PJ Harvey - Bitter Branches Lyrics

Bitter branches
spreading out.
There's none more bitter
than the wood.

Into the wide world,
it grows,

twisting under
soldier's feet,
standing in line
and the damp earth underneath.

Holding up their rifles
high,
holding their young wives
who wave goodbye.

Hold up the clear glass
to look and see
soldiers standing
and the roots twist underneath.

Their young wives with white hands
wave goodbye.
Their arms as bitter branches
spreading into the world.

Wave goodbye,
Wave goodbye..

    Bitter branches

Don´t understand why people think this song criticizes the USA. There is no reference to the USA in the video images or the lyrics, at all. England yes. England´s colonialism maybe.

@mjaxdes A. We colonized our entire fucking country. Also, Puerto Rico.. and Hawaii. B. What the fuck does this song have to do with America in the first fucking place? Also, no, dear, taking over the whole world would not have been easy for the US at the end of WW2. That would have required fighting russia, Canada, Australia, the whole of south america, asia, and Africa. You are a naive and ignorant young fool.

This song is too good to play on a device that connects to the internet. But I did anyway. I do what I want.

What gets me is that the USA who are often called colonists and imperialists -- we never colonized any foreign piece of soil. Ok we protected the Phillipines and Guam and all that but we gave back all of Europe to them and paid for it! The US could have easily taken over the world at the exit of WW2 but we just wanted to mind our business and get back to having a car in the driveway and Thanks Giving dinner. Where was I? PJ don't hate US

    m.... ....

    Hawaii? Cuba? Philliphines? Portorico?

    m.... ....

Imperialism doesn't imply having colonies. It also includes using military, covert intelligence, and financial manipulations to control other countries. Few empires have done as much of this as the U.S.

    m.... ....

Yeah the mob is also "protecting" joints and places. Wake up men.

    m.... ....

No offense but everywhere the us went that wasnt europe, death and destruction followed

  13. m.... ....

guess she hates America.. although 80% percent of the money PJ made was from Americans.. no problem LOVE YOU PJ!

    EXCELLENT !

@robokopo i kind of agree, filler track on an awesome album, Pj's voice holds it together -and this stunning video

  16. g.... ....

    @robokopo Agreed, aside the instrumentation.

  17. A.... A....

@robokopo I believe you mean that in your opinion this is passee. Pointing that fact we're not talking about shoes, guess what, to me this is so far the best album of 2011

  18. r.... ....

@EmitFlestiKY English is not my mother tongue, so I can make mistakes. Is English your mother tongue? And if, do you speak any other language? Don't you make mistakes in it? And do you maintain that only native englisch speaker can utter their opinion? What is more, I can express my opinion even I am not musician. This instrumentation is nothing! It is shit! Completely used and abused!

  19. r.... ....

The main value of this song is the voice of PJ Harvey, the instrumentalization however is completely passée...
