Plum, Thelma - Better In Blak Lyrics

Do you know what it feels like
To get calls in the middle of the night
Saying, "You are not worth it
You deserve it
Go on, have another drink"?

Do you know what it feels like
To get stuck in the middle of a fight
Screaming, "You are not worth it
You deserve it
Go on, have another drink"?

But if I just keep quiet
I'll be the one who's lying too
Why should I keep hiding
Always crying
Tell me, what did I do?

You took the color from me
Darling, I'll get it back
You took the color from me
But I look better in black
If I knew what I know now
Maybe I would take it back
But fuck that
I look better in black

Do you know what it feels like
To be told that you are never right?
If I had lighter skin, maybe I would win
Does it make you wanna think?

Do you know what it feels like
'Cause I know what it feels like
If I had lighter skin, maybe I would win
Does it make you wanna think?

But if I just keep quiet
I'll be the one who's lying too
Why should I keep hiding
Always crying
Tell me, what did I do?

You took the color from me
Darling, I'll get it back
You took the color from me
But I look better in black
If I knew what I know now
Maybe I would take it back
But fuck that
I look better in black

Hey
I look better in black
Hey
I look better in black
If I knew what I know now
Maybe I would take it back
But fuck that (Fuck that!)
I look better in black

I'm very glad to see indigenous people having their voice heard in general and especially through means like this that can really help with pure exposure, if enough people are willing to engage with her message that is which sadly many Australians still are not, but it can only help.

Why do they call it RE-conciliation when relations were never good in the first place? (Not to disrespect movements that have done good for the indigenous people but the wording is not accurate to the history by the normal definition)

When will we offer an 'apology' that actually warrants some bonding and strengthening of ties and relations (aka, actual action, actual polices, an actual movement, the chance for indigenous people to forge their own path forwards with agency).

When will we acknowledge that the department of child services is the modernized rebranding of the stolen generations (less explicit sure, but we all know proportionally indigenous families suffer far more than other groups in these regards).

WHAT THE FUCK ARE YOU COMPLAINING ABOUT?
YOU ABO'S HAVE ALL THE PRIVILEGES IN THE WORLD LIKE JOBS JUST FOR YOU AND NO ONE ELSE, DOLL FOR JUST ROCKING UP AT SCHOOL, SPECIAL PROGRAMS FOR INDIGENOUS YOUTH AND IT GOES ON AND ON AND ALL YOU DO IS WHINE AND COMPLAIN.
THE SAME CULTURE WHERE WOMEN AND CHILDREN ARE 20 TO 50 TIMES MORE LIKELY TO BE BEATEN AND ABUSED AND WHERE ALCOHOL ADDICTION RUNS RAMPANT DUE TO NO CULTURAL LEADERSHIP.
FUCK YOU AND FIX YOUR OWN SHITTY PEOPLE!

    j.... ....

@Austin Hamilton look how you're attitude and approach (which is a mirror image of the media and government) has helped them in recent decades.... they have gone down the shitter. I'm not seeing anything I've said being incorrect it's just that you have a way of fixing it in a different way. And ofcourse I don't feel sorry for people that abuse their weak and on an antidotal level cop racist abuse from them myself on a regular. Intellectual knowledge of these people I'd not enough to understand this problem

    j.... ....

jim actually, there is a lot of positives that’s come out of supporting Aboriginal incentives and empowerment. Despite the education deficit, more Aboriginals are now enrolling and graduating through school than ever before. Healthcare funding has lacked but the Social Justice Report shows increased funding in key areas such as Aboriginal Health Services has shown to improve quality of care and satisfaction for Aboriginals. More aboriginals are enrolling in tertiary studies than ever before. You have come off a bit racist and backwards to me mate using derogatory terms such as “Abos” etc. if you truly hoped for the betterment of these people and thus overall for Australia (which I think you don’t), you would support these governmental interventions. Also I can’t speak on behalf of your anecdotal experiences but they do not represent the whole community. Also it’s a bit of labelling when you won’t care about a WHOLE race because of the actions of some. Remember, domestic violence and abuse is common among areas that are low on the socio economic index, and is very high among white Australians that live in these areas too. It’s a matter of social determinants (income, education, stress etc) and not a matter of race mate. It’s your attitude of not caring that will inevitably hurt them. These governmental interventions do work given they are provided adequate funding and are able to carry out these interventions to help these communities. Rather than not caring, we can turn these communities around and see Aboriginals in a more positive lens than just a negative lens because they are not all drugged up and drunk people. Many of them are actually elderly people believe it or not, that really need help and suffer greatly from a myriad of health issues that plague these communities. You would truly sympathise if you saw these people that do suffer and just need help.

