Peter, Paul And Mary - The Marvelous Toy Lyrics

When I was just a wee little lad,
Full of health and joy,
My father homeward came one night
And gave to me a toy.
A wonder to behold it was
With many colors bright
And the moment I laid eyes on it,
It became my heart's delight.

It went "Zip" when it moved, and "Bop" when it stopped,
and "Whirrr" when it stood still.
I never knew just what it was and I guess I never will.

The first time that I picked it up
I had a big surprise
Cause right on the bottom were two big buttons
That looked like big green eyes
I first pushed one and then the other,
Then I twisted its lid
And when I set it down again, here is what it did:

It went "Zip" when it moved, and "Bop" when it stopped,
and "Whirrr" when it stood still.
I never knew just what it was and I guess I never will.

It first marched left, and then marched right
And then marched under a chair
And when I looked where it had gone
It wasn't even there
I started to cry, but my daddy laughed
'Cause he knew that I would find,
When I turned around my marvelous toy
Would be chugging from behind.

It went "Zip" when it moved, and "Bop" when it stopped,
and "Whirrr" when it stood still.
I never knew just what it was and I guess I never will.

The years have gone by too quickly it seems,
I have my own little boy
And yesterday I gave to him
My marvelous little toy:
His eyes nearly popped right out of his head
And he gave a squeal of glee!
Neither one of us knows just what it is
But he loves it just like me!

It still goes...

It went "Zip" when it moved, and "Bop" when it stopped,
and "Whirrr" when it stood still.
I never knew just what it was and I guess I never will.

This was my first ever album. A gift from my brother in 1969 when I was 5yrs old. I wore it out, played it constantly. My next 2 albums were Rubber Soul and Crosby Stills & Nash, also from my brother who was sick of hearing this over and over. I wore them out too. Thanks Bro.

I have always loved this song. It's one of those songs played at Christmas even though it's not a Christmas song. The toy makes me think of one I remember as a kid. Anyone remember Odd Ogg?

I was raised on this record, if anyone still knows what a record is!

    K.... W....

Don't worry, I'm on the young end of being a millenial (or at least I think that's what I'm classified as) and trust me, we all know what records are and so do people even younger than us (I mean I guess I can't speak for every single person my age but I would reasonably say "almost everyone.") Most of us probably haven't used a record (although I have, if that makes you feel any better), but we do know what they are! 😊

I was given this album for Christmas the year it came out. I was already a huge fan of PP&M and this song was probably my favorite one from the album. I learned to play the guitar, and played and sang it to my much younger brother at bedtime. Years later I became a daycare teacher and taught many children this song

When our sons were little we played this song to them and sang along. Now that our oldest son will be a father for the first time, we are giving him this song to sing to his child.

  19. S.... S....

I lost this song for five decades. I remembered it from when I was a child and never heard or saw it again until today.

The Chad Mitchell Trio also does a great version.

I love this song! But now I'm thinking that Micah Johnson didn't know just what it was, and he never will. He had a big surprise. Which is fine. But this song may never seem quite the same to me now.

Wow! I was a small child when I heard this song and have been trying to find out what the name of it was ever since. I only remembered a couple of lines of it. I have asked people, googled it, and had never found it. Then I put in what little I remembered of it into YouTube and you found it instantly for me! This made my 2015 Christmas! Thanks YouTube!

Never give up looking for those old songs. Sometimes you find them long after you figure you never will. :-)
