequential circuits , a the point of time , sequential circuits released the Prophet VS ( Vector Synthesis , as described above ) , for two grand a pop ,( you could buy a house for four grand in Crewe at that time , in 86 , and the Prophet 2000 , a sample based synth , that could use ANY sonic source as a waveform , instead of the previous , square wave , saw wave and sine wave , they were also 2 grand each ., i used to read about them , and deream of owning one , ... THIS IS 100 PER CENT TRUE , this next bit , ... went to see Pil , at Hanley Vic. Hall , ( great venue , its the one inside sabbaths Vol4 , booklet release , photographing the audience facing sabbath from behind sabbath , ... i digress , but was an excellent venue , you could smoke dope , sit on the floor , no-one gave a crap , really ace venue ... walked in , ...STAGE . mic in the center , AND , no Bullshit , a Prophet VS , LEFT OF THE MIC , AND A PROPHET 200 RIGHT OF THE MIC , ... drummer came on in a suit and briefcase , took his coat off , put his briefcase down , 1 2 3 4 , GO !!! , THE LIGHTING WAS GREEN , AND jOHN LYDEN HAD BRIGHT ORANGE HAIR , with an alter type thing , reading the lyrics from this Huge book throughout , the lights got greener and oranger subtly as the night progressed , the gig finished , the drummer put his coat back on , picked up his briefcase , and walked from the stage , .... PUBLIC IMAGE LIMITED , PUT EVERYTHING INTO THEIR MUSIC , THEY DELIVER THE FUCKING BEST , THE BEST MUSICIANS ON THE PLANET AT THE TIME , MADE "ALBUM" , AND The "TOUR" tour , was musically , OUTSTANDING , with the worlds best , most cutting edge technology too , ... PiL DELIVER , John Lyden , uses the best people , the best tech and works very very hard , to give you that , ... this is also true and , i thimk shows his commitment , John Lyden , couldnt hit a note , if he tried , yet somehow sings like no-one else , with passion as his weapon , i know for a fact he had operatic singing lessons for this, the "HAPPY?" L.P. , to project his voice to get more power , clarity and strength , ... listen to the way he sings on this album , he rolls his R's , EVERY WORD IS SO ABSOLOUTLY CLEAR , ... AND ALSO .. LAST THING , THE Guitar , After the "FAT CHANCE HOTEL " chorus/line ,... Shows just how fantastic Vector Synthesis was , the guitar seamlessly goes from a plectrum scaping through the strings and somehow , ends as a trumpet fanfare , .... REALLY WONDERFUL STUFF . Sorry about the rant , but a spectacular piece of hard work , is worth a bit of a rant , Pil ... TRUE ARTISTS , NOT Bullshitters .
4:41 'hidden' track
How do you listen to this and think flippy supermarket 'rock' is worth listening to?
John McGeogh He conjured up the most sublime textures and beautiful effects I've ever heard on a guitar. Hope his daughter knows how highly he is regarded and what he meant to his many fans.
I’m loving this song on a Friday afternoon!
Glad you enjoyed it.
Such a great group.....Such a great song.....
Drank snakebite made of champagne and special brew at the Venue in Victoria with McGeogh and Severin in 81 at a Spizz Oil gig, our guitar player was asked to join PIL but turned em down because they were to weird 🤣
Fucking Classic!!!!!
Paddy Campbell this one sounds better. https://youtu.be/97wUh-i6gHc
After the "fat chance hotel" lyric/words , there is a grinding guitar slide , that somehow ends up in a trumpet fanfare
.. Now That's What I Call Music...
I think it's Mariachi
@desmoface thank you sooooooo much mate ACE
@desmoface PROOF AT LAST VINYL VS DIGITAL REPRODUCTION sorry for the caps but that is sooooo farking REAL
@wayne titus Hi Mr. Titus, glad you enjoyed it. Did you prefer the Vinyl over the Digital? But wait, there's more https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GD3Q5CbLR5g
The musicianship on this album is non-existent. Absolutely abysmal.
sexobscura Interesting in that Captain Jellico said, and I quote: “The musicianship on this album is way underrated. Absolutely amazing.” I suspect both of you can’t be right? Can you both be wrong?
