This is a really stupid song. A mentally ill daughter who did a very bad thing wants her father to come save her from a mental institution 🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄. So she can go and kill someone else. Or act stupid all over again. Institutions are the ONLY place for people when it gets to the point of repeated incarceration or repeated stays in mental institutions. Some people are BEYOND the point of help!!!! Lock them up and prevent them from killing again 😡. Such a queer song. Dolly is and always will be awesome but this song is just dumb !!!

What are the bad things she did? I guess being neglected by her her husband was all her fault.

I honestly believe that a lot of people misinterpret this song. I don't think Dolly's protagonist is singing to her father, at all -- I think it' her husband ("When he said he loved another, I was crazy with jealousy /That's because I was crazy over him and I couldn't stand to set him free / And I couldn't stand to lose him and I cried and cried for days / And he said that I was crazy but he just put me in here to get me out of his way. . .") -- some women do refer to their husband or boyfriend as "Daddy," although it's probably more common in the blues than in country. But I think that's what Dolly was referring to in this song. Has she ever done any interviews where she talked about it?

David Whiteis There is a podcast called Dolly Parton’s America, the first episode just came out and she discusses this song in it. She refers to both her father and her husband in this song. Daddy I think is her actual father, who she is calling out to for help after her husband puts her away in the mental institution after he is caught cheating on her.
