You don't NEED it, but I think it would have been cool and it's kind of a waste opportunity. The cord is already symbolism itself also, so there could still be symbolism even if they included it.

The way my sunday school teacher explained it was that the crimson cord is our tie to Jesus. Jesus is holding that cord even when we weigh it down with sins and hate. You can get farther and farther from jesus, but you can always come back. Even when your sins are so great that the cord causes him to bleed (when he died on the cross for us). He still holds on to that cord for us. In the bible it says no matter how great your sins, you can still be saved through Jesus. This is supported by the symbol at the end. The petal in the flower was coming off from the rest them, It still had a bit of attachment. Even though it was no longer a part of the flower, It could always come back to the rest of the flower by the Crimson Cord.

I've watched this video plenty of times now... and I think I finally get it. Prop is playing the role of God/Jesus and the point of the black paper is how everything looks dark and random but the red paper shows love and that there's a point. All of the words on the red paper are showing how we are missing God's hand in everything "Joy we misplaced", "Beautiful Mistakes" and so on. The people are looking around at all this chaos in their lives, (being the black paper) all the problems, all the while God (Prop) is trying to show them by throwing the red papers out to them that he's got his hand in all this and there's a purpose. This continues in various ways and forms and then finally at the end when you step back and you look back on the big picture of your life, you see that it was designed. All the events that happened... every single one was part of a purposeful design, you just couldn't see it because your focus was on the chaos.

I think the crimson cord is the red line that runs from genesis to revelation. The story of redemption and the promise of a savior and concluded with that savior coming again. From start to finish it's all about Jesus.

What does he mean by Crimson Cord? Crimson for blood I think... So the blood of Jesus... But what about the cord?

I think it's a reference to Rahab's crimson cord.

Rahab was a prostitute that was praised for her faith in Hebrews 11. The theme of the song, and probably the album, is seeing our past and our sins as marks of God's relentless and unending grace towards sinners.

@Josh Hill Thanks! It makes a bit more sense now! I'm haven't got to hebrews yet so that's why I don't know about it. On my way there though, not too far now.

Also the story actual story is in the book of Joshua. Two Hebrew spies gave her a red scarlet to hang outside of her window so that her and her family would be saved from warfare that was coming to their land.

The "crimson cord" in the Bible is what Christians refer to the line of promises and generations that lead to Jesus.  
A broader picture of what happened in Rahab's life is that she married into an Israelite family, namely Judah's. Rahab's marriage to Salmon (Matthew 1:5) led to a son named Boaz who married a Moabite woman, Ruth (sound familiar?), to whom was born Obed, father to Jesse, father to King David. Jesus came from the line of David, and is whom all God's promises lead to.
 

If you read the history of the generations of Judah (great grandson of Abraham), you will marvel how the line continued. I'm not sure if Propaganda had this idea of Judah messing up and God still keeping His Word, but I'd like to think so.

WOW! What a powerful song/message in itself and how all the things we will go through and have gone through that Jesus paid it all for us on the cross and all we have to do is come to Him and He will forgive us of our wrong doings:)