    j.... ....

@Austin Hamilton good on you for keeping your cool in the face of @jim's negativity. Not sure I would have remained as level-headed in your place. Anywho, I was listening to an interview on the radio the other day featuring an Indigenous Australian leader who's been working hard to improve circumstances for his mob for a long time, and one thing he said that really stuck with me was words to the effect of "The Government needs to stop working ON us, and start working WITH us." Couldn't have said it better myself: the only way to solve the inequality faced by Indigenous Australians is to workshop solutions WITH them, not trying to come up with solutions in isolation ... 'cause that's like trying to do physics research without any physicists!

    j.... ....

  65. J.... A....

    Perfect song. Love Thelma.

  66. J.... S....

Love this and am eagerly awaiting more good music

  67. C.... d....

Instantly catchy... has a great 80's sound... Powerful lyrics and sculpted vocal melodies... Video way to bland when you compare it to the story told in the song... You could go a lot of different ways depending on how passionate you are about getting your message across... personally i'd change it especially going up against American pop culture... other that I love it and hope people hear your stories and understand your message.

    C.... d....

They may not have had the budget for that. I think it's good for how simple it is. The editing is fantastic.

    C.... d....

You're missing the point. It's not meant to be flashy.

    C.... d....

@King Flippy Nips I'm not missing point... The point of a song is to tell a story in a hope that others will listen... The point of the video is to attract the emotionally deaf with visualization of the story so they can hear

    C.... d....

@Craig davis Fuck up ya clown. The point of making songs is often defined by budget, capacity. Worked on $1000 budgets for songs and $100,000 budgets and $500,000 k and everywhere else in between. And guess what, they all differ in outcome looks wise because of input i.e. money

    C.... d....

Craig davis - I get what you’re saying but I think the story may be a more personal one than you realise. To me it kind of makes sense to be including family (direct and indirect) and those on ‘team Thelma’ as a show of force and defiance in the face of some horrible experiences. Also, as others have said, it could also come down to budget.
Unfortunately, this probably won’t grab broad general public attention your ideas might.

  71. D.... a....

Thank you Thelma I absolutely love this song and I love the meaning too. Be who you are and be proud of who you are.

    D.... a....

Judas Iscariot Hello, firstly pointing out inequalities that exist today and showing that skin colour may be an influencing factor in determining success is not racist at all and does not fall under its definition. As a person who has learnt about Aboriginals, statistics tend to agree that they actually tend to suffer in areas such as income, mental health, education, physical health, housing conditions, etc, which indicates Aboriginals must overcome these barriers that plague their communities, unlike White Australians. There are clear barriers to success, perpetuated through Australia’s dark history and treatment of Aboriginals. I think it’s sad you think this song is racist at all and you should open your mind to the hardships these people face.

    D.... a....

Wow I didn’t mean to sound like a racist, I was just saying I love this song. I didn’t read where I wrote the part about skin colour. If all you get out of this song is skin colour I do believe you have missed the point all together. This is clearly a very powerful song and it’s about herself too not just her skin.

    D.... a....

Judas Iscariot please don’t call me that, you know nothing about me or anything I have done. If I was racist I wouldn’t care that you called me racist. Thelma said on triple j what this song meant to her and she said herself it’s about being who you are. I’m proud of her and this song. She is a strong, proud aboriginal woman, what’s not to be proud of.

    D.... a....

@Daniel ayris hey you didnt sound racist at all, all you were doing is supporting her and telling her to be proud of who she is 😊
