Petra - Judas' Kiss Lyrics

[Based on Luke 22:47, 48]

I wonder how it makes you feel when the prodigal won't come home
I wonder how it makes you feel when he'd rather be on his own
I wonder what it's like for you when a lamb has gone astray
I wonder what it's like for you when your children disobey

It must be like another thorn struck in your brow
It must be like another close friend's broken vow
It must be like another nail right through your wrist
It must be just like
Just like Judas' kiss

I wonder how it makes you feel when no one seeks your face
I wonder how it makes you feel when they give up in the race
I wonder what it's like for you when they willingly disobey
I wonder what it's like for you when they willingly walk away

I prayed and asked the Lord what are they saying at the beginning of the song? My new tape and cassette player flipped the song and I heard "why are you searching for satan when you should be searching for the Lord!! " I broke down and cried!! Thank you, Lord, for letting me hear this! Kristen Rivera

  14. j.... ....

I guess you could call this 80's Christian.

  15. s.... f....

When I first heard this song in 1999, I was stupefied, it was strange, dark, with a medieval, renaissance, strange, but at the same time powerful, and with wonderful lyrics, and I do not know why it could not stop to listen to it again and again. His guitar riff, that background harmonium, transported me to another side, and it turned out to be a dark song that led me to think about what the lyrics finally said, the betrayal, the disillusionment, "I wonder how ...". the many great songs of Petra without doubts.

  16. C.... ....

I would love to hear this remixed and the bass has more power to really raise the tempo and set a firm bottom to this tune; it has so much strength to really provide depth.

  17. L.... S....

    "...Just Like Judas Kiss!!!'

  24. G.... G....

I was blessed with tickets 3xs to see Petra during my teenage years, what I will remember always remember is the alter calls and how the Holy Spirit moved on the hearts of so many . They had counselors, pastor's, Sunday school teachers from area churches ready to help people. They themselves were helping people, it was so beautiful. In those concerts many people called upon the Lord as savior. Those were the 3 best new years eve's I've ever had. They eat share verses and it was just awesome.. Then we'd rock 😁

  25. W.... W....

Saw them in concert in 1983

    W.... W....

I saw them i think in the same year beyond belief came out. Awesome show.

  26. R.... f....

I remember hearing that nobb Bob Larson casting demons out of people who are mentally ill, not demon possessed, claiming that the backwards recording was a praised to Satan and that Petra always sacrificed small animals before playing. What a loon. Great song, I heard that Paul Stanley of Kiss said he really enjoyed Petra's music especially this album. Kiss did the song God gave rock and roll to you. Amazing.

  27. J.... S....

Petra is a cool group from my time. they never get 👵

  28. J.... G....

This reminds me of those '80's BIG boom boxes we used to carry on our shoulders to blast everybody off the map, not to mention perforate our own eardrums LOL!!!

  29. C.... R....

I prayed and asked the Lord what were they saying at the beginning of this song. Well, in my new cassette player in my car this song started playing. The cassette some how flipped to the other side and it said "why are you searching for satan when you should be searching for the Lord" !! I started crying and thanking the Lord for showing this to me in such a cool way!! Amen! Kristen Rivera

    C.... R....

thanks i needed the laugh that is great cameleon is so powerful the lyrics i love

    C.... R....

    Christopher Rivera Hmmm! Yeah, right!

    C.... R....

    +A B It's the power of prayer

    C.... R....

Very cool. And it's awesome that they put that backwards message in there cuz I can imagine that some were accusing Petra of secretly worshipping satan (with a small "s" on purpose just for disrespect) like some of their secular rock counterparts. What a cool memory u shared!

  30. J.... S....

    Favorite subtle tidbits:
Descending line in synth, min 7th, maj 6, aug 5th, 5th starting 2:03.
Growling bent geetar lick 2:28, 3:31. Glad Bob only played it that way a couple of times, else it would have lost the surprise.
Timed delay on geetar solo intro: 2:57.
    The two-part counterpoint at 4:13.

Hail Satan! Judas be my guide!

  32. Y.... H....

I used to think the Intro was some mediterranean/ Jewish language, lol.. especially the 'Nicolino' part... Awesome riff, solo, & classical outtro,

  33. J.... A....

The beginning is recorded in reverse. It says " Why are you looking for the Devil , when you should be looking for the Lord."

    J.... A....

@Douglas Henry Sr I did a paper on that in college. There was back masking (messages) in many songs. And guess what, the devil doesn't stop just because we caught him. It is still going on.

    J.... A....

    Great idea from Bob

    J.... A....

@Douglas Henry Sr There really is such a thing as Back masking.

