Procol Harum - A Whiter Shade Of Pale Lyrics

We skipped the light fandango
turned cartwheels 'cross the floor
I was feeling kinda seasick
but the crowd called out for more
The room was humming harder
as the ceiling flew away
When we called out for another drink
the waiter brought a tray
And so it was that later
as the miller told his tale
that her face, at first just ghostly,
turned a whiter shade of pale
She said, 'There is no reason
and the truth is plain to see.'
But I wandered through my playing cards
and would not let her be
one of sixteen vestal virgins
who were leaving for the coast
and although my eyes were open
they might have just as well've been closed
She said, 'I'm home on shore leave,'
though in truth we were at sea
so I took her by the looking glass
and forced her to agree
saying, 'You must be the mermaid
who took Neptune for a ride.'
But she smiled at me so sadly
that my anger straightway died
If music be the food of love
then laughter is its queen
and likewise if behind is in front
then dirt in truth is clean
My mouth by then like cardboard
seemed to slip straight through my head
So we crash-dived straightway quickly
and attacked the ocean bed

  21. R.... F....

Absolutely one of the greatest songs of the era--I didn't understand it then, and I don't now...

    R.... F....

It was supposed to be about the sinking of the titanic from what i've heard

  22. c.... ....

This is a symphony, and the crap played nowadays is garbage.

  23. F.... I....

the mv is 144p but the music is 8k

  24. R.... D....

Bad times back then. A war, hardcore drugs, and now bullshit trying to describe those times as "consciousness raising"; bullshit from people who weren't there.

  25. L.... D....

Les. Plus beau slow des années 60 🍒

  26. J.... H....

Been a long time since I heard this song. Brings back so many memories of High School & College. Was always one of the favorites.

  27. C.... Y....

When I moved to San Francisco, I was desperately looking for a new life, somehow wrapped in the sensibility of the Summer of Love. But I was too late, born too late. That kind of warmth, of love and human compassion once so worn openly on the sleeve without apology by the citizens of that city was long gone. The year was 2000, and a very dark era that we have never left was just around the corner...

    C.... Y....

Cesar Yabor beautifully said, thank you. I also was born too late, and long for a time that will never be again

  30. C.... Y....

"Amid the search for higher consciousness during the flower power era, the song 'galvanised a congregation of disaffected youth dismissive of traditional religion but anxious to achieve spiritual salvation'"

    Truer words...

    C.... Y....

    >disaffected youth

That seems to always be lingo for the elite to shit on us with.

    C.... Y....

@KentuckyHustler and these days they like to tag on an "s" at the end of "youth" just to marginalize even more.

  31. K.... ....

    We vibin'

  32. C.... Y....

Whenever I hear this song come on, especially in a public place, Time. Just. Stops.

I have never failed witnessing people look up in wonderment, captured by something pulling at their soul.

Straight up, it reduces me to tears.

  33. J.... W....

Really don’t understand this song but I like it

    J.... W....

It's about tripping hard af lmao

    J.... W....

Like all art, it doesn't matter one ounce of a flying fuck what the artist made of it, just what you make of it. So if you like something, that's all the understanding you need :D

  34. M.... G....

Any doubts as to what may have inspired the writing of this song evaporate after viewing the 'official' video. Good trip fellas?

le piano est pas présent dans cet enregistrement !ou très peu ...ce que tu perçoit c'est le son de l'orgue Hammond de M. Fisher....

    R.... ....

It's not piano actually ,it's organ

    R.... ....

Piano......piano....well....there is a piano in the song, just very soft. The main part is a hammond organ

    R.... ....

The pianist/lead singer is Gary Brooker. The organist is Matthew Fisher. They cowrote the music. Amazing keyboard work here for sure.

Hello Jeannie. This is for you!!  Hope you are well!      Awesome song!  I wish I could convey to you all, the meaning this song. 30 March  – 27 July 1967. I was dating and deeply in love with a beautiful young woman (18), from Eden, NY. I was also 18 and from Holland, NY.   After enlisting, I was destined for Marine Corps Recruit Depot, (MCRD), Parris Island, SC.       Using my “time tunnel”, I can relive those days. I will never, ever forget how happy and sad I felt!!  Sad, because I knew, deep inside, that I would be going off to Viet Nam. Sad because I knew we would have to say goodbye.
God only knows how much I truly loved her. This song takes me back to a totally different time in my life. It is inspirational and supportive. No, sadly this story did not end well. I did leave for Viet Nam. Gone for 16 months. Combat for 15 months, in country. Changed me forever. I am, for the most part, okay.  Yes, this and so many other songs of the summer of 1967 help.
This is one of those songs, in particular.  As if this and other songs, were written for me. I was and still am, at 71, a hopeless, hapless romantic…and a warrior! Purple Heart and all.

I just read somewhere that John Lennon loved this song, and that he was listening to it over and over on a cassette player in the backseat of a car, and when he got to wherever he was going, he asked the driver to wait until the song finished. What a timeless song.

    V.... L....

Do you know where you read it? I would like to read it as well.

    V.... L....

@George A. I'm still trying to find the source again, but here is a mention about how Lennon loved to drop acid and listen. https://www.procolharum.com/lennon.htm

  70. J.... J....

JJ
