Pretenders, The - Birds Of Paradise Lyrics

I wrote a letter to you my friend
So many letters that I never send
I think about you at the day's end
The time that we had
I laughed in my bed
The stupid things you said
We were two birds of paradise

When I was a little girl
With clay horses and lambs on the shelf
I caught frogs in ditches, listened for elves
My friends and I had a world unto ourselves
No grownups could find us when we
Made our plans so secretly
To run away and fly to be
With the two birds of paradise

Now once upon a time my mind still there wanders
Back in the room the things I remember
One time when we took off our clothes
But you were cryin', cryin'
You said nothing lasts forever
We were happy together
I thought about you in stockholm and rome
Me in my hotel room
You in your home
This is the life they say that
Dreams are made of
Don't forget
Please do forgive me
I still have something you did give me
Come into my dream with me and dream

Please don't forget
Do forgive me
I still have something you did give me
Come into my dream with me and dream
Oh dream of paradise

  1. b.... ....

    That early band was perfect!

  2. W.... W....

    Dedicated to my commadre, Vanessa.

This is the song that cemented my love for Chrissie and her band. She won me over when I heard this for the first time. I hear so many elements of musical genres here. Motown. Rock and Roll. Heavy British Rock also. Chrissie I love you so much!

Oh...yeah. Imho, there were lots of great female singers, songwriters and composers of good music. Only other woman, women alive n still kicking it today ...out of those ladies from the 70s, 80s...are Anne and Nancy Wilson from Heart. My other fave, again imho, was Donna Summer. Nowadays, yeah...Gaga, Adele, Janet...not too into the newer stuff though. Most of the the ahem, younger women singing are mere puppets on screech and couldnt do it without autotune and all of that other...stuff. also props to Amy Winehouse...what she could have been, had she beat her demons. Sad. Take Care. And can you believe that the Stones are gonna tour again!?!? Saw them in 1994. Damn.😊🤗🕊

  4. G.... B....

one of the very best LP ever, crystal guitar, vibrating voice, and the rest ... that time the pretenders did not play for joke

  5. p.... r....

    My absolute favourite Pretenders track!

  6. g.... ....

Like when it comes out of the solo..."And please dont forget...do forgive me"

    g.... ....

That verse always, messed me up

    g.... ....

Truth In relationships of love....its a universal theme. Saw the original 4 twice in 80 n 81. This is music. That will last for the Ages. Rock On and God Bless.

  7. D.... D....

On heavy rotation when this came out. I was 15

  8. d.... 5....

Beautiful. Memories, some of working poor, but the Pretenders always cheered me up.

  9. T.... K....

I bought Pretenders 2 around Christmas '81. this song reminds me how my own personal life is screwed up and melancholy!

  10. l.... w....

    my youth

    l.... w....

    leena walveranta mine too.

  11. T.... ....

Always brings tears to my eyes. I don't know how she could sing this live - almost like standing there naked.

  12. L.... W....

look at chambers white jeans,,lol,,,proper 80s like

    L.... W....

    Leighton Watkins yummy.

  13. D.... B....

    Still get chills from this

  14. M.... ....

James H. Scott was so talented he was able to say with few notes what others couldn't. His solo is a fine example of elegance.

    M.... ....

They all were, Pete was a killer bass player too. And we know Martin can play pretty much anything!

  15. T.... M....

no one can pull at the strings of your heart quite like the Pretenders only Chrissie Hundred can so effortlessly sum up and contain the longings of love and regret.

  16. R.... S....

Chrissie Hynde is my favorite female rock singer lately, though she's always been in my top two.(lol)
    She really is!
And, it's with these ballads that I find her to be most heartfelt.
(Instead of hurtful, on flat-out rockers...like "Middle of the Road" or "Perfect".
She's on a national tour THIS year in America, (2016), and she and the Mighty Pretenders, are as great as they were 30 years back!
    Possibly GREATER!
This song is one their best. Among many!
