Pretenders, The - Talk Of The Town Lyrics
Such a drag to want something sometime
One thing leads to another I know
Was a time wanted you for mine
Nobody knew
You arrived like a day
I made a wish, I said it out loud
Out loud in a crowd
Everybody heard
'twas the talk of the town
It's not my place to know what you feel
I'd like to know but why should i?
Who were you then, who are you now?
Common labourer by night, by day highbrow
Back in my room I wonder, then i
Up in the sky
Clouds rearrange
Like the talk of the town
Maybe tomorrow, maybe someday
Maybe tomorrow, maybe someday
You've changed your place in this world
You've changed your place in this world
Oh but it's hard to live by the rules
I never could and still never do
The rules and such never bothered you
You call the shots and they follow
I watch you still from a distance then go
Back to my room, you never know
I want you, I want you but now
Who's the talk of the town?

Pretenders, The Talk Of The Town Comments
oh my goodness
This is a beautiful song.
Amazing.
A song that hits the ground running ... back when Triumph Bonnevilles were still in the Shops I liked to listen and even got to see the Pretenders live ... now I realise that was a seed sown for later when I could apprechiate just how nice it is sitting under a 40ft Tree listening again, few Bands made it this far with me or grew so beautifully, Quercus Pretenderous.
Incredibly sophisticated song - it's like a little opera.
Honeyman was adorable!So sad!
These first two Pretenders records were an absolute delight.
Videos from this era look more modern than what they make now.
That voice!
🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🙏🏻🥂✝️♓️♊️☯️👍
how can anyone voted down on this? wtf
💂🎼🎸🎤👍👍👍👍🎤🎸🎼💂
Just Beautiful.
Chrissie Hinde's voice is pure seduction.
Smokin' hot.
fell in love with this song first time i heard it on the radio.
i cant find the pretenders song i heard on sirous radio.. it was awesome from the old stuff
First Wave plays several of their lesser-known songs. I've heard them play Precious, Mystery Achievement, The Wait, and Time the Avenger.
What a great song!
Superb!! Loved this band since day one.
Her looks are boring.
This stage set is so good.
Radio friendly without compromising their street credibility one iota. Not an easy thing to do. Chops for days & looks that kill. The total package.
I love you you Pretender
Fucking want her. She felt the same way when she saw Jagger.
BEST SONG EVER
Interesting....no Telecaster!?
Chrissie Hynde, Aimee Mann, Cindy Wilson.............Thank You 1980s!
punk rock blues and a girl like elvis!
Garbage used the line Talk of town in the song "Special" as a tribute to them
Chrissy looked sooo good back then! She had the best voice, too!!! Awesome video!! Thank you for sharing!!
I knew this because of garbage and the song “special”
Chrissie's voice on this song...as caressing and sexy as anything. Queen of early MTV
IS IS IS IS IS !!!!!!!
So amazingly beautiful. I love you, Chrissie!
Great Song!
One of the groups that ushered in the 80s. Oh to be young and wealthy again.
Kat N. from Muddy Waters coffee shop in Uptown, Minneapolis used to sing this to me when we walked to the CC Club for last call after she finished shutting down the café avec moi, au revoir, then she'd open her mouth to sing but only bubbles of laughter.
I liked Rita too, but I crushed on Kat hard for a little lonesome spell so one time I signed our name on a NASA microchip to Alpha Centauri. So I guess we're together in that sense if sadly never reality.
I remain in love in 2019 <3
Still is!!!
A sound that will never be duplicated! Chrissie's voice, and James Guitar! Just WoW!!!
One of my favourite bands back in 79 -80 and nice guitar sound.
This broad has had chapped lips since the first album
Someone remix the & extend this Awesome Song.. PLEASE

YA Crissy and pretenders right up at the top of memorable rock artists one of the sexiest women in rock an an voice unforgettable

