Paxton, Tom - I'm Changing My Name To Chrysler Lyrics

Oh the price of gold is rising out of sight
And the dollar is in sorry shape tonight.
What the dollar used to get us
Now won't buy a head of lettuce.
No, the economic forecast isn't bright.

But amid the clouds I spot a shining ray.
I can even glimpse a new and better way.
I've demised a plan of action,
Worked it down to the last fraction,
And I'm going into action here today.

[Chorus:]
I am changing my name to Chrysler,
I am going down to Washington, D.C.
I will tell some power broker
What they did for Iacocca
Will be perfectly acceptable to me.
I am changing my name to Chrysler,
I am headed for that great receiving line,
And when they hand a million grand out
I'll be standing with my hand out,
Yes sir, I'll get mine.

When my creditors are screaming for their dough
I'll be glad to tell them all where they can all go.
They won't have to scream and holler,
They'll be paid to the last dollar,
Where the endless streams of money seem to flow.
I'll be glad to tell them what they can do.
It's a matter of a simple form or two.
It's not just remuneration, it's a liberal education!
Ain't you kind of glad that I'm in debt to you?

[Chorus]

Since the first amphibian crawled out of the slime
We've been struggling in an unrelenting climb.
We were hardly up and walking before money started talking,
And it said that failure is an awful crime.
Well, it's been that way a millenium or two,
But now it seems that there's a different point of view:
If you're a corporate titanic and your failure is gigantic,
Down in Congress there's a safety net for you.

[Chorus]

    Wow, that was fantastic.

  2. P.... M....

Tom , this is very awesome.

  3. M.... B....

Everybody and his uncle is in debt
And the bankers and the brokers are upset
    Goldman Sachs's, Merrill Lynch's
    Saw themselves as lead-pipe cinches
Now they've landed in the biggest screw-up yet
Lehman Brothers and Bear Stearns and all their kind
Have turned out to be the blind leading the blind
    They are clearly the nit-wittest
    In survival of the fittest
Let me modestly say what I have in mind

I am changing my name to Fannie Mae
I am changing it to AIG
On this bail-out I am betting
Just a piece of what they're getting
Would be perfectly acceptable to me
I am changing my name to Freddie Mac
I am leaving for that great receiving line
I'll be waiting when they hand out
    Seven hundred million grand out
    That's when I'll get mine

Since the first amphibian crawled out of the slime
We've been struggling in an unrelenting climb
We were hardly up and walking
    Before money started talking
And it said that failure was the only crime
If you really screwed things up, then you were through
Now--surprise!--there is a different point of view
    All that crazy rooty-tootin'
    And that golden parachutin'
Means that someone's making millions--just not you

I am changing my name to Fannie Mae
I am changing it to AIG
On this bail-out I am betting
Just a piece of what they're getting
Would be perfectly acceptable to me
I am changing my name to Freddie Mac
I am leaving for that great receiving line
I'll be waiting when they hand out
    Seven hundred million grand out
    That's when I'll get mine

Are you the man who wrote great anti war song in the 60s?

  6. p.... p....

    Thank God for Tom Paxton!

  7. G.... S....

This was supposed to be a "Short Shelf-life Song," and yet here eight years later it still strikes a chord (and it STINGS).

That's more than a little frightening. Thanks, Mr. Paxton, you're amazing.

  9. m.... c....

Good on you. I'm a long time fan.

  10. C.... ....

He should change his name to " I've Never Been Relevant".

    C.... ....

+creasy bear Despite him having a Grammy Lifetime Achievement?
Or despite being covered by Pete Seeger, Joan Baez, Johnny Cash, Doc Watson, Simon and Garfunkel, Arlo Guthrie, Dolly Parton, Willie Nelson, John Denver, Tiny Tim, Bobby Darin, Bob Dylan and Vera Lynn, among others?

    C.... ....

Creasy, methinks you babble inanities. Crikey

  11. K.... O....

This is bloody grate. A classic use of humor to make a serious point. Paxton has a song Buy a gun for your son which is grate. He has been going for years and grate as ever. Where is the musical movement that existed when Paxton was young.

