Public Image Ltd. - Careering Lyrics

A face is raining
Across the border
The pride of history
The same as murder
Is this living
He's been careering
The steady hand as planned
Behind the reasoning
No claim for property
Both sides of the river
There is bacteria
Is this living
He's been careering
Trigger machinery
Mangle the military
No one should be there
Is this living
Blown into breeze
Scatter concrete
The jagged metal bad life
Manufactured
He's been careering
Is this living
A face is raining
Across the border
The pride of history
The same as murder
Is this living careering
There must be meaning
Behind the moaning
Spreading tales
Like coffin nails
Is this living
He's been careering
It's raining
I need to hide
Trigger machinery
I've been careering
Across the border
Is this living
Both sides of the river
There is bacteria
Armoured machinery mangled

  1. moustachesteph

    Post punk.

  2. Jake Fettes

I read that Keith Levine was trying to mimic the sound the pipes in the recording studio made when someone flushed the toilet with the synthesizer on this song

  3. Ipostle

You left off the word of prophesy at the end.

  4. Duke de PallMall

This is how to play the synthesizer

  5. Philippe Cirse

Lydon uses his voice as an instrument, the album summarizes the mood of the group that seems to sink into deep vices. It's the sound of a band without a future, even if the powerful sonorities will later influence all kinds of musical experiments for the coming decades :-)

  6. danfotoman

back in 1980 i thought this was the best song in the universe. i think it still is

  7. David Ellis

The percussion & Bass were completely new in 1979. Shit hot track.

    David Mentalist

    What about Joy Division

  8. Kelly14UK

Hey. That's a fuckin good song.

  9. carla

    the rapture echo is quaking

  10. ladyi7609

When I heard this song and "Poptones" performed (well, "performed") on an "American Bandstand" rerun in the mid '90s, it led me to purchasing a copy of Second Edition. Still one of the best musical decisions I've ever made, and perhaps my musical bridge from punk to post-punk.

  11. RossBayCult

    This is a GREAT bassline.

  12. Rock & Roll Music

Brilliant. The way it builds as it gets towards the end is great.

  13. Ba Skeddi

Jah Wobble+Keith Levine+J.Lydon= Excellent. Shame they could not have continued a bit longer, this i the best PIL incarnation.

  14. barry debsky

    too close . . . >cough< . . .RR . . .I'm taking this very personally

  15. low ceiling

    the ending always scares me

  16. JasonTheWorldisYours

I really like the bass line

    @ColoredSpaces

  17. RED D

I dunno why, but I always thought this song was about 'the troubles'

    TrainInVain

That would be because of the lyrics

  18. spacetoob

    iconic track nonetheless!

  20. genki2genki

It's deadly good. Shades of Pere Ubu too.

  21. Shannon M

    who would've thunk....

    Leslie Schmidt

it's johnny w/ yet another rotten day! XOX

  22. Carlos Morón

    Is this living

  23. hilvldruid

    RIP Lemmy

    DimaStardust

    +hilvldruid who give a fuck

    Robert Shields

+UraniumVodka I do...he was one of the best bassists ever! And he was very charismatic.

  24. texashsad

...AND YOU DONT STOP TO PUNK ROCK.......

    offisk dahl

+texashsad I am taking the time now to punk rock!

  25. Charles Moore

I suppose the queen would say this gets the gristle throbbing? Probs not much though

  26. MrKayley10

The live Whistle Test version blows this out of the water completely, IMNSHO.

    MisAnnThorpe

Not in my not so honest opinion. This is the definitive version.

    mr_tulip

    You mean not so humble?
Well, I see this as the definitive version too. Imperious and magisterial, just such a towering achievement. OGWT was absolutely stunning though, proving they could get the whole thing across live. Annie Nightingale was utterly blown away too...I remember she said something afterwards about it being the most important thing she'd ever witnessed on the show.

    MisAnnThorpe

Yes, I meant humble! I belong to the supposed minority who believe that Flowers of romance and not Metal Box, was their magnum opus (whatever that means!) though. I think not having a bass player after Wobble's departure led them to take a completely different approach to making music. Under the house sounds like it's come from a different and even more frightening world.

    Ba Skeddi

    Yes it does!

  27. Ashley Webb

The synth on this tune is soooo dark. Really shifts it all off kilter. :-)

  28. Tomguild1

I have always found it so hard to belive Wobble was a begining bassist

  29. lewisner

Damn I had forgotten this! It goes straight on my phone.

  30. Franklin Ryan

INSPIRED JOHNNY. Check out Frank Ryan on F/b for a brilliant potential re-mix

  31. whipchorus

    What a fucking bassline.

Seriously one of the best in any song, ever.

    paulph12002

    That's Jah Wobble for you.

    ZeeDDD65

    I can't hear the bassline

  32. Greg Sestero

I think "first edition" and "commercial zone" are both better than never mind the bollocks. Post Keith Levene PiL is unlistenable though.

  33. pashley1411

PIL's most memorable tune, err, off-tune.

  34. Nalinho

I'm only a Zygote and I fucking love this

  35. MC Escher

    that voice

  36. JDsmiffy1

Fantastic record - sounds brilliant on the 3 x 12" vinyls turned up as loud as possible! One of my favourite post punk albums.

  37. ocpd23

That sounds about right. Box/2nd edition is a masterpiece.

  38. rhys graham

This song never got the fame it deserved.

  39. hoegis

maybe 60 years ahead of its time

  40. barri jill zahn

Dark and haunting- like a dancing dark cloud

  41. David Gauthier

    who gives a fuck

  42. iamnotcoolandproud

The only PiL album that surpasses the quality of Never Mind the Bollocks. Still prefer them to the Pistols by a mile though.

    MisAnnThorpe

Everything from First Issue up to and including "Album" is superior to Never mind the bollocks.

  43. tanpiltanpil

Genius. pure and simple. From when I first heard it in 1979 and today in 2012. One of the greatest non rock songs ever.......

  44. Dilzappa Zappa

aug 1 PIL at sub89 in reading - see you there

  45. Fabian Rothschilde

Nobody, not even the band, thought that UK Subs were cutting edge.

  46. RED D

and to think, people were still thinking the uk subs were cutting edge when this album was released...

  47. Craig Beasley

Here is 1979. Think about where [you] are now. Musicians try to convey... sentiment in their music. It all sounds so ..desparate and lonely! By 2009 this sound had become revelatory. PiL only had a few great moments. I remember when it was released in the US. My mom and sis thoroughly and roundly told me to

  57. rarebully

  60. Oroborus
