Pinegrove - Darkness Lyrics

Suddenly I find
I've got darkness on my mind
It's a question mark that keeps me looking
And it's never satisfied
And it's never what I thought
Saying I'm happy happy when I'm not
Oh I've got darkness on my mind

Leaning out the frame
When it's particulate and gray
I'm perpendicular to my whole being
When I lean a certain way

Saying I'm happy when I'm not
Finding roaches in the pot
I've got darkness on my mind

Some people spend their whole lives looking
For someone who could understand
While meanwhile the lilac's blooming
Are you strong enough to be my man?
I know it's been a long time coming
I'm angry and I know that's weak
I'm longing about open windows
For whatever it is I see

Some people spend their whole lives looking
For someone who could understand
While meanwhile the lilac's blooming
Are you strong enough to be my man?
And I know it's been a long time coming
And it's not like I thought it'd be
So I'm trying not to be so bitter
I'm just looking at it honestly

I know it's been a long time coming
I'm angry and I know that's weak
But I'm longing about open windows
For whatever it is I see
Some people spend their whole lives looking
For someone who could understand
While meanwhile the lilac's blooming
Are you strong enough to be my man?

Blasting in my headphones, staring at the glow in the dark stars on my ceiling, and crying while I smile and dance. Mm.

And while meanwhile a lilac blooming
Am I strong enough to be your man
And I know it's been a long time coming
    I'm angry and I know that's weak
So I'm trying not to be so bitter
I'm just looking at it honestly

Well, I know it's been a long time coming

This is a gorgeous song! Really excellent.

  7. D.... E....

    do these guys tour Wisconsin?

  8. C.... J....

The Hotelier radio on Spotify brought me here

    C.... J....

    Christopher Jenkins same!

  9. C.... S....

Such a good song. This brings me back to the best of 90s indie rock, but not stale in the ways that sound can be now.

  10. D.... F....

This dude sounds like he rapes girls

  11. A.... Z....

This is a cool song! Reminds me of Toad the Wet Sproket

    A.... Z....

    Saves the day forever.

  12. j.... ....

Anyone know why Evan changed the line in the chorus about the lilac?

    j.... ....

My guess? It might’ve been to abstract the song from the controversy (accusations). It’s interesting cause I love the blooming line on the album — however the original brings a new meaning to the lilac line. Instead of persevering through the darkness like the album version suggest the original resembles Evan more in a contemplative state — questioning if he’s right for the girl.

  13. S.... p....

    Where are the lyrics?

  14. J.... L....

This is like some 90's alternative. This song has been stuck in my head.

    J.... L....

Jeffrey Lower dude I know! Anytime I hear it on the radio it gets stuck in my head. Great song for sure though!

  15. m.... m....

Reminds me of old school Jimmy Eat World's Clarity album, favorite of all time, keep it up!

    m.... m....

Would've never thought of that but you're spot on!

  16. G.... ....

This guy is a whiny bitch

  17. w.... ....

Doesn’t anyone else recognize the nod to Pearl Jam with the gender reversal? https://youtu.be/zOAzJFd4KDA. “Are you woman enough to be my man?” :) Love. “Are you strong enough to be my man?” Perfect

  18. K.... B....

    Finding roaches in the pot!

  19. T.... P....

So the first time I heard this song I was driving between Kalamazoo and Battle Creek Michigan, which is between Chicago and Detroit, one of the darker places in the US. They had just done some clear cutting of trees next to the highway, and I had just said goodbye forever to about 15 of my students who I really did not want to say goodbye to. Smelling the pine sap and thinking of them looking out that "open window" made me love this song forever.

    T.... P....

Excellent story. Thank you for sharing!

    T.... P....

    mi for life!!!

    T.... P....

Ha! The first time I heard it, I was driving between Omaha & Sioux Falls

    T.... P....

Lived in BC for 40+ years, dont know what your talking about ine of the datket places?

    T.... P....

    Inspiring.

  20. C.... B....

Yeah... if Death Cab and Nada Surf had a love child it'd be Pinegrove...

    C.... B....

Prolly some decemberists or band of horses genetics as well

  21. l.... ....

    Where you get this?

    l.... ....

for real though (I prefer the new lyrics, but again like how)

  22. C.... M....

This reminds me of some of the old Death Cab

    C.... M....

    More like Ben Kweller@JULIAN ORMOND

    C.... M....

It’s pretty death cab with a little delta spirit

    C.... M....

Oh yeah, Ben Kweller. But also has elements of Todd Rundgren.

    C.... M....

    This reminds me of PINEGROVE

    C.... M....

This is the iconic sound of 90’s alternative. It sounds like deathcab cause they were influenced by the same music. THIS music is like the epitome of every awkward emotion expressed by the alternative bands of decades ago. If you grew up on this sound, you’d recognize it anywhere. They sing my soul!!!!!

  23. M.... C....

    the song is good

  24. I.... ....

Also love the nod to Sublime.

  25. I.... ....

Favorite song of 2018. So glad to finally hear this album, worth the wait.

  26. T.... ....

Favorite track off the album, thanks!

    T.... ....

    fuck you