  12. M.... ....

You are a darn good performer and musician, Tom - this sounds simply brilliant.  :)

  13. M.... S....

Great song, cant get enough of it. Give us more please Tom!

  14. l.... ....

Tom great to see you still singing and truth-telling.

  15. L.... ....

Another crybaby liberal moron.what makes you idiots feel that the Gov should bailout individual citizens who mismanaged their finances? I lived within my means & didn't overspend if you didn't its your problem, not mine. I don't like bailing out big corporations either but at least it allows ppl to keep their jobs, but phony liberals in their excitment to decry capitalism are to blind to see that.

    L.... ....

    >anti capitalistic message
    >"he's a liberal"

    politically illiterate conservative alert!

    L.... ....

Not to mention the fact that according to him, the big companies that messed up get welfare but the people who they screwed get bootstraps.

    L.... ....

How does bailing out corporations help people keep their jobs? The government spent 2 grand per every citizen - but instead of spending it on something useful they gifted it to the bankers. That is welfare, not capitalism.

  16. L.... ....

You do know of course that Fannie Mae & Freddie Mac were both created by liberal icon FDR, and mismanaged by Clinton, Barney Frank & Chris Dood.

    L.... ....

    Lfdjake91 >liberal

    L.... ....

    Thank you.

  17. P.... G....

Even the lefties are getting it. Still waiting for the Obama careblues though. I love Tom Paxton!

  18. D.... ....

    this song right here, perfection

  21. s.... ....

    thankful for you, am I

  22. K.... S....

    Hi, Tom.

I've got a contest to have people do YouTube videos of your songs on Ukulele. Anne Hills thought that you'd get a kick out of it - YouTube won't let me post the Playlist link, but I uploaded the video as a Video Response.

Please let me know what you think.

See you in Schenectady in May!

    -Kurt

  23. P.... A....

Thank you Tom! There's hope... Just keep on livin'.

  24. C.... D....

You're a legend Tom one of the best singers and song writers of all time.

Plagiarism is borrowing someone else's material. Adapting your own material doesn't technically count as plagiarism, unless you have multiple personalities. But even then, it would only be plagiarism in separate parts of your own mind, but not to anyone else.

  26. f.... ....

    fantastic!

  27. i.... ....

This is brilliant - who are the people who voted this down ?

  28. D.... R....

Sadly, as artists and songwriters get old, they lose their creativity.

Looks like Tom didn't get that memo.

  29. g.... ....

This is !!great!!! I have to admit that I had never heard of him before, but he sure hits the mark

  30. S.... ....

What is the chord progression for this tune? Great song by the way.

  31. R.... B....

I'm just waiting for his song about a certain Californian Police Officer and Pepper, That's going to piss Obama off so much.

  32. h.... ....

    (☻Y☻)

  33. s.... ....

I wonder if he ever thought he'd be redoing this song.

  34. P.... C....

My name is paxton searched my name found this (☻)__(☻)

  35. S.... ....

I mean, what the F***, who doesn't like this?

  36. K.... B....

The more things change.... This used to be "I'm Changing My Name To Chrysler."

  37. s.... ....

I am even more over the moon than I was before. you will always be an amazing songwriter.

  38. a.... ....

    Tunefully on the button.

  39. N.... ....

So someone is still paying attention to what's going on? Fantastic!

  40. r.... ....

The song seems to lend itself to updates. I originally remember it as "I Am Changing My Name to Chrysler"

  41. b.... ....

    hey tom amazing voice

  42. d.... ....

got to this after some nostalgia for you were always on my mind-great to see he is still as sharp as ever and so on the case.

  44. L.... G....

    Thanks, Tom! Loving it!

  45. M.... O....

I've known Tom, off and on, for many years, even worked a show or two with him, and we've had our share of good conversations. What you see with him on stage is exactly what you see off stage. He's one of the truly great performers who is actually real, and comfortable enough to show that to anybody willing to see it. A treasure, indeed!

  46. S.... ....

We saw Tom Paxton at The Palace Theatre in Mansfield in the early eighties. He was brilliant, topical and funny then and stil is today.

  47. L.... ....

    VERY GOOD!

