Peter, Paul And Mary - Gilgarra Mountain Lyrics

As I was a goin' over Gilgarra Mountain
I spied Colonel Farrell and his money he was countin'
First I drew me pistols, and then I drew me rapier, sayin'
"Stand and deliver for I am your bold deceiver"

[Refrain:]
Mush-a-ring-um duram da
Whack fol the daddy o
Whack fol the daddy o
There's whiskey in the jar.

He counted out his money and it made a pretty penny
I put in me pocket to take home to darlin' Jenny
She sighed and swore she loved me
And never would deceive me
But the devil take the women for they always lie so easy

[Refrain]

I went into me chamber all for to take a slumber
To dream of gold and girls and o'course it was no wonder
Me Jenny took me charges and she filled them up with water
Called on Colonel Farrell to get ready for the slaughter

[Refrain]

Next mornin' early before I rose to travel
A' came a band o' footmen and likewise Colonel Farrell
I goes to draw me pistol for she'd stole away me rapier
But a prisoner I was taken, I couldn't shoot the water

[Refrain]

They put me into jail with the judge all a-writin'
For robbin' Colonel Farrell on Gilgarra Mountain
But they didn't take me fists so I knocked the jailer down
And bid a farewell to this tight-fisted town

[Refrain]

I'd like to find me brother, the one that's in the army
I don't know where he's stationed, in Cork or in Killarney
Together we'd go roamin'o'er the mountains of Kilkenny
And I swear he'd treat me fairer than me darlin' sportin' Jenny

[Refrain]

There's some takes delight in the carriages and rollin'
And some takes delight in the hurley or the bollin'
But I takes delight in the juice of the barley
Courtin' pretty maids in the mornin' oh so early

[Refrain]

Apparently rice crispies help you dump. Keep getting that add lately. Annyways love Peter, Paul, and Mary. RIP Mary Travers. A beautiful woman with a gentle soul and voice of an angel. Dont worry Mary; you're brothers will be with you soon on the streets of glory.

A close personal friend of mine loved this song. Fate has separated us, but I think of her fondly whenever I play this.

    l.... w....

    Never forget her.

  6. C.... R....

I listened to this when I was 17.... It is still a cool version

  7. G.... R....

this verse always gets to me. I haven't seen or talked to my brother in four years - his choice. this verse reminds me of the adventures we used to have. "I'd like to find me brother, the one that's in the army, I don't know where he's stationed, in Cork or in Killarney, Together we'd go roamin'o'er the mountains of Kilkenny."

    G.... R....

I can relate, I haven't talked or seen my brother in 32 years, his choice also. Love this song, a lot of truth in it as is the case with Folk songs. Take care.

  8. T.... H....

When I was 15, the first time I heard this song was in a cover by Metallica. Now, at age 31, i've been listening to this version and find it the most beautiful. The many lives we live in one short lifetime can be so vastly differing. It comforts me to trace the soul's rovings in its winding inspirations.

    T.... H....

same, alot of covers on this one.... its a old Irish pub song!

    T.... H....

Thanks, Tim. I'll check out Metallica because of this remark. Too many old timers don't want to listen to anything recorded after 1980, and write endless comments on how today's music sucks!

  9. G.... T....

Iron hills vagabonds version is much better

    G.... T....

Game Time with Professor John To each his own. They play it too fast and the singer sounds like a chipmunk. They look like a fun bar band though.

    G.... T....

Its always good to relax a little once in a while
