I think the song is saying that she knows her ex has done something wrong, and she's saying he can try and smile it off, and keep it hidden down in his soul, but the mistake will always be part of her, and she can't get rid of it, no matter how hard he tries to.

If you were wondering, this song was written at the time when Christina has a really bad broken heart after losing her boyfriend, so that's what has influenced my interpretation.

I think its about a girl who is with a guy, but she doesn't-- and can't-- love him. The reason why is a secret... maybe because she knows he is cheating on her (hence the "I don't think your lover likes me at all" part). But that could just be the literal interpretation… your idea may be right, too!