@desmoface - uh oh, two world's colliding!
i was at The Hollywood Palladium show for this tour . The Dickies opened ! one great show !!!!!!!!! the stage design was running-ramps and the band was running around while playing wireless !!!!! stunning fun !!!!
Yess..can my band open for ya???!!!💃🕺💣💥📿
Great tune - Great album - Great band
Goosebumps. Forgot about this song and the nice instrumental part. Very soothing.
It is a real toe tapper.
I know!!!!
The instrumental at the end kind of sneaks up on you. It's like a bonus mini-song.
@Ken H It does too 😉
@Paddy Campbell - five months later update: the instrumental at the end appears to be a call back to the song "Save Me" from earlier in the album.
i listened to this album over and over while reading alternative comic books instead of going to high school
good for you. you didn't miss much.
How did you turn up now?
One of PIL's best albums . .
R.I.P John McGeoch.
John McGeoch.
The musicianship on this album is way underrated. Absolutely amazing.
John McGeoch – guitar
Lu Edmonds – guitar, keyboards
Allan Dias – bass
Bruce Smith – drums
?? Who's underrating it?? Do we care about such people anyway?
@Alexander Draper - People like music. Thus, people care about the people who make the music they like.
The theme guitar riff at the beginning of this song seems similar to Keith Levene's work on "Public Image" (the song).
I will be seeing them live tomorrow and after the show I will be able to die happy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! just like the album?
cannfodder1 I know your comment is a year old but tell me did their performance "rise" to the occasion.
This. Fucking. Cooks.
I remember back in 87 or 88 this came out--haven't changed my thoughts about it--still a cracking good PIL song.
SOME USELESS HOLIDAY-----
This song have a taste of mariachi music with those trumpets, haha !
I love this album so much!
I've felt that for thirty years, I'm afraid it will always be, damn shame!!
I tuned in because the song title is so cool
Its actually my favorite from the album.
This is the best song of this record. Lot of memories...
I never saw the 100 Club gig or any of their subsequent gigs. But I have seen the band that John Lydon said there would never have been any Sex Pistols had he not heard them. If you know PiL/Pistols history that well (as well as going to the 100 Club) you know who I'm on about. If you don't it doesn't matter as the music is here and it changed me as a youth. Cutting off my hair indeed tsk... Cheers for the uploads :)
Not another who was at the '100 Club'gig? That takes it to about 2million people there that night!
He was OK.I've loved John McGeochs style & sound since Magazine & The Banshees.Hes a very underated guitarist as well as being so influential. This album is great.
Yes, John McGeoch! That man made this band. He had such a beautiful way of playing and was somehow not credited with his brilliance.
Hmmm... Technically Steve Vai was the best, but heck - I love 'em all!
Vai and Lydon on the same record.. A FUCKING DREAM. Two geniuses together . Ease is a Masterpiece. If I could, I would jerk off to it. Cheers from France!!!
thank you for posting this...cheers
i can't believe that anyone with internet access can access this musical briliance and still opt for some voice or some shit that encompasses such a small percentage of music in the entire world. nothing against the contestants, but when i watch other folks in my house watch the voice and then play this, everything outside of this song alone sounds stupid to me in the moment. again, nothing against the voice or what not but with all the beautiful stuff out there and within reach, what the hell?
I seriously can't believe it's been that long. This sounds extremely modern... and way better than most of what passes for music today!
J'suis sous le choc ... encore une bone chanson de PiL, avec plusieurs sujets : Des vacances râtés (this is not my ideal vacation / I get bored in the brain), la chiasse de John Lydon (the dinner gave me the splattery botty) et un hotel (Fat chance hotel) I LOVE IT !!!!
