This song seems to be a meditation triggered by watching pasta simmering, and getting lost in a trance. It is a longing for a heartfelt connection: to a lost love, to lost family, to a lost sense of freedom. The song "Freedom" , by Richie Havens, is central to understanding the lyrics. Richie Havens improvised the song on the Woodstock stage when the opening act to that 1969 festival was late. In it, Havens repeats the word freedom, then ties it to a loss of self and family, and also using the classic phrase "motherless child" from the ancient gospel song of kids being separated from their parents by the slave system, but he brings it back together by saying "the phone from my bosom" can reconnect him to what is missing and connects him: god and family. Prince's referencing Havens and that performance on the Woodstock stage, along with listening to Havens record with the lover he misses, give the impression that Prince is recognizing that a true sense of freedom includes the ability to ignore one's deepest fears/inhibitions and to act in the moment, not "waiting, waiting, waiting" or wondering "what you had for lunch today". He is so detached from himself in his depression that he almost forgets it is his birthday, and that "famous person" is his own lonely self. It appears Prince is beginning to realize, as the pasta is boiling, that freedom would be acting without self imposed fears of "being a martyr" , and other depressing inhibitions like lifestyle choices (seclusion in a cold place-he says "starving" there) and religion (the JW edicts against celebrating one's birthday and stating there is no time). The full moon reiterates this awakening, as the full moon is connected to heightened awareness of emotions, and it is also a measurement of time, not mankind's, but nature's. Lost in thought, Prince's pasta water boils out, and his food burns. End of meditation. One wonders if the wasted meal isn't symbolic of losing his opportunities in life to be truly loved, and to self nurture. Does this mean Prince feels burnt out? Does he want to reconnect with his past-or is he acknowledging a lifetime of missed opportunities outside of his reputation as a workaholic musician? The beat and tone of the song are both solemn and bleak. Was Prince feeling he'd hit rock bottom and needed to put energy into re-connecting with his past in order to move forward as a complete being? Many friends have stated he called them out of the blue in the months before his death, so he was reconnecting. Makes you wonder what would have happened to him personally and creatively had he not died. Anyway, just my thoughts.

This song is beautiful and sad at the same time. Price was in deep depression for a long time which is one of the effect of opioid addiction. He loved pasta with orange juice. The pasta simmers on the stove because it's already been cooked and he could not eat enjoy it due to loneliness. No one around to eat with him then left the cooked pasta on the stove to simmer and started burning. He never celebrated birthdays but loved people around him on his birthday but on this particular day no one was around. What he also was trying to say I think is how can you be some every body wanted and be someone s husband but did not want us to know he was talking about himself. No one to talk to, no one to ask him even what he ate for lunch because he had not eaten. It was his birthday and all he saw was full moon and you know people are more depressed and crazy with full moon energy. Lonely. He needed help with his depression but never got it and the addiction made things worse. Rest in peace my love. You don't need any earthly company nor pasta no more. Your loneliness is gone as you enjoy God's everlasting love and His warm embrace the day you saw His face. We shall all meet again. Miss you my love.

I can't get this out of my head... I agree, "Dreamy" and then add to that "vast", "endless space and time". Some people are suggesting this song is Prince seeing his life coming to an end soon... Geytkeypur, I got the same impression and interpretation of the song as you! Part of me thinks also the Richie Haven's reference and Woodstock could be some kind of message about breaking from the Jehovah's witness? Richie Haven's defining moment at Woodstock was his performance of "Freedom." Jehovah's Witness is restrictive and one can't celebrate birthdays. If one does these things.....then they are labeled an "apostate." Read up on Jehovah's Witness and "apostate." They really make one feel like dirt! This song has a reflective dreary vibe. I can't help but wonder if this song is somewhat a cry for help or Love. We sure didn't hear too much from Larry Graham in these latter years? Can't help but wonder if it were Jehovah Witness or Record companies that had something to do with Prince's death? Why pasta?
