somehow i feel as though, if ptm are finally recognized as one of the greatest bands of all time, the critics will point to this album over their newer stuff. it's not my favorite of their music, but the intricacy of this album is groundbreaking. Even more important, it remains true to the sincerity and beauty that ptm puts into their more mainstream stuff. it's mysterious and haunting. a true masterpiece

man every song by them is so fucking cool. my friend and I both agree they are one of the greatest bands of all time.

Thanks for putting all this together! The lyrics of this piece are nearly impossible to discern due to all the distortions and intentionally blowing out the mic. This is by far the closest I've seen anyone get with the lyrics. Some of it still sounds a little off to me, particularly "Some children come/And found our secret lair; your move." Those are definitely the correct lyrics for the most part, but I think there might be a variant of that thrown in there. You're absolutely right though: no matter what the lyrics are, this is a fucking masterpiece.

What ep is this the beginning to?

It's the beginning of the "It's Complicated Being a Wizard" EP. This song lasts 23 minutes, then the EP plays the song again broken up into different tracks. The band thought it'd be cool for people who liked certain parts in the song to be able to play that part without having to listen to the whole song.

Why did this album get removed from Spotify?!

This was an ep they made ahead of a record label deal so it requires a lot of hoops to jump through. It'll require even more now since Woodstock released because the label probably requested all the previously released albums too. I hope they said fuck off but if they didnt we'll probably see releases that take John's album art off to sell it mainstream

Francis Beaulieu Taylor had nothing to do with that it's all licensing with the record label that accomplished that atrocity

Why all the comments about tripping/being high? I smoke and I've done my share of shrooms and acid. Yeah, it's cool "under the influence", but it's fucking amazing, regardless of whatever mind-altering substances one may be on. It's just what you get when you have awesomely talented, epic, emotional, moody songwriting.

Not complaining about the drug use. Like I said, I partake, and I get it. But it's not necessary to thoroughly enjoy this.

I was doing shrooms last night while preparing for my geography exam and stumbled over this band.
Even tho Im totally normal now, im still listening to it.
I think most people just love to listen to this kind of music when they're perception is altered, since the song really goes well, with a smoothly twisted world.
Also, for some reason, you get the feeling you're more connected to the music under the influence of certain drugs, which also makes the listening experience a bit more intense.
Nevertheless, I totally agree with you, whether you're tripping/high or sober, this track is great :)

Some things can be studied well on shrooms, for example quantum theory in physics.
But once you try do maths on shrooms, the whole world literally breaks apart for you.
I tried to prepare for a maths test on psilocybin (in that test i had 100%) and i couldn't do anything.
The world binding function just doesn't work properly for you anymore.

Love it.  For an alternative try "When Wichita Falls So Falls Wichita" by Pat Metheny and Lyle Mayes (1980).  Metheny has a number of Grammy Hall of Fame records (check wiki).  I takes awhile to get use to it but like "Complicated" well worth it.

Bruhh MIchael Jordan? haha. The song is a reference to occult Magick. some members of Portugal the Man are self proclaimed satanists. It's complicated being a wizard because it takes years of research, study and experiments to decipher all that Crowley and other Occultists prophets taught. 23 is an enigma as it shows up more than any other number throughout our lives. I'm not all that well versed in occultism but that's how I come up with it. Wizard is someone who performs magic(k) every song on the album is accompanied with the word magic. and the album is 23 minutes long. search 23 enigma for more info. it could be MJ as he was a wizard on the court with magical performances and he was also 23.

John said in his Reddit AMA that it was originally a 6 minute song before one of his producers (Casey something or other) and bitched at him, saying that 6 minutes was way too long to be a song. So he extended it and made it 23 minutes long (yes, a reference to MJ) to fuck with Casey
