I guess you could call this 80's Christian.

When I first heard this song in 1999, I was stupefied, it was strange, dark, with a medieval, renaissance, strange, but at the same time powerful, and with wonderful lyrics, and I do not know why it could not stop to listen to it again and again. His guitar riff, that background harmonium, transported me to another side, and it turned out to be a dark song that led me to think about what the lyrics finally said, the betrayal, the disillusionment, "I wonder how ...". the many great songs of Petra without doubts.

I would love to hear this remixed and the bass has more power to really raise the tempo and set a firm bottom to this tune; it has so much strength to really provide depth.

I was blessed with tickets 3xs to see Petra during my teenage years, what I will remember always remember is the alter calls and how the Holy Spirit moved on the hearts of so many . They had counselors, pastor's, Sunday school teachers from area churches ready to help people. They themselves were helping people, it was so beautiful. In those concerts many people called upon the Lord as savior. Those were the 3 best new years eve's I've ever had. They eat share verses and it was just awesome.. Then we'd rock 😁

I remember hearing that nobb Bob Larson casting demons out of people who are mentally ill, not demon possessed, claiming that the backwards recording was a praised to Satan and that Petra always sacrificed small animals before playing. What a loon. Great song, I heard that Paul Stanley of Kiss said he really enjoyed Petra's music especially this album. Kiss did the song God gave rock and roll to you. Amazing.

Very cool. And it's awesome that they put that backwards message in there cuz I can imagine that some were accusing Petra of secretly worshipping satan (with a small "s" on purpose just for disrespect) like some of their secular rock counterparts. What a cool memory u shared!

@Douglas Henry Sr I did a paper on that in college. There was back masking (messages) in many songs. And guess what, the devil doesn't stop just because we caught him. It is still going on.

J Slick was Petra's Left keyboard Hand, J Lawry was Petra's Right keyboard Hand. Many Classics under both. I'm glad J Slick was writing/playing the keys in this era or we may never have the sound that IS Classic Petra. Lawry didn't join until the very end of the recording process for BtS...

Not long after, Volz left also. Love Schlitt, but IMO, Back to the Street was written for Volz in mind and I dream of hearing his version of those songs. lol

Yes, Bob Hartman could write like the dickens. I'll be honest, but I've not seen a writer put God's to work in more or better ways. Not sure if he wrote every single lyric to every single song, but songs like Graverobber, Bema Seat, Chameleon, Creed... etc.

If there was someone who could pull the non-obvious out of the Bible and build a song around it, it was Hartman. Today's music just isn't the same. I wish the guys would get back together and do a part 2 of Classic Petra. There are many classics left to rerecord. I've worn that live album out time and time again already. lol

Why do most Christian rock bands suck? Petra, and this song particularly, proves that good, fairly-heavy music can be good and heavily religious at the same time. Not even religious myself, but this song is a solid rocker.
Also, the synth melody after the chorus is incredible. Love the weird, kinda medieval/renaissance harmony there.

Ok as a person who is truly a metal head and whose favorite band is Metallica you are crazy in thinking that there is not equally excellent metal or hard rock on the Christian side. Look for it. You can get avton of them on amazon

Resurrection Band (Rez Band)

@Andrea Cadle My theory is that organizations and bands that make and promote christian music are trying to spread their message first, and make art second. Thus the quality is not given due consideration and what you're left with is generally shilling religion too hard. For musicians who are already pursueing the art, making a song about their religious ideas doesn't have to come at the expense of the style or the rhytm, because that's second nature to them.

You'd love another Christian band... you should check them out... They go/went by the name, 'KANSAS.'

My mom raised me on this and as a Chrustian teen in the 80's her mom let her get away with this as to mainstream rock she disapproved of.

@J Slick Well I just went and listened to Grave Robber, and let me tell u I hadn't heard any of these songs in around 25 years. They bring back wonderful memories of my father, a gifted guitarist and man of God, used to jam all day on these songs. If this is your work then THANK YOU. Bout to listen to all the hits u named.

Man, i love this song, but my favorite thing to do is listen to the first part on vinyl and play it backwards. "What are you looking for the devil for, when you outta be looking for the Lord." THUMBS UP PETRA! love you guys soooo much! 

That's part of the problem I see with the world now, people seem to be too busy looking for evil and negativity in things rather than looking for good and positivity in the world and in each other. If you spend all your time focusing on negative thoughts and negative things, why are you surprised when negative things happen?

I had a lot of problems growing up, ultra-right-wing family being one of many. It was so comforting to be able to bang my head to this when no one else was around. I always wished I could play like this. I'm glad for Petra being there, and Greg X Vols. It doesn't matter, soft ballads or kick-butt metal, Petra had it going on.

@gingervytis : Hey, my brother and I figured that out in the late 80's - we had this little keyboard that you could record yourself, play it back, even reverse it. We did it for this song intro, and that is what it says. I first heard these Petra albums on records, later cassettes and now CD's (and imported to AAC/WMA/MP3). Great music with great message, and Greg X. Volz has amazing range. Thanks for uploading it.

@champ41289 thats true , seen em in concert several times , the keyboard talking is easy , its programed , what you hear at the beginning fo this song is backmasking, something bands used to do back in the 70s & 80s , theyd record something backwards on the album intentionally, you would have to play it backwards to hear what it really says , satanic bands used to do it a lot , what Petra wrote here says "what are you looking for the devil for when you should be looking for the Lord" ;)

This is one of my all time fave Petra tunes... I remember it from when I was a teenager and I had this album. Now that I'm a parent and have experienced betrayal this song takes on new meaning. It really hits home.

@XxzertX Another bit of trivia...God's name in the Old Testament was not Jehovah; it was Jahweh. The ancient Hebrews felt that it was disrespectful to put God's name in writing, so they took the Consonants from Jahweh (God), combined it with the vowels from Adonai (Lord or master), to come up with the name Jehowah...which was translated into English as Jehovah.

What I like about Petra was the ability to stand above all the other christians bands and raise the bar in terms of experimenting and producing very classic rock along with other acts, it seems most christian bands nowadays lack any character or weight within their compositions, and they tend to follow the bandwagon, as to Petra, they stood out with their own sound

Greg Volz sang this song at our church this morning. Our pastor is good friends with him and he sang about ten songs.He still is eneretic and fun even at 60.I'm so glad PETRA is getting back together! I am a huge fan,and I'm only 17. My mom's an even bigger fan,lol.

I remembered this song as I went to a Christian fundamentalist high school in the 80s. (I am Wiccan to be honest, but have absolutely no issues with Christianity.) I actually liked this song, preferred Petra to the other Christian bands I'd heard in high school, but then again I preferred 70s/80s rock to start with.

That is so cool, I went to a concert, probably around the same time, they came to Barrington College in Rhode Island. Randy Matthews was there too. The first Christian concert I'd ever been to. then years later, I saw them in Tulsa. Great music, great ministry! I still have two vinyls, which I still listen to! Never did pick up the guitar though, but good for you!

Petra came to my little home town of Hobbs, New Mexico in 1978 and played at my church youth center. They inspired me to play guitar. After the show, I asked one of them what kind of guitar style it was when he moved his fingers so fast, and he told me it was lead guitar. And the rest is history. I purchased a $20 used electric guitar from a pawn shop and learned guitar on my own. Played guitar for my high school jazz band and my own rock band for our school talent show. Great memories!

This is a Petra Classic! One of the best songs they ever did! Petra paved the way for alot of the artists today, and most of them grew up listening to Petra. Hats off to the greatest Christain rock band ever!
