Parton, Dolly - Down From Dover Lyrics
I know this dress I'm wearing doesn't hide the secret I have tried concealing
When he left he promised me that he'd be back by the time it was revealing
The sun behind a cloud just casts the crawling shadow o'er the fields of clover
And time is running out for me I wish that he would hurry down from Dover
And I have seen a spring and summer pass and now the leaves are turning brown
And any time a tiny face will show itself 'cause waiting's almost over
But I won't have a name to give it if he doesn't hurry down from Dover
My folks weren't understanding when they found out they sent me from the home place
My daddy said if folks found out he'd be ashamed to ever show his face
My mamma said I was a fool and she did not believe it when I told her
That everything would be all right 'cause soon he would be coming down from Dover
I loved him more than anything and I could not refuse him when he needed me
He couldn't leave me here like this I know it can't be so it can't be over
He wouldn't make me go through this so long, oh he'll be coming down from Dover
My body aches the time is here it's lonely in this place where I'm lyin'
Our baby has been born but something's wrong it's much too still I hear no cryin'
I guess in some strange way she knew she'd never have a father's arms to hold her
And dying was her way of telling me he wasn't coming down from Dover

Parton, Dolly Down From Dover Comments
This gorgeous, very affecting song should get far more mention than it does. I think it's among her very finest.
0:20 to 2:53 got me like: wow that escalated quickly
LYRICS
I know this dress I'm wearing doesn't hide the secret I've tried concealing
When he left he promised me he'd be back by the time it was revealing
The sun behind a cloud just casts the crawling shadow o'er the fields of clover
And time is running out for me, I wish that he would hurry down from Dover
He's been gone so long, when he left the snow was deep upon the ground
And I have seen a spring and summer pass and now the leaves are turning brown
At any time a tiny face will show itself 'cause waiting's almost over
But I won't have a name to give it if he doesn't hurry down from Dover, from Dover, from Dover
My folks weren't understanding, when they found out they sent me from the home place
My daddy said if folks found out he'd be ashamed to ever show his face
My mamma said I was a fool, she did not believe it when I told her
Momma, everything's gonna be all right 'cause soon he would be coming down from Dover
I loved him more than anything and I could not refuse him when he needed me
He was the only one I'd loved and I just can't believe that he was usin' me
He wouldn't leave me here like this, I know it can't be so, it can't be over
He wouldn't make me go through this alone, he'll be coming down from Dover
My body aches the time is here it's lonely in this place where I'm lying
Our baby has been born, but something's wrong, it's too still, I hear no crying
I guess in some strange way she knew she'd never have a father's arms to hold her
So dying was her way of tellin' me he wasn't coming down from Dover, from Dover, from Dover
Down from Dover
Dolly is an amazing woman and music artist and I love her music and I love this song 😍😍😍😍😍😍💖💖💖💖💖💖💞💞💞💞💞💞💕💕💕💕💕💕
Never heard this song until I watched Dollys Heartstrings on Netflix, beautiful but sad song
what a beautiful dramatic interpretation they have done of this song in the Dollywood Netflix series, HeartStrings. Set in 1967 - standing up for what is right in the face of the social and political tides of the time...all too familiar now...
I had never heard this dolly song once I watched heartstrings I had to listen 😭😭😭
Same here !
Me too lol
Care of RadioLab. An amazing series of interviews. https://www.wnycstudios.org/podcasts/radiolab
I love this beautiful song but the part of song bout baby being still born and its way of saying to mother her husband and baby daddy not coming back gets me everytime goosebumps all over my body I love dolly parton and love her music it takes me toy happy place when I feel down or if I'm sad her sad music gives me the feels I need in that sad moment I love it and when I just wanna good old cry weither its happy or sad or party mode I listen to dolly while listening to clubland and up beat party music you can beat a bit of dolly parton she is amazing I went to see her concert in 2011 in Glasgow and the movie world War z was being made so 2 of my fantasies came true in that one day/night dolly is amazing Queen👑👸 of country 🤠🤠👢👢👠👠👗👗🐴🐴🐎🐎🏇🏇
There was no husband. She was pregnant out of wedlock, which is why it was so controversial at the time it was written and recorded
First time I have heard her version of her own song. I owned the Nancy Sinatra & Lee Hazlewood version, years ago.
I love Dolly she is such a beautiful person inside and out..
My mom and dad played dolly all the time when I was a kid (60’s/70’s) you should listen to her sing with Porter Wagoner ❤️
I know it's 2018 Craig but I can't stop listening to the songs that all the golden greatest singer's ever was here dolly parton patsy cline Tammy wynnett hank Williams Jim Reeves conway twitty red sovine Johnny cash Sydney Devine dean martin Rickey Nelson elvis presley Tom Jones kenny rodgers big al downing these are just a few of my favourite singers all day and night they keep me going I've lost my mum and dad and my husband and my brother and my friends all those country singers songs mean alot to me lest we forget may not be here but never forgotten here's to absent friends and family from roberta
This song is harsh and soft all at once. Like; "the sun behind the clouds, just cast a crawling shadow over the fields of clover," beautiful imagery. Then the last line, "I guess in some strange way she knew she'd never have a father's arms around her, and dying was her way of telling me he wasn't coming down from Dover." Another visual, that can't be beat.
No one does visuals better than Dolly Parton. Have you listened to 'God's Coloring Book'. I have been hooked on Dover ever since I first discover it
Miss Dolly often has me in tears.
So much poetry and literature in a single song
2:53 DAMN!!! That part just broke my heart tears rolling down my face this song is AMAZING especially since it's so old to sing about a topic like that.I love you Dolly your a legend and an Angel😇😙
Been a fan of Dolly all my life and never heard this. Thanks to Jackie Beat for introducing me to this sad but beautiful song
Look into her pre-pop music. from her beginning until just after she left Porter. The mid 60's to the mid 70's.
Same here, never heard of it before Jackie mentioned it. A poignant story song.
dolly is the best forever
Recorded on 9 - 4 - 1969 .
what year did this song come out
1983, I think.
It was on the 1970 album The Fairest of Them All .
Here I go again, I love this beautiful song.
I can't believe it's not played more.
Am I an addict I can't stop playing Dolly music all the time. Anyone else play a lot of Dolly?
I certainly do. Been a Dolly fan since the Porter Wagoner days. Love just about everything she has ever sang, recorded, starred in, written, produced, ect.....
Craig Brown it doesn't matter what year it is iam glad iam not the only one who likes to hear dolly parton if you like these songs keep your music going from roberta
The early Dolly music is the best of her music. The pop stuff is ok, but I don't listen to it. This is the essence of Dolly right here. She writes like no other. I grew up on this music.
@Marvin Thayer I have her LPs. The same ones I listened to since I was 8 years old. Love the music!
@Pixie Fey Same here, my father had an 8 track that i wore out.
The pop, disco, dance and other musical fore way showed her singing prowls but these early songs shows her creativity, story telling and writing skills
always dig these early dolly sides
Dolly is the Godess of Country Music Her so much.
I listened to this very young grew to understand very special song things have really changed
awesome!
beautiful