.
I have to say I've seen many music videos this is got to be in my top five as far as at least the backdrop scenery and everything else
In my opinion this is the best Pretenders track....ever..!!!!
The lyrics to this song is pure rock-poetic:
Such a drag to want something sometimes
One thing leads to another I know
Was a time wanted you for my own
Nobody knew
You arrived like a day
And passed like a cloud
I made a wish, I said it out loud
Out loud in a crowd
Everybody heard
'Twas the talk of the town
It's not my place to know what you feel
I'd like to know but why should I?
Who where you then? Who are you know?
Common laborer by night, By day highbrow
Back in my room I wonder then I
Sit on the bed, Look at the sky
Up in the sky
Clouds rearrange
Like the talk of the town
Maybe tomorrow, Maybe someday
Maybe tomorrow, Maybe someday
You've changed, Your place in this world
You've changed, Your place in this world
Oh but it's hard to live by the rules
I never could and still never do
The rules and such never bothered you
You call the shots and they follow
I watch you still from a distance then go
Back to my room you never know
I want you, I want you but now
Who's the talk of the town?
Maybe tomorrow, Maybe someday
Maybe tomorrow, Maybe someday
You've changed, Your place in this world
You've changed, Your place in this world
Rest in peace Pete Farndon and James Honeyman-Scott! Too young to die.
This will always be my favorite Pretenders song.
Beginning of a different type of music,it worked very well.
2019???
I’m so in love.
Inspired by Moby Grape song called Someday.
I don't remember the video ending like that, with a close-up of her face. I thought it ended with a close-up of the guitar again.
love this song and clip think it was off kenny everett video show saw much cool music on that show.
Love the Pretenders! Although, I’d love to remix this song, crank up the guitars and maybe add a dirty guitar throughout the tune.
RIP James Honeyman-Scott and Peter Farndon both of whom died much too young with their entire lives and careers ahead of them.
I always used to fantasize about coming home from A Hard Day's Work, Chrissie Hynde would come out of the kitchen with my dinner newspaper slippers and a pipe. I would then say to her come over here Chrissy and give me a big kiss. She said okay. Then she would lean and towards me, I would then have my mouth open and my tongue out ready for that intimacy of lust....... then the alarm clock would go off and I will wake up
FUCKING awesome.....2019 !
Chris Thomas produced "Birthday" and "Happiness Is A Warm Gun" and played keyboards on four Beatles songs: Mellotron on "The Continuing Story of Bungalow Bill", piano on "Long, Long, Long" and "Savoy Truffle", and harpsichord on "Piggies".
As a college freshman at Cornell back in 1981 there was a poster placed in the student union advertising an October concert by the Pretenders on the Cornell campus. Everyday as I went to breakfast I would look at the poster and was taken by the female lead singer from Ohio. At the concert you learned that her beauty was surpassed only by her angelic voice. This song, that poster, and that voice changed my life! Thank you Akron for giving us all Chrissie Hynde, the pride of the "Rubber City" and God's gift to music lovers everywhere!
There was a time when me and my lady..........we were the talk of the town. You know what? I don't give a damn,,,
BAD veggie girl xxx
Too good
Their best song
I miss this band. Music sucks now.
Classic
Still fantastic! Always loved it and always will. Still have the original 45 in its original sleeve in the loft somewhere. Chrissie was just awesome!
Check out Crissy doing some Annie Lennox tracks, not many girls can do Annie...
Not pretending.
Chrissie was never more beautiful. RIP Pete and James.
una de las mejores canciones de la decada. In my top 10
By far their best song.
Is the Pretenders in the RoCk hall of Fame??? They should be.
Perfect in every possible way
Oh Chrissy,,,, so many great teen memories to your music
Someone send me back to 1980, please
Audio quality is awful.
The mix separation on this tune is magical. Chris Thomas is the best. 👍🇬🇧🇺🇸🎸 Thomas produced "Birthday" and "Happiness Is A Warm Gun".
Chrissie Hynde, Ann Wilson, Gwen Stefani......great women rock singers. Stefani should’ve never left the No Doubt band
Very Special Song To Me..
DID THESE FOUR COMPLIMENT EACH OTHER SO MUCH AS A GROUP OR WHAT !
My two earliest singles that I remember I bought were, firstly, Heart of Glass Blondie, and then Talk of the Town, The Pretenders. I couldn't be prouder to have that taste in music at 12 to 14 years old
I had a massive crush on Chrissie, still have, and this song sealed the deal. The visuals on this are insane too. What a lady, and what a band.
Gosh that smoky deep voice of hers, carrying so much more "weight" than today's empty headed, prepubescent sounding, Minnie-Mouse-on-helium mannequins.
They were just pretending.
Here is your prototypical 80s vid. Man I sure miss this kind of presentation.
How to be a sexy woman:Chrissye Hynde!
she was so fucking hot ❤
She was so cute then with such a crisp and 'trembling' voice
This song always makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand on end in a warm and sentimental way. Her voice is like this soothing hush and James' guitar work here is pure finesse and feel.
Personally, no other lady wore panda eye-liner and looked great, thx Chrissie. I was roughly 17-18 and discovered THE PRETENDERS
dusty springfield
@Break'er Bikes Dusty was a cuty, but a little before my time.
