Plant, Robert - Pledge Pin Lyrics

Watch them go 'cause one by one they rise to fall
Hearts in tow, it's just a game - she's only having fun
She laughs and turns away surprised
She mocks it all the same
Tonight's the loss tomorrow's gain and in the end it's so

Stand in line as one by one they march in time
In the wings I stand and watch these foolish things go by
Just preparing for the play aloof she moves
The confidante, with practiced step
The merry dance she executes her role

As the cavalcade begins to thin, do you stop and look around
Free to choose but not to win - you're just too late
Your show is at an end - now you're the victim of your game
Through your fingers watch them slip
Familiar rules just hit and miss for the one who never shows

  1. j.... a....

a manic song of male bragdoccio and panic!

  2. C.... M....

    Great tune!

  3. M.... ....

    What happened?

  4. U.... S....

A lot of folks don't know that Cozy Powell worked on writing the album with Robbie and Robert and did pre-production and writing the drum parts. He finished two final takes which made the LP. He couldn't finish it having gone off to other bands, I think Michael Schenker, and Phil Collins thought it couldn't be improved on very much so he recorded it pretty much as Cozy did. Cozy said that it was one of the nicest compliments he ever got that Phil recorded it the way he wrote them. If you go looking here on YouTube you will find the early rough demos from the studio of the songs in rough format.

  5. M.... K....

Another classic early 80s tune. I agree with the Police comparisons.

  6. J.... S....

Bem The Police, coisa linda, músicas que não voltam mais, ai que tristeza...

    This takes me back 🖤

  9. m.... k....

Massive, huge The Police influence here. But it was obvoius for early 80s.

  10. J.... J....

AWESOME ALBUM. WHAT A COME BACK FROM LED ZEPPELIN YEARS.

  11. R.... N....

Sounds as timeless now as it did then.

  12. b.... b....

dig some of his solo stuff

  13. J.... F....

One of my faves from this album!!

  14. D.... D....

does Sting get any royalties for this?

  15. j.... ....

he really should have opened the album with this track. absolutely stunning.

  16. W.... G....

Is there a sax cover on YouTube for this song?

  17. j.... H....

I had tickets to see Led Zep in Florida in 1980, but it was cancelled as you know but did catch this concert in 1982 Oakland one of the best!

    j.... H....

james Hammon you're lucky. I got to see him in 85 when i was 15

    j.... H....

Yeah, james...I too had tickets to see Zep in Buffalo on Aug. 6, 1977, but that show was also cancelled due to the death of Robert Plant's son.

  18. J.... M....

    A Hidden Jewel!

  19. R.... L....

    FCUKENAAAAAAHH!!! wOOp!! \m/

  20. A.... M....

This song will always remind me of summer camp, 1982. I played it on my brother's cassette tape player over and over, on the way to camp. Does anyone remember cassettes LOL?! Good times and memories when the world was a little nicer. :)

    A.... M....

Abby - Cassettes, huh? When this came out in June, 1982 I bought it on 8-Track!

    A.... M....

LOL, that's right John S! Good old 8-track! Ahhh, the memories. :)

    A.... M....

    I had the LP.

  21. R.... B....

    Alfa Rococo-Je pense à toi

  22. g.... b....

One of the best songs of the early 80s

  23. r.... s....

i thought it was just me who was reminded of rush......i was thinking this could be a song from hold your fire....so jazzy

  24. D.... B....

    gotta love robert plant

    D.... B....

I will never be able to forget Robert, I'll have a hunger crush on him til I take my last breath and it was ALWAYS my true dream to meet him, attend his concerts, then snag him, get him into my car and keep him forever hahaha! OMG, the absolutely best looking man on this planet. What an incredible turn on his face, bod, voice, and presence he commands, as possibly the best entertainer EVER! 💋

    D.... B....

    I do agree!

