Police, The - Darkness Lyrics

I can dream up schemes when I'm sitting in my seat
I don't see any flaws till I get to my feet
I wish I never woke up this morning
Life was easy when it was boring

I could make a mark if it weren't so dark
I could be replaced by any bright spark
But darkness makes me fumble
For a key
To a door
That's wide open

Instead of worrying about my clothes
I could be someone that nobody knows
I wish I never woke up this morning
Life was easy when it was boring

I can dream up schemes when I'm sitting in my seat
I don't see any flaws till I get to my feet
I wish I never woke up this morning
Life was easy when it was boring

It is already blatant. I hear a song and immediately recognize the voice of Sting. I think that went to everyone who saw the series Mindhunters. All the greater then the surprise that it is even from Police. Super cool song. Anyway a great selection of music in this series.

    M.... D....

Maybe listening to lots of other bands and maybe some of us got into Stings solo stuff more than the Police.

  31. G.... W....

"Darkness makes me fumble for a key to a door that's wide open"- one of my favorite lyrics of all time.

God dang! This song really defines the band. One of there best songs

  41. N.... M....

Thank you Mindhunter for bringing back my favorite Police gem after so many years. Haunting and beautiful. It's also good to see this brilliant show introduce younger generations to older music.

  42. c.... ....

Odd that this gem is not on any of the numerous Best of the Police type albums that have been churned out over the last 40 years. This is clearly one of their best songs.

  43. P.... H....

Tuh, y’all know why I’m here

  44. M.... F....

All the travel takes it out of you.

  45. J.... 2....

    r.... ....

romeo9545 pretty sure you have hit the right era. Make the best out of the moment.

    r.... ....

@Donkeydongle There is a lot of good new music around but the loudness war is still raging and sound quality today is often shite compared to what we had back in the 80's.

  47. D.... F....

That small look in Holden's eyes, like he knows he's gonna catch him.

  48. J.... E....

Thanks mindhunter for showing me this hidden gem. I think it's one of their greatest songs.

    J.... E....

JC E Try the whole LP

    J.... E....

That's what gets frustrating by these videos comment sections when it's inundated with "here from x show". Obviously people like that song, why not check out the rest of what the band offers. Maybe some do but not likely

  49. D.... C....

Mindhunter everybody, what a fucking amazing series... The best on Netflix!

    D.... C....

    Completely agree !

    D.... C....

    Don Carlo 💪🏾💪🏾💯💯💯

    D.... C....

    @Phyllisha Hart 100%genius series

    D.... C....

    D.... ....

@Keith Barrett Stings singing but Stewart Copeland wrote it.

    D.... ....

@Chris Cross Ok great thanks for the info, but when I heard Sting's voice I knew it was him.

  52. d.... ....

I've been discovering recently that my favorite songs by The Police were mainly written by Stewart Copeland. His technique, flair, and personality made for a very unique contribution to the band.

  53. M.... G....

  55. T.... G....

wow this is great. I'm a police fan but never heard this album before. I wish they'd done more stuff like this.

  56. M.... ....

It was one hot summer when I forgot the Ghost in the machine CD in my car. It got so hot that the plastic tray in the CD case melted and the actual CD got bent to a degree you couldn't use it anymore.
So I went to a 2nd hand record store to buy another copy. Took it home and played it, to find that it got stuck at one point - big scratch on the back. Brought it straight back to the record store and showed it to the guy behind the counter, who then started to treat and polish the back of the CD for at least 5 minutes. Then he asked me which track had got stuck in my stereo. I told him "number 11, the last one", he put it in and made us both test listen back to it over all the speakers in the store. I think it was the first and only time that "Darkness" was being played there like that. And I really enjoyed it!

    M.... ....

Why the hell I read that

concerning british intelligence: hitlers bunker maybe used by extraterrestrials for headquarters for the war called armaggedeon [attack earth]. let he who has wisdom count the number of the "beast"=komod dragon[lizard=ancient devil ] for it is 3 score and 6. 6x6x6=18yrs time frame for united states "war preperation". the attack will commence in the winter months on north american continient, when we would be most vulnerable. 59. T.... S....

