Peter, Paul And Mary - Light One Candle Lyrics

Light one candle for the Maccabee children
Give thanks that their light didn't die!
Light one candle for the pain they endured
When their right to exist was denied!
Light one candle for the terrible sacrifice
Justice and freedom demand!
And light one candle for the wisdom to know
When the peacemaker's time is at hand!

Don't let the light go out!
It's lasted for so many years!
Don't let the light go out!
Let it shine through our love and our tears.

Light one candle for the strength we all need
To never become our own foe!
And light one candle for those who are suff'ring
Pain we learned so long ago!
Light one candle for all we believe in,
Let anger not tear us apart!
And light one candle to bind us together
With peace as the song in our heart!

Don't let the light go out!
It's lasted for so many years!
Don't let the light go out!
Let it shine through our love and our tears.

What is the memory that's valued so highly
That we keep it alive in that flame?
What's the commitment to those who have died
When we cry out they've not died in vain,
We have come this far, always believing
That justice will somehow prevail!
This is the burning. This is the promise,
This why we will not fail!

Don't let the light go out!
It's lasted for so many years!
Don't let the light go out!
Let it shine through our love and our tears.

Don't let the light go out!
Don't let the light go out!
Don't let the light go out!

My school does a holiday concert with the band orchestra and choir of a bunch of holiday songs and stuff and they always it with a full choir version of this song with a piano instead and the choir lines themselves up in the aisles of the auditorium and it’s actually the coolest thing every, really glad this was decided to be the opener(and yes I’m in the band)
It ended up being similar to this rendition of it https://youtu.be/StB_ehpZyN4 and its really beautiful

Do not forget that as for the name of the beginning of the song the Maccabee children who they are asking a candle being lite for while the Maccabees were getting ready for an assault upon the Greeks who had brought destruction down to Jerusalem if a mother had circumcised her child the child would be killed and hung around the neck of the mother with a warning if she would do it again with another son then she would be the one killed. It was a very dark time. I get it Greeks thought it was a high crime to mar the body and taking foreskin was considered such a crime against nature. But the thing was that being set apart is something that we Jews follow not because they're an easy way to live but because we have faith in the customs and practices that we have since Abraham.

I love this song. Several years ago I put together a synagogue program for Soviet Jewry and wanted to use this song. In the pre-internet world, I tried multiple sources to find the sheet music for the cantor with no luck. I called my friend Theo Bikel who gave me Peter's phone number in New York. Peter graciously sent me the sheet music. The program went over extremely well and I'll never forget Peter's kindness and generosity. Baruch ha shem.

    C.... F....

Hey, that's an interesting story. I have never heard about the concept of Soviet Jewry before, what does it mean?

  8. f.... ....

Thank you, Rudi. I started my musical listening journey with PP&M when I was a child and what an expansive journey it has been with so many flavors, rock, jazz, opera, punk/new wave. And through it all, PP&M continue to deeply move me.

This is the first song that came to me after witnessing what happened in Alabama on the first night of Hanukkah. I waited to comment on it until now because I was praying that we would sing it tonight at synagogue. We didn’t, but it was great anyway. Perhaps at an adults only Hanukkah?

  30. N.... ....

Was listening to this earlier today, with all the turmoil going on right now and the start of Channukah. I'll have to come back to this more in the next couple years.

this is my new anthem, for the work to get Bernie elected to be president of the USA. He has the US constitution engraved in his heart. He is FOR all the things which we need as a country. He is FOR the common good. Oh, Lord, "don't let the light go out!"

    M.... N....

what light- we are now the united states of trump=== what a @#%&( joke!!!!!!!!

    M.... N....

Sadly, middle america and the South will NEVER allow a Jewish president, as they will show quietly with their votes, but not as much out loud.

    M.... N....

Yes, dear, Bernie also has the NRA and the gun lobby engraved in his dark conscience and their blood money in the bank. A man that never had a job is suddenly a millionaire. You are sweet and innocent!

Thanks, Bonnie! The joys of watching PP&M continue via recordings such as this. One is grateful for the techies among us who can summon it up for the rest of us with a few clicks. Much as I love PP&M; still think it sounded better in the Syn-Aud when sung by Cejwinites of all ages.

  56. D.... A....

beautiful and fierce that only PP&M can deliver

  57. C.... R....

    Happy Chanukah!

I love this song--my favorite Chanukah melody.  And PP&M's performance, especially Mary's fervor for her solo in the third verse, consistently brings tears to my eyes!  I'm looking forward to participating when our vocal group at the JCSVV will be performing this at erev Shabbat service on Dec. 19.

  73. K.... S....

I have loved Peter, Paul and Mary ever since my early teens in the Sixties, and this is one of the top songs in my heart. A friend just asked for some more Hanukkah songs, and they're about to get this link.

    M.... M....

I remember being in the temple youth group when this song came out, and the entire organiation played it up - but we responded.

  80. C.... L....

It was such a treat to get this an email tonight.. They were a wonderful.  I listen to their music often.

    C.... L....

Great to share Cheri's comment .  I  think of you often.  Judy

  81. L.... N....

I was fortunate enough to see them in concert three times in a small venue in the 80s and early 90s..  For those who get that they were about more than the music (which was really great) these concerts were an almost religious experience like going to a revival.  Except without the intolerance that religion engenders.

    L.... N....

@Mark Mandel my bad, sorry about that Mark

    L.... N....

    @Spiritual_Music73
It's OK, that happens a lot, especially on line. I'm glad you took the trouble to comment, which gave me the opportunity to clear this up.

    L.... N....

@thnidu There isn't a place on this planet where religion isn't the justification for hatred and horrible brutal acts, and this has always been the case.  It is virtually impossible, (except for the Quakers  and Janns), to point to a religion that hasn't now or in the past both directly and indirectly harmed millions of people.

    L.... N....

@Leonard Niedermayer  Will you please pay attention to what I said? I wrote:
**All that you say is true... except for the statistical generalization "religion breeds more intolerance than anything else".**

I'll make an analogy: I'm sure that like all of us, at some times in your life you have said or done something nasty (and probably regretted it later). Assuming we agree on that, now, should I jump from there to saying that you are a nasty person? Of course not.

And while religion has been used to justify hatred and brutality, it is invalid to jump from that to saying "religion breeds more intolerance than anything else". Really? Religion causes mostly intolerance, and comparatively little that is good? I disagree.

    L.... N....

@Leonard Niedermayer For some reason, Youtube comments threads are notorious as the worst breeding ground for ignorant, intolerant, self-satisfied idiots in the whole Net. And you, sir, are a prime instance.