  25. J.... L....

This, i would love to see RUSH cover in concert. When RP put out his first solo album, only hit song was Burning Down One Side. But 2 songs down you come to this song which seems to be coming off of the dialectic approach of first Led Zeppelin (and Robert Plant as solo) and Rush in the 70s and early 80s. Then after this song on the album, SLOW DANCER which seems reminescent of Kashmir. i think wistfully of those good old days!

    J.... L....

Kinda reminds me of ''Afterimage'' from Rush's Grace Under Pressure album.

    J.... L....

I actually heard this one quite a bit on the radio when the album came out.

  26. D.... C....

Played this Lp to death when it came out - presumably Plant had all these tunes in his head when Bonham died so I would have been happy if this was the coarse Zeppelin would have taken - with Pages input !!

    D.... C....

Oh my, God rest the best drummer ever to perform on a stage! What an awful loss for the world. RIP BONZO! 💋

    D.... C....

Robert Plant that is the absolute truth. No way can anyone be the drummer that Bonzo was. His death was the ultimate low for all of us Zepheads of the 70's -present day. We all miss him tremendously. RIP John Henry Bonham, RIP.

  27. d.... ....

I think this musical style resembles the Police.

    d.... ....

drmjr78 I was just thinking the same thing, especially the drums.

    d.... ....

    yeah but it's good😁

    J.... S....

    +John S. i love both haunting solos

    J.... S....

    Good info thanks

  30. S.... C....

Phil Collins.....best drummer ever or even a great drummer...nope....never..look up Bernard Purdie....asshole that he may be Ginger Baker.

  31. J.... P....

    Excelente

  32. M.... ....

    M-A-S-T-E-R-P-I-E-C-E.

Phil Collins' best drumming, ever.  Robbie Blunt's guitar work is Zen-meets-Flamenco virtuosity.  One of the best saxophone solos in Rock.  Plant's vocals are perfection.  A tight, taut piece of controlled brio.

    M.... ....

    Bonham>x

    x=everyone else

    M.... ....

Absolutely true that this is one of Phil's defining performances- crisp, on point, and enormously creative.

    M.... ....

DR. FINE Phil played on this song and all of the album except 2 songs 'slow dancer' and 'like you've never been gone'

    M.... ....

This song rips AND takes you places. No east feat!

+Sal Pfeffer Must be an echo in here.

    S.... P....

    +ric hales lol you "heard"it too :p

    S.... P....

Cozy did not use high pitched toms on his drums and Cozy used two bass drums whereas Phil used one. Like I said Cozy is on "Slow Dancer" and "Like I've Never Been Gone". I'm a Phil Collins Kool Aid drinker and his drums just kicked it!

    S.... P....

Wrong, it is Phil. Phil had the concert toms and used one bass drum. Cozy's drums were more thunderous and cannon sounding and used a 7-piece Yamaha (two bass drums, two toms, two floor toms and snare) with Paiste cymbals while Phil was an 8-piece Premier (four concert toms, two floor toms, one bass drum and one snare drum) with Paiste/Zildjian cymbal combo. I guess you haven't heard any Genesis 1970s material where Phil was more adventurous on the drums nor the Brand X material.

    S.... P....

After the breakup of Led Zeppelin in 1980 (following the death of John Bonham), Robert Plant pursued a successful solo career beginning with Pictures at Eleven in 1982. This was one of the lesser known songs on the album, written by Robert Plant and Robbie Blunt. Cozy Powell (Jeff Beck, Rainbow, Whitesnake, Black Sabbath) played drums on  (Like I've never been gone} and "Slow Dancer". Genesis' Phil Collins played on the rest of the album. Pledge Pin drummer was Phil

+NigelTufnelIII Yeah, I think someone already said that.

  35. N.... ....

Truly, a masterpiece, and one of those utterly lost classics the like of which we'll not be hearing on the accoutant-and-computer-selected playlists of contemporary Rock stations.  But who listens to radio anyway, right?  Thanks for posting this gem!

  36. N.... M....

Sounding oh so good this morning :-)

  37. I.... P....

great drumming ,,,,,,,,,,,saw RP in Buffalo in 83,,,,,,,part of history.......