I played the famous Queen song "another one bites the dust" backwards, and they say "marijuana, marijuana, it's fun to smoke marijuana".

Also! The famous Tom Petty song "Running Down A Dream", if you play it backwards. At the begining it says "I hope you go broke".

So yeah Back Masking is real stuff.

    J.... A....

I have wondered what meant for years. Thanks

    J.... A....

@extremedrivr You should try stairway to heaven!!!!

  34. N.... H....

Massive Respect; The fact these cats could 'replicate this track 'live' is a feat in itself, ie Captured in Time and Space. Once again Massive Respect.

  38. S.... ....

this is one of my favorite songs of this band! Petra is amazing!

  39. C.... N....

second best christian album of 1982 was the underated rock band Fireworks album Name Sightseeing at night, check it out

    C.... N....

Craig Neeve I have the Fireworks Sight Seeing at night album!!

  40. P.... M....

you all know what the backmask says ?

    P.... M....

Lawry greatest keyboardist ever man wonder why he ever left the group wished they were still making records and Bob Hartman can that guy write music he fantastic

    P.... M....

+Paul Meier something like "What are you lookin for' the devil for when you oughta be lookin' for the Lord?". At the time many people were obsessed with hidden satanic messages in music.

    P.... M....

J Slick was Petra's Left keyboard Hand, J Lawry was Petra's Right keyboard Hand. Many Classics under both. I'm glad J Slick was writing/playing the keys in this era or we may never have the sound that IS Classic Petra. Lawry didn't join until the very end of the recording process for BtS...

Not long after, Volz left also. Love Schlitt, but IMO, Back to the Street was written for Volz in mind and I dream of hearing his version of those songs. lol

    P.... M....

The brain of the band was always Bob.

    P.... M....

Yes, Bob Hartman could write like the dickens. I'll be honest, but I've not seen a writer put God's to work in more or better ways. Not sure if he wrote every single lyric to every single song, but songs like Graverobber, Bema Seat, Chameleon, Creed... etc.

If there was someone who could pull the non-obvious out of the Bible and build a song around it, it was Hartman. Today's music just isn't the same. I wish the guys would get back together and do a part 2 of Classic Petra. There are many classics left to rerecord. I've worn that live album out time and time again already. lol

  41. E.... W....

What are you looking for the devil for when you outta be looking for the Lord!! backward at the start of the song

    E.... W....

my sister has been wondering about that, thanks.

    E.... W....

Had the record on vinyl played it backwords to show my brother

    E.... W....

I was in my car and before I played this song I prayed and asked the Lord what are they saying there? I kid you not, the tape flipped over one time and it said why you searching for satan when you should be searching for the Lord!! I started crying! Kristen Rivera

  42. J.... M....

Why do most Christian rock bands suck? Petra, and this song particularly, proves that good, fairly-heavy music can be good and heavily religious at the same time. Not even religious myself, but this song is a solid rocker.
Also, the synth melody after the chorus is incredible. Love the weird, kinda medieval/renaissance harmony there.

    J.... M....

Ok as a person who is truly a metal head and whose favorite band is Metallica you are crazy in thinking that there is not equally excellent metal or hard rock on the Christian side. Look for it. You can get avton of them on amazon

    J.... M....

    Resurrection Band (Rez Band)

    J.... M....

@Andrea Cadle My theory is that organizations and bands that make and promote christian music are trying to spread their message first, and make art second. Thus the quality is not given due consideration and what you're left with is generally shilling religion too hard. For musicians who are already pursueing the art, making a song about their religious ideas doesn't have to come at the expense of the style or the rhytm, because that's second nature to them.

    J.... M....

You'd love another Christian band... you should check them out... They go/went by the name, 'KANSAS.'

  43. P.... ....

My mom raised me on this and as a Chrustian teen in the 80's her mom let her get away with this as to mainstream rock she disapproved of.

  44. E.... H....

This is Petra's "Stairway to Heaven"

If they are known for ANY song, this is the one they will be remembered all-time for

    E.... H....

    +Edward Hutchinson

I hope they / we are remembered also for Coloring Song, Grave Robber, Not of This World, Stand Up, Second Wind, Bema Seat, etc.

    E.... H....

+J Slick and many, many others. They deserved to be worldwide phenoms

    E.... H....

@J Slick Well I just went and listened to Grave Robber, and let me tell u I hadn't heard any of these songs in around 25 years. They bring back wonderful memories of my father, a gifted guitarist and man of God, used to jam all day on these songs. If this is your work then THANK YOU. Bout to listen to all the hits u named.

    E.... H....

    Because of the Backmasking.

  45. J.... E....

    Such a powerful song!