One of my favorite songs since i heard it the first time - being 15 years old 1981 - with my walkman walking through my little hometown. i forgot all around me.

  60. j.... e....

  68. C.... P....

    Wunderbar

  69. J.... O....

    Best police song by far

  70. G.... H....

I listen to this in 90 i was a poor highschooler life was easy and Boring now, i work in great compagnies since 20 years and i regret those days when life was easy when it was Boring. i am ghost in the capitalisme machine! I got To much information from my smart form am no Alpha man but an oméga one. Days rainy , the sun invisible, and every thing my lady does seems To me magic

  71. l.... s....

I dont' think Ste and Sting were equals, if I consider them as composers. Ste is a great force, who never stops, with vitality and curiosity; but Gordon, at that time, even if today is artistically exhausted, was a pure genius. So I understand the friction between the two, and I understand better the point of view of Sting, who wanted his work at certain standards and who wanted the control over Police but... but he was a really asshole not wanting to sing this song live. This song is beautiful and mesmerizing.

  72. J.... J....

  73. G.... D....

Basso e batteria con amore e passione.Io li amo

  74. p.... ....

Gizmodrome made a great live version with Mark King (Level 42) on vocals.

  75. w.... t....

one of those great forgotten tracks

  76. B.... ....

I always thought there was something really tragic, and melancholy about this song - especially poingnant to my mind considering it was the last album on the track. To me - this song is not about the peeves and trials of being famous and all over the world; but suffering from depression - fumbling uselessly for a key to a door that's wide open because of the tentacles of darkness and anxiety are twisting your mind and making you lose control and spiral into self-doubt and despair...

  77. j.... a....

    Música sin drogas.

  78. R.... M....

Pleasantly surprised, a deep cut of such quality from a band whose B-sides include non-classics like "Mother," "Friends," "Peanuts," "Dead End Job," "Masoko Tango" and "A Sermon."

    R.... M....

    But Masoko Tanga is awesome!

  79. T.... S....

O simply love this song! SC at his best level!!!

  80. G.... G....

Es lo que tienen las canciones que se encuentran al final del álbum, pasan desapercibidas cuando son obras maestras, como ‘The Sun and the Rainfall’ de Depeche Mode

  81. E.... B....

    ...........1981.......... one UNFORGETTABLE YEAR...........!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  82. t.... ....

This (GITM) was the first album I ever bought. I was 10. Still love it.

  83. L.... T....

Listened to The Police since I was about 8 Can't tell you what they meant to me.... Life changing

  84. S.... ....

Had this album on cassette tape.

    S.... ....

I did to and was played lots while travelling around Europe in a Combi in 1981 the year of release.whenever I hear anything off this it reminds me of that big trip.

  85. S.... ....

If they didn't break up and stayed together like U2 did... imagine how many great albums they would have had.

    S.... ....

    @Shinethelight - I became a U2 fan after The Police had broken up ;-)

  86. r.... g....

just as relevant today as it was 37 years ago, fame ,fortune..it's all irrelevant & written by Stewart copeland...best police song by a country mile & then some..so called singers of today listen to the lyrics & remember them after your 5 minutes of fame

  87. L.... T....

  89. N.... N....

This is a MIRACLE. I'm simply in love with this song, can't get enough of it.

  90. I.... a....

If only they didn't break up so soon ....

  91. A.... L....

I can say that is my top favorite song from The police. Love the vibe of this tune.

  92. r.... g....

If not mistaken stewart Copeland wrote this...best police song ever!..as relevant then as it is now, pure genius, the lyrics are just off the scale.pure perfection

  93. J.... C....

If you love this song it's because it in BOSSA NOVA OF THE 60s meaning NEW BEAT OR SHOULD I SAY,NEW WAVE for the 80s.
If you listen to must of police song it has those elements just like some of the BEATLES SONGS.bossa nova its another form of JAZZ

  94. R.... J....

    Best song on the album.

  95. H.... T....

Such a scintillating, and yet often forgotten about, Police song. This song is proof that Stewart Copeland was actually a good songwriter when he was given the chance.
