Pogues, The - Jesse James Lyrics

Jesse James we understand
Has killed many a man
He robbed the Union trains
He stole from the rich and gave to the poor
He had a hand and a heart and a brain

Well it was on a Saturday night
The stars were shining bright
They robbed the Glendale train
And the people they did say from many miles away
It was those outlaws Frank and Jesse James

Now Jesse had a wife
Lived a lady all her life
Her children they were brave
But history does record
That Bob and Charlie Ford
Have laid poor Jesse in his grave

Well it was Bob and Charlie Ford
Those dirty little cowards
I wonder how they feel
For they ate of Jesse's bread
And they slept in Jesse's bed
And they laid poor Jesse in his grave

Well the people held their breath
When they heard of Jesse's death
They wondered how he came to fall
Well it was Robert Ford in fact
Who shot him in the back
While he hung a picture on the wall

Pogues, The Jesse James Comments
  1. A.... J....

Proud to call Jessie James blood family, found put when I was 10 by my great grandpa, even have a aluminum picture of him.

  2. j.... s....

Robert Ford is the worst kind of person

  3. A.... T....

This starts off as an Irish song and ends up as a country song and pretty much sounds the same.

  4. D.... C....

Is this Shane magowan singing this? If so, his singing ability is even better than I thought it was. Unreal vocals

  5. J.... H....

    Break out the Winchesters!

  6. -.... J....

Thanks to Red Dead Redemption 2 to have brought me here!

    -.... J....

    Are you serious?

    -.... J....

Sì, perché? Purtroppo non conoscevo questa bellissima canzone

    -.... J....

+-Andrea- Jaylσкε non ci posso credere che questa canzone faccia parte della soundtrack di RDR2

  7. B.... D....

Did Shane sing this one? Doesn't sound drunk enough.

  8. M.... M....

Jesse would have loved this. Probably looking up as grinning like a possum.

    M.... M....

    Jessie James is no more.

  9. s.... c....

  10. D.... S....

God bless Jesse. Rebel yell! Damn yankees still plunderin and killen for oil now not cotton. Hero BUT COLE YOUNGER ten times the man Jesse was & Bloody Bill Anderson was one he did apprenticeship with in Bloody Kansas. History told by the victors dont always make it true. Tyrants hang heroes and write the opposite-Pat Cleburne.

  11. f.... k....

I vaguely remember this Jesse James was given a place to hide by a lady who's property taxes where due so he gave her the money then waited for the tax collector to leave and promptly robbed him he got his money back she paid her taxes lol

    f.... k....

She made dinner for the james gang while they were eating Jesse noticed that she was upset and asked what was wrong. She told him that today was the day she would be evicted from her farm as she couldn’t keep up the repayments so Jesse gave her the money to clear the loan and when the bank manager signed it off the hang were waiting for him down the road.

  12. R.... C....

    Great Song!

  13. B.... ....

Yeah this is Woody Guthrie's Jesus Christ with a little bit of post-modern punk energy. Well done lads, nicely sung.

  16. x.... ....

Spider has always been my favorite pogue

  17. B.... D....

It doesn't matter what Jesse James was truly like - we will never know. But the power of his myth makes him a legend in the true sense of the word - which is why Woodie Guthrie, Pete Seeger, Bruce Springstein, Bob Dylan and many others including the Pogues sing of him. We create myths because we need them to inspire and energise us in our mundane daily lives. When we live in a rational society where we as social individuals are in control of our lives instead of cowering before impersonal and mysterious economic and political forces we don't understand, that is when we will also be able to live sane lives without mythically projecting parts of our own selves and environment.

    B.... D....

    Well said !!!

    B.... D....

well said also by me! a Mith is firstly a symbol, with popular talks novel, poetry, pictures comics cinema, and all kind of representation on him. and every one is interpretation, following the needs of that era of history. that's the only way and why they survived history from his ancient beginnings from when a lot of things disappeared or were forgotten or out of use.

    @Kieran Ohara

I know how you feel. Sometimes I think there should be some sort of lock on the keyboard like there is on car ignitions of those charged with DUI .

    r.... i....

Ah, communists can't be folk singers. Thank you for informing me. I didn't know that.

  19. s.... ....

He "fucked the union in the ass?"

    Get therapy.

  20. G.... T....

No Jesse was a great man a genius and a hero to many. You Yankees just hate him cuz he fucked the union in the ass and faked his death with help from the governor of Missouri

    G.... T....

It's possible he's hated because he killed almost 30 people.

    G.... T....

Gary Thomson there are so many photos of Jesse and each one clearly shows different men. The photo of him dead for example, he has more hair than when he was 10 years younger and clearly a different man. No plastic surgery or hair transplants back on those days.

  21. i.... ....

Very similar to Jesus Christ by Woody Guthrie

  22. C.... ....

    He is a great idol
by me and my father and my uncle.

  33. f.... ....

@BahaBib I think Spider sings this. The fife parts dont play at the same time as the vocals and if you watch their one video of spider singing the song "turkish song of the damed" I at least noticed the vocals in that sounded very similar to that. Can't really confirm it though...

  34. d.... p....

  43. S.... ....

Oh not at all. I really liked his rendition.

  44. S.... ....

The only thing that would've made The Assassination of Jesse James a better film is if it ended with this cover of the song. Love it.