  46. N.... G....

Always loved that guitar riff.  And prolly my favorite album artwork too

  47. H.... E....

Well this video was available on mobile and now its not? Why?

  48. D.... C....

    I love this song.

  49. i.... ....

    Robert Lott, define "satanic bands".

  50. K.... W....

amen brother but will you recognize the difference if you all wrong about timing of the first Resurrection

  51. P.... A....

The beginning is backwards masking of, "Why are you looking for the devil, when you ought to be looking for the Lord."

Yes, I personally played my album backwards by finger to hear it myself.

    P.... A....

they put it there because people were playing albums backwards to see if it said anything

    P.... A....

Uh Never Heard That Before ...

  52. t.... d....

got into them in the early 80's totaly be mistake because i picked up a cassette that someone throw out beside the road been a fan ever sence

    t.... d....

    Their loss, your gain!

  53. D.... L....

Anyone got any idea what they're saying before the guitar starts? love the song (and the whole album)
    though, thanks for posting it

  54. G.... M....

I'm not remotely a Christian, but I've gotta say, this song kinda rocks.

    G.... M....

Geo X Christ loves you I have found that out for myself in my life I thought the same thing you thought for thirty years

    G.... M....

Read Romans 8 first!! Then decide what is real !! Trust me! God is real for sure!! Just try that...

    G.... M....

Roman's 10:9 that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.

    G.... M....

So many great groups out there!! X-Sinner,WhiteCross.Whiteheart,Shout,Mastedon,Magdallan,REZ band...Stryper,King's X..David Zaffiro..Ken Tamplin.Rock on man!!

    G.... M....

Sorry, people, but quoting verses from the Bible does not prove that anything in the Bible happened or is true. I was a Petra fan in a Christian for 40 years and now I am an atheist. Quoting a religious book does not help. Go look up numbers 13 where God orders abortion. I've never heard anyone quote that.

  55. j.... ....

Again "why do you look for the devil backwards, when you should be looking for the Lord forward." take that larson.

  56. j.... ....

How is a song, pushing 30, STILL inspiring debate? OUTSTANDING. PTL.

    j.... ....

Because it has universal appeal to anyone who's tried to be a Christian.

    j.... ....

Because people have nothing better to do with their time! Lol!

    j.... ....

    PTL, LOL

  57. J.... W....

Man, i love this song, but my favorite thing to do is listen to the first part on vinyl and play it backwards. "What are you looking for the devil for, when you outta be looking for the Lord." THUMBS UP PETRA! love you guys soooo much!

  58. T.... J....

That's part of the problem I see with the world now, people seem to be too busy looking for evil and negativity in things rather than looking for good and positivity in the world and in each other. If you spend all your time focusing on negative thoughts and negative things, why are you surprised when negative things happen?

  59. W.... B....

    Shout at the devil anyone?

  60. V.... D....

One of the best songs ever of all genres!

  61. t.... ....

    Or Rose-Colored Stained Glass Windows.

  62. j.... ....

This is the video of the day for Aug. 3, 2013 on Rockandroll Bible on Facebook. thanks for sharing it.

  63. B.... S....

Wow, thanks for the memories!!! Such a sweet compilation. :) woot

  64. S.... M....

I had a lot of problems growing up, ultra-right-wing family being one of many. It was so comforting to be able to bang my head to this when no one else was around. I always wished I could play like this. I'm glad for Petra being there, and Greg X Vols. It doesn't matter, soft ballads or kick-butt metal, Petra had it going on.

  65. G.... k....

Petra used backmasking at the beginning of this song. The backmasking says, "What are you looking for the Devil for, when you ought to be looking for the Lord?"

  66. c.... ....

    80's Rock RulZz

  67. N.... ....

I saw these guys in concert when I was a kid at Central elementary school in Nampa,Idaho.I thought this song was cool but in the long run I liked Motley Crue better.

  68. D.... R....

Right on Mr. 1indianasmith. Preach it brother.

  69. A.... L....

É com grande prazer que me inscrevo nesse canal.

  70. M.... A....

Knowing the truth about Judas takes away from the songs meaning. But nonetheless still a great tune.

  71. M.... ....

@gingervytis : Hey, my brother and I figured that out in the late 80's - we had this little keyboard that you could record yourself, play it back, even reverse it. We did it for this song intro, and that is what it says. I first heard these Petra albums on records, later cassettes and now CD's (and imported to AAC/WMA/MP3). Great music with great message, and Greg X. Volz has amazing range. Thanks for uploading it.

  72. F.... ....

God, I will never know how much I hurt You!

