Who is the lead vocal in this recording?

I’ve heard all Argent, Petra, and KISS do this song and I still have no favorites because they are all different. I like how Argent does it a little softer than the others, Petra makes a build-up to the song, and KISS must have practiced daily to have everything and everyone when they sang this. That is the awesome thing about bands, they have to do things their way even it’s a song that has been done before.

Spectacular! I saw Petra in Burlington, Vermont back in the mid 80s and fanastic! The dried ice/ smoke coming off the stage smelt like chocolate. What super sounds.

it's so weird starting with the KISS version, which has all these excellent chord changes that all the older versions lack. it feels like that part of that one Beatles behind the scenes film where we see Paul helping Ringo compose Octopus's Garden and the original chorus had this really awkward key change that wasn't nearly as good as the final version

I just learned that KISS recorded this, lol. This is the version I’m familiar with. It just doesn’t seem like the kind of message KISS was particularly interested in. Oh well. I think He did give us all music. Sometimes some stuff doesn’t sound very musical, but the tone-deaf and arhythmic people are allowed to listen to whatever they think is music, too, I guess, lol.

I'm sure that a lot of people don't know that the producer of this Petra album(and song) was Austin Roberts, who is better known for performing the original Scooby Doo and Partridge Family theme songs and this sort of has a similar feel to it while it still rocks at the same time. You can hear his voice in the background vocals working with Greg Volz pretty nicely.

Kiss had not covered this song when Petra did it so they had no influence on Petra. Per Wiki Kiss covered the Petra version of the song.
In 1991, the song was notably covered by Kiss under the title God Gave Rock 'N' Roll to You II. This version's lyrics and arrangement more closely followed the Petra version of the song. It was released for the film Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey.

Originally released in 1973 by Argent. The Kiss version is a cover of the original. This is another cover version. It wasn't about a dead drummer, and paul Stanley didn't give anyone permission to play it. It's not his song in the first place. Not real sure why a christian band is covering it, since most of them think rock and roll is devil music anyway. But whatever, it's a good song, and just for the record, Kiss does the best job of it.

@Shitlord the idea that rock and roll music is devil music was one of the main teachings of the church i was forced to go to in the 80s when i was a teen. This was a pentacostal born again holy roller church in the Adirondacks.

I'm a church going person and love God and Jesus with all my heart. I like this version as much as the KISS version. I have been a fan of KISS for over 38 years. If you don't like KISS I respect that.

Dion Richardson the version you mentioned was the first one I heard by them. I heard this version maybe a few months later. my dad had it on vinyl. I agree, I prefer the BTS version more. in later years, KISS did an awesome cover as well.

Also, having listened to the original Argent version I must say that the hook and chorus are the only good parts of this song. Its only fair to say that it only became popular because of the variations on its verses done by different bands over the years. First by Petra with their Christian version, then KISS taking it to an entirely different audience.

I forgot how prog Petra was in the 70s. This is proof that at least one Christian band was up there with Yes and the other groups of their day. Much different from 80s Christian rock that had a quite distinctively different sound (including Petra during those years).

I like this one as well as the version on "Beat the System." I remember latching on to the song when Swaggart flew into a rage, saying that recording a song called "God Gave Rock'n'Roll To You" proved that Petra was a band of Satan's demons. (Of course, Swaggart insists that the Holy Spirit cannot inhabit anything but country music, which makes him a complete fool.) That's when I really became a Petra fan. Love all their music no matter which lead singer is singing.

It's true that Argent are the original group who produced this and I remember it well. One thing is certain, it was not Petra. They have given a false impression with this ownership, and, given another false impression as 'christians' by preaching the lie that God gave gave rock n roll and put it in the souls of everyone..
