Paycheck, Johnny - Green, Green Grass Of Home Lyrics

The old home town looks the same
As I step down from the train
And there to meet me is my mama and papa
Down the road I look and there runs Mary
Hair of gold and lips like cherries
It's good to touch the green, green grass of home

Yes, they'll all be there to meet me
All creatures smiling sweetly
It's good to touch the green, green grass of home

The old house is still standing
Though the paint is cracked and dry
And there's an old oak tree that I used to play on
Down the lane I'll walk with my sweet Mary
Hair of gold and lips like cherries
It's good to touch the green, green grass of home

Then I awake and look around me
Cold gray walls surround me
And I realize that I was only dreamin'
There's a guard and there's a sad old padre
Arm and arm we'll walk at daybreak
Again I'll touch the green, green grass of home

Yes, they'll all be there to meet me
In the shadow of that old oak tree
As they lay me beneath the green, green grass of home

that IS ONE of the reasons that makes this song so special to me. It does bring out those emotions and what today's country music SERIOUSLY LACKS!!! This tune does what it's supossed to do...Pull at the heart strings!!! LOVE IT! LOVE IT! LOVE IT!

Today (10-29-2013) I was watching my favorite minister/preacher... Joseph Prince and I couldn't believe he mentioned this song and even sang a few of the lyrics but he did it in almost a mocking way especially when he came to the last verse where Johnny sings about being layed under that old oak tree and being came to see THEN. He basically was making a point about how our MINDS control our emotions and that this was a depressing song. You readers get the point. I still love Joseph Prince BUT

When I was sitting here listening to this song this morning I was thinking that it seems that the establishment has always held the demons in Johnny's personal life against him, holding him back from the true recognition that he deserves.

No matter what you think of Johnny, there is no denying that this man could SING! He was an awesome talent and I sure wish they would overlook the demons and respect the pure raw talent that this man had. They have done that for many others so why not Johnny?

  27. p.... ....

I agree, most of today's so called country music is more like bubble gum music.

    p.... ....

There are still a few traditional style artists.

  28. m.... ....