  73. J.... M....

@champ41289 thats true , seen em in concert several times , the keyboard talking is easy , its programed , what you hear at the beginning fo this song is backmasking, something bands used to do back in the 70s & 80s , theyd record something backwards on the album intentionally, you would have to play it backwards to hear what it really says , satanic bands used to do it a lot , what Petra wrote here says "what are you looking for the devil for when you should be looking for the Lord" ;)

  74. T.... ....

This is one of my all time fave Petra tunes... I remember it from when I was a teenager and I had this album. Now that I'm a parent and have experienced betrayal this song takes on new meaning. It really hits home.

  75. J.... M....

@XxzertX Another bit of trivia...God's name in the Old Testament was not Jehovah; it was Jahweh. The ancient Hebrews felt that it was disrespectful to put God's name in writing, so they took the Consonants from Jahweh (God), combined it with the vowels from Adonai (Lord or master), to come up with the name Jehowah...which was translated into English as Jehovah.

  76. k.... ....

What I like about Petra was the ability to stand above all the other christians bands and raise the bar in terms of experimenting and producing very classic rock along with other acts, it seems most christian bands nowadays lack any character or weight within their compositions, and they tend to follow the bandwagon, as to Petra, they stood out with their own sound

  77. p.... W....

@champ41289 it is back masking...backwerd words ..on an lp cecord i had this song...it sed sumthing,,wen i play the lp backwwerds but i do not reemeber wut it sed

  78. w.... ....

@champ41289 The beginning of the song is backmasking for the phrase "What are you looking for the devil for when you ought to be looking for the Lord"

  79. P.... ....

This was the first Christian rock song I ever heard.

  80. s.... ....

I used to listen to these guys and Stryper when I was in high school.

  81. H.... ....

Greg Volz sang this song at our church this morning. Our pastor is good friends with him and he sang about ten songs. He still is eneretic and fun even at 60.I'm so glad PETRA is getting back together! I am a huge fan,and I'm only 17. My mom's an even bigger fan, lol.

  82. u.... ....

@champ41289 Hey man! Yes he did that in his keyboard solo with a synthesizer sampler. you should be able to find it by looking for "Petra Jesus Loves You"

  83. b.... ....

This song has the coolest guitar riff I have ever heard . . and I have heard lots of them.

  84. b.... ....

One of my favorite Petra songs.

  85. S.... ....

@joyfilledsoul Very convicting! It really puts you in Jesus shoes, how he feels when we sin!

  86. a.... ....

I remembered this song as I went to a Christian fundamentalist high school in the 80s. (I am Wiccan to be honest, but have absolutely no issues with Christianity.) I actually liked this song, preferred Petra to the other Christian bands I'd heard in high school, but then again I preferred 70s/80s rock to start with.

  87. G.... ....

    It must be... just lies...
    just like Judas kiss

  88. g.... ....

If you play that weird stuff at the beginning backwards, you can here this:
"What're you looking for the devil for, when you oughta be lookin' for the Lord?"

    True.

  89. B.... A....

That is so cool, I went to a concert, probably around the same time, they came to Barrington College in Rhode Island. Randy Matthews was there too. The first Christian concert I'd ever been to. then years later, I saw them in Tulsa. Great music, great ministry! I still have two vinyls, which I still listen to! Never did pick up the guitar though, but good for you!

  90. D.... W....

Petra came to my little home town of Hobbs, New Mexico in 1978 and played at my church youth center. They inspired me to play guitar. After the show, I asked one of them what kind of guitar style it was when he moved his fingers so fast, and he told me it was lead guitar. And the rest is history. I purchased a $20 used electric guitar from a pawn shop and learned guitar on my own. Played guitar for my high school jazz band and my own rock band for our school talent show. Great memories!

  91. B.... M....

Petra used backmasking at the beginning of this song. The backmasking says, "What are you looking for the Devil for, when you ought to be looking for the Lord?"

  92. O.... ....

I seem to remember the back masking section saying,"What are you looking for the devil for, when you oughta be looking for the Lord?" Musta been in the liner notes as I wore this tape out as a kid! Greg X rocks!

  93. d.... ....

Greg Volz was a pretty good singer.

  94. S.... ....

This is a Petra Classic! One of the best songs they ever did! Petra paved the way for alot of the artists today, and most of them grew up listening to Petra. Hats off to the greatest Christain rock band ever!

  95. R.... ....

    Two ways:

    1. I played the LP backwards.

    2. It's posted on here earlier. :)

  96. r.... ....

How did you find that out?

  97. R.... ....

"Why are you looking for the Devil when you should be looking for the Lord."

  98. p.... ....

I was a kid then and didn't know what to believe