This album still sounds great
John Mc Geochs guitaring on this album is fucking great.Still, the bes PIL gutarist..Sorry Mr Levine......lol
This tune is an unbelievable testament to what can be accomplished musically. Save Me of course was a scorcher as well.
one of my fav pil lp's.its a masterpeice lost in a load of 80's bollocks.
I am happy (pun intended) to be fooled by this "Over polished turd". This 'OPT' was better than 90% of the other music around at the time, and the album still sounds great. It's a shame you cannot appreciate it, but that's your loss. Go and listen to "Flowers of romance" and cry about what could have been if it makes you feel better.
It was an over polished turd. That's all and nothing more. Yes, every PiL album was different to the one before but Happy? was vapid and hollow. Lydon made a lot of noise about nothing and was fooling no one. Apart from you that is!
This was the album that got me into PIL - It was the perfect mix of angst, well-crafted tunes and lush production. Every PIL album is different, this was John's attempt at re-creating a full-band line up and you can really hear the influence of the incoming musicians. Dias & McGeoch with Lydon was a absolute killer combination, and its shame it stopped when it did.
ps. france and england both win tonight in euro2012 (i am english) good luck.
1.06-1.10 love that bit.
I forgot how good this track was, i had this album on cassette many moons ago,,, fucking great song.
Your welcome mate, ;=]
a "splattery botty" is shit comming out of your anus , wich is very wet and runny ,so it splatters all over the toilet bowl.
I'm italian and it's the first time I realize what it is. Thanks for your explanation. After more than 30 yrs I finally know what it means ;)
I don't know how old u people are but I saw the Pistols and I saw PIL Johny rocks and you dumbfucks can keep thinking you are punkers but you are just wannabes.
Aside from "Seattle" which I really like and maybe "The Body", this album is a real stinker. I remember my mate Johnny who was/is as big a PiL fan as me (only less discerning!), saying apropos "Happy?"; 'You've got to take it for what it is'. He was right too, it was a steaming turd then and it still is now. Yes, "Album" was shiny and produced too but he still sounded like he meant it rather than sounding like a self parody. Along with "Don't ask me", surely the low point of Lydon"s career.
it was on the cassette tape, as I recall.
Happy was a cracking album..loved it 25 years ago..love it now....wrote off my first car while listening to the tape!
Crap! Someone had a live version of this on Youtube, and I see now it's gone. Should've downloaded it when I had the chance.
You didn't have a FAT chance at downloading it, I guess.
@ttonky I had the tape, and from what I remember, this was the last song, side 2.... :)
This album is amazing
Fat chance hoteeeeeeeeeeel!
@Boltivator I shall kind sir. Tally ho and all that. Pip Pip Cheerio.
@Boltivator Really?
@desmoface I like Some Lady Ga Ga is great cause she is funny and witty, katy Perry is just fun to look at. I like Adele, but the 303's and all that makes me ill.
@MrCorpserot The Solution, in your case, is quite simple. Don't listen to it!!
Just what rock needed. Too much over saturation of pop hullabollu. garbage.
gawd...AINT HERD THIS ENDING B4MINE ENDS @ 4;45. FREAKIE ASS SHEET.........
@ttonky I have the album version. ..and yes it is. ; )
@marywanna1000 Ditto
one of my favorite pil songs
@ttonky This is off of the cd..not sure about the album version.
@notdeadjustlazy In my mind, it's an elephant
"The dinner gave me the splattery botty."
hallo, this sentence has always caught me. But I have always found it to translate into italian "splattery botty". Could you give me a hint? Thanks
fat chance hoteeeeeeeeeeeeel
i ALSO suffer WITH only THE lp VERSION of THIS album, WHICH i HAPPEN to LOVE. thanks FOR posting!
AND all MY credit CARDS, and ALL my MONEY, hahehahehaheh!!!
Wow, I have this LP! One of my fav tunes JR did.
Man I haven't heard this in years!!
I've only got the LP version of this album.
Thanks for posting.
This song needs a video - very 'visual', musically speaking....