    I.... P....

    I was there!

  38. B.... B....

Killer song! His first few albums are really good. And like this song, they hold up very well.

  39. j.... ....

OH God!! Another "rediscovered" song for me. I listened to my cassette of this endlessly in the early 80's. I  haven't heard it in 25 years, still love  it. How did I  forget it? Drugs?

    j.... ....

Probably drugs..but WTF who cares!? isn't it?..this is great ;)

  40. d.... s....

Robert! Forever! Reciclado total! Musicos de raza! Se adaptaron siempre! Creadores de todo el rock y pop moderno!

  41. J.... ....

RIP: Rafael Ravenscroft - what a great sax player ! Epic sax player - that is !

    J.... ....

Yea. Not really a fan of sax in a rock context, but I ALWAYS loved this one. Perfect, and sooooo smooth.

    J.... ....

    Classic Sax.

    J.... ....

I’m generally not a huge fan of sax but this is brilliant and as soulful as the sax gets.

back in the day Collins were party animals together

    t.... ....

Phil's idea of a party is a nice sweater, goat's milk, and a nap.

    t.... ....

    @genldoz today yes

    t.... ....

    @genldoz
    ...and a peanus

  44. G.... C....

Phil Collins sounds like Stewart Copeland.

    G.... C....

Well, certainly Rush was more or less mimicking their style up through their Hold Your Fire album. But then they started to gravitate back to their roots with the harder sound that they're using today.

    G.... C....

yeah, i know. After 1987, they just slowly and slowly stopped sounding like The Police. Oh well, huh?

    G.... C....

Yeah, to the point where I was worried they were gonna go over-grungy with Vapor Trails. No guitar solos and Peart actually decided to scale back his drumming. BTW, the mixing on this album sucked. Dunno if Paul Northfield was to blame, but they've never done another project with him since!

    G.... C....

@Driven2Beers i consider myself as one of the most LOYAL , DEDICATED,and Radical POLICE FANATIC EVER!!!!!!! I agree with ur opinions completely!!!! # three man bands!!!!!!!!

    G.... C....

@Driven2Beers And in (past) turn Sting said Message In A Bottle was ripped from Don't Fear The reaper.Oh well...

  45. S.... M....

Sweet song. Reminds me of teenage sex.

  46. G.... M....

Great song. The best out of this Plant's album for me. The sax at the end is a fantastic touch and a break away from Zeppelin's sound, very much like this song. Well, I love Zep but it's good to hear something different by Robert. Phil Collins recorded the drums on this one, nice one Phil.

    G.... M....

yea i have to agree with u as well to me this is the best song on the album

  47. P.... F....

did phil play drums on this ? great upload btw dxakis, thank you

    P.... F....

    P.... F....

  50. 1.... ....

Thank goodness for Sirius/XM and classic rewind for playing this. Great song. Thank you for the download.

  51. J.... M....

    Mine Too

  52. S.... G....

Always one of my favorites,,, good music.

  53. B.... W....

Can you upload Worse Than Detroit? I like the version live with Phil Collins but was looking for the version from the album?

  54. m.... ....

I agree. This was by far Plant's best album. He showed that he could break away from just sounding like Zeppelin but unfortunately like many artist around this time they got stuck within that 80s sound and Plant found himself pigeonholed having to make Zep-sounding albums. Pictures at Eleven still holds up great today.

  55. t.... ....

OH so long since I've heard this!!!!! Thanks!!!

  56. P.... G....

    Plants' best work, post Zepplin.

  57. K.... B....

  59. o.... e....

    great drums !

  60. g.... ....

Yup, this one somehow worked for me. Rapheal's sax, Phil's drums.

  61. d.... ....

Best song on this album, and this album was excellent, straight out of the gate following Bonzo's passing and the Zeppelin breakup. Superb!

  62. a.... ....

best fucking song on the album

  63. z.... ....

I had a pair of silver pants like that - just cuz he did! An awesome song and album. Long live Robert Plant! As soulful a white boy as was ever made.
