Phinehas - Book Of Names Lyrics

When I was sick
The blind looked down through their noles to me
When I a stranger
Had turned back at the foot of your wall between
I was naked, faceless, shame became my chains
You deserve to let me rot
You replaced me with tall trees
The privacy that you sought
Well I was the cause

A book of names
But every page is empty
A neighbourhood lacking other faces
I'd rather be left behind

You can go to Heaven on your own
But wouldn't it be Hell inside the gates all alone
All alone

You can go to Heaven on your own
But wouldn't it be Hell inside the gates all alone
If God looks like you then I'd rather be left behind

Did you depart from me set anchor
And walk alone down the narrow sea
Stepping to shores piously removed from my incessant floorboard
Do you dream your chest could fail?
The long awaited last exhale
So you might climb
Become the vine of sin
24, and a half score away from me
How intellectually we shrunk God to fit my needs
Slowly it occurs to me amidst this blissful apostasy
I'm less ensnared by heresy than the trenches
I dug between them and me

A book of names
But every page is empty
A neighbourhood lacking other faces
I'd rather be left behind

You can go to Heaven on your own
But wouldn't it be Hell inside the gates all alone
All alone

You can go to Heaven on your own
But wouldn't it be Hell inside the gates all alone
If God looks like you then I'd rather be left

Amazing Grace
How sweet the sound of silence
Where you prepare the home
Just to lock the doors and
Throw the key away

You can go to Heaven on your own
But wouldn't it be Hell inside the gates all alone
All alone

You can go to heaven on your own
But wouldn't it be hell inside the gates all alone
If God looks like you then I'd rather be left behind

Phinehas Book Of Names Comments

From what I understand, this is a rebuke against religiosity and good deeds to earn grace. Preaching for the sake of looking better than others, instead of winning souls to christ. Heaven will be lonely because of that. The idea is that some preach to win souls and others preach for false narratives. "If God looks like you I'd rather be left behind."

I love their heavy stuff, but I also freaking love their acoustic stuff. Does any one know more bands that sound like this?

  4. G.... ....

This song is a strong attack to Calvinist theology with a peculiar reference to Investigative judgment, a Seventh-day Adventist theory.

    G.... ....

I'm curious to hear how this is directed towards Calvinism because for whatever reason it made me think of things my Calvinist friend said before I read this comment.

I love this song but I wish I had some biblical citation on what it was based on. Theologically I perfectly understand this song. But it's hard to explain to someone why it's theologically sound, without biblical context.

    N.... S....

Yea. I had a friend tweet them with the question and it's about how as a Christian, one of the greatest crimes is to go to heaven alone. Pretty much meaning what you just said :)

    Nicholas Severson Thank you. c:

Seems to be about people who falsely represent God and the Gospel, especially about people who say that in order to be saved, you have to do good works. As in, "If God actually demands (insert bad doctrine about working your way to heaven somehow here) from me, then I'd rather not follow Him because I'd be following a lie. You can go to heaven on your own but it would be hell because not even you, with all your works, would qualify!"

But we know that God is not a lie, that God seeks mercy and not sacrifice. He knows we cannot pay our way into a right standing with him, into heaven, so He paid the price for us. Simple and plain. Anything else creates a vision of God that is unbiblical and burdensome upon people who have to continually question whether they're good enough or not.

Nicholas Severson well the book of names references the book of life in revelations where the names of every being alive in Christ will see Him in glory. So if every page is empty, that means no one made it to heaven. And if you went there alone, it'd just be you with no one else which is what hell pretty much is since we are beings made for fellowship. Whenever it talks about becoming the vine of sin, it's because we forsake the vine of Christ mentioned in the gospel of John, I think chapter 7 where Jesus says that He is the vine and we are the branches. Also, the part that says that where you go just to "lock the doors and throw the keys away" that's talking about when Jesus said I believe Mathew 7 or (John 14, I can't remember) or in one of the gospels that He is going to prepare a place for us in His kingdom which has many houses. The lyrics are talking about why would Jesus say He's going to prepare a place for us just to lock us out of heaven. There's so much more meaning behind this song, but I think this is enough for now. One of the major take aways I get from this album isn't just against those who say salvation is through works, but also on a personal level it speaks volumes about speaking the Gospel when we need to because one day we're going to heaven, and there won't be any time to regret those who chose to sin where we could have been the light to a darkened person while we live in heaven and they live in hell.

My personal interpretation was closer to the song being about people who are Christians but don’t share their faith with others and sort of keep it deeply personal to them (hence why they’d ‘be behind the gates all alone’) and the first citation that came to mind is Matthew 5:15-16, but if your interpretation is different that scriptural reference may be different as well.

Great song and message and great singing bro 😎!

(I did not include Garrett's background screams towards the end because I can barely make them out lol)

I tried! I marked what I definitely wasn't sure about.

    when I was sick,
the blind looked down through their nose to me.

    all alone

    If God looks like you,
then I'd rather be left behind

    "Did you depart from me"
    set anchor, and walk along
    down the narrow seas,
stepping to shores, piously removed, from my incesant floorboard,
do you dream your chest can fill,
    all the weight/way*
    of our exhale/sick sail*,
so you might climb, become the vine of sin*
24, and a half score, away from me, how intellectually, we shrunk,
    God to fit my needs,
    slowly, it occurs to me,