  48. M.... M....

GREAT SONG Tom! What an inspiration to watch you sing this, especially from someone like me that loves writing lyrics - THIS IS FABULOUS!!!!!

  49. M.... M....

The corporation's purpose is to expand the secondary mortgage market by securitizing mortgages in the form of mortgage-backed securities (MBS),[3] allowing lenders to reinvest their assets into more lending and in effect increasing the number of lenders in the mortgage market by reducing the reliance on thrifts

he Federal National Mortgage Association (FNMA) (OTCBB: FNMA), commonly known as Fannie Mae, was set up as a stockholder-owned corporation chartered by Congress in 1968 as a government-sponsored enterprise (GSE), but founded in 1938 during the Great Depression. cont...

  51. M.... M....

You still sound great Tom, I enjoyed this song and your performance very much. It's good to hear you still doing topical song like this. Mark

  52. m.... ....

@jazzmanpete Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac (like AIG) are the names of big Banking organisations in the U.S. that when the banking crash happened got bailed out by the U.S. government. A truly ridiculous amount was given to them. So of course Tom said "changing my name to Fannie Mae" means he'll get his bailout too.

  53. C.... ....

Det er dælme nåe mæ nåe nåe å nåe, wåå

  57. g.... ....

Thank you for this, but I find it sad that the same song - albeit lyrically updated - is just as relevant today as it was thirty years ago. Its almost heartbreaking.

    Actually, it IS heartbreaking.

Not only is it a brilliant song, its proving to be timeless.

  58. L.... ....

@AnotherWob Great to hear something conemporary! The Sub - prime dollar market gets me down!

  59. A.... ....

    I'm lovin' this!!!

  78. T.... T....

Brilliant to find Tom Paxton here. Fantastic song.

  79. S.... B....

Loved it! But then like Renee I've loved Tom's music for a very long time. "Ramblin' Boy" was one of the first songs I ever learned, with my Sears and Roebuck $25,.00 guitar in 1965. He's still got the magic!

  80. y.... ....

anyone know what the chords for the song are?

  81. S.... G....

Always a great song. Surely time to record it again and release it as a single. Go for it, Tom.

  82. O.... ....

    Awesome!

  83. i.... s....

cool song and youregood to plsy guitar!
    just like my dad

  84. s.... ....

just an observation from an outsider... but the dems may have started the ball rolling (there will be blame-throwing and buck-passing on that one for decades, I'm sure), but did the republicans do anything in the last 8 years to *stop* it?

    s.... ....

Bush certainly tried to--he went to Congress thirteen times to warn them that Fannie and Freddie were seriously overexposed, and was rebuffed. A week before it all came tumbling down Barney Franks said there wasn't a problem.

  85. n.... ....

Aint that news!! to me? Your voice is heard all over this world Tom, Keep them comming.

  86. C.... C....

    thanks tom!

  87. r.... ....

Bad economy? Think again. That was soured by the Democrats and their Fannie Mae friends who insisted on giving loans to poor people who would never be able to pay back their loans. Republicans have some of the blame, but don't blame the Republicans entirely for this one. The Democrats are mostly to blame, including your Senate pals Barney Frank, Chuck Schumer, Chris Dodd, and Barack Obama (and others) who put America in this problem. They all kissed the ass of Fannie Mae lobbyists for years.

  88. A.... ....

Tom, you are a hero to me. Keep up the good work.

  89. J.... M....

What a great song! I want mine too!

  90. r.... ....

Great to see one of my folksinger heroes has his own YouTube channel. A great song from a great writer and performer.
Thanks to Stewball for sending me here.

  91. R.... ....

Tom Paxton is a force of nature. I'm amazed. He just doesn't stop and he just gets better and better. Wow.

  92. j.... u....

Capitalism isn't working! Time for a real change. The lessons from the 1930s is that we need mass movements to push government into protecting jobs and welfare. Don't wait for Obama...

  93. S.... A....

The more thing change, well you know the rest. Good thing there are people like Tom and Arlo to keep the rest of us from going crazy.
    Thanks.

  94. L.... ....

Arlo's "I'm Changing My Name To Fannie Mae" is good too, but I think this one flows a little better.
