Parton, Dolly - Boulder To Birmingham Lyrics

I don't want to hear a love song
I got on this airplane just to fly
I know there's life below me
And all that you can show me is the prairie and the sky
I don't want to hear a sad story filled with hearbreak and desire
The last time I felt like this
I was in the wilderness and the canyon was on fire
And I stood on the mountain in the night
And I watched it burn, I watched it burn, I watched it burn

I would rock my soul in the bosom of Abraham
I would hold my life in a saving grace
I would walk all the way from Boulder to Birmingham
If I thought I could see, see your face

Well you really got me this time
And the hardest part is knowing I survive
And I've come to listen to the sounds of trucks
As they moved out on Highway 95
And pretending it's the ocean coming to wash me clear
To wash me clear if you know what I mean

I would rock my soul in the bosom of Abraham
I would hold my life in a saving grace
I would walk all the way from Boulder to Birmingham
If I thought I could see, see your face

I dont know which version of this song I love more: Emmy Lou's painful poignancy, Baez's powerful presentation, or Dolly's raw grief. All great in their right.

  2. m.... ....

    Awful......

  3. L.... G....

she crosses the divide into mawkish territory

  4. D.... K....

There are two great versions of this song, this isn't one of them. The Emmylou Harris version is the best followed by the Hollies version.

    D.... K....

Check out Jessie Buckley's version in YouTube. Its very good.

Some things just never age away from their beauty. Here is one of those treasures. Love you, Dolly. 1.29.2019

    dolly at her best

  11. P.... G....

You can add a lot of great songs up, but you won't get to this one, with Dolly singing it.

  12. u.... ....

Emmylou Harris wrote this for Gram Parsons.

  13. C.... B....

Dolly does it again, such emotion, such rawness another one of Dolly['s cover versions delivered with full on Dolly flavours. Just like on her version of Stairway to Heaven, utter brilliance.

+Craig Brown ~ True that ! and 100% Dolly's Stairway to Heaven just gets to deep in me - especially towards the in her live version on "Live from London 2009" DVD-

  14. t.... w....

    Amazing!

  15. y.... ....

This is full of emotion for me, great version.

  16. T.... M....

Dolly's version is the best. I can't get enough of it.It's just pure and natural

Try EmmyLou Harris original version it. It was her loss of her Musical Partner Gram Parsons that inspired her to write the song. I could easily see Dolly's voice doing this song justice but this version is too far from the songs mood to even be tolerable.

@christian Camlin Have to agree. I'm sure Dolly meant well; however Emmylou's version is both beautiful and exquisitely painful. I wonder if Gram Parsons knew how much she cared about him.

  17. J.... S....

The mark of a truly great song is that it can be covered by numerous artists who put their own emotion into it. Of course, since it's Emmylou's song, her pain, her loss and her story I prefer her version. But to give others credit also, Dolly, The Starland Vocal Band, Abby Owens, and the Hollies do a great job also. I never tire of this moving song.

You should look up the version by Scottish singer Barbara Dickson, it's also excellent.

  18. M.... J....

This is a raw, emotional song that is best performed as such. Unfortunately - like a lot of Nashville albums of that era, this cover is over orchestrated, over backed, and just plain overdone. Dolly is great, but this doesn't do it. I'll still take Emmylou or even The Fray.
Opinions vary - this one's just mine.

Marsh Jones- I have to agree this is just swill compared to EmmyLou's original. You might find the Canadian Trio the Wailin' Jennies version worth hearing. They add harmony but still use the same type of subdued this isn't my first time crying over it approach that EmmyLou's version does. The Joan Baez version is also good but Joan could never sing soft. That said her voice is perfect on the Chorus section but less so on the verse part.

  19. C.... ....

I cannot get enough of this track. sorry Emmy Lou, you are truly great but, for me , this is the best version.

I think this one of the most poignant and best versions of this Emmylou Classic - I have the vinyl and its wonderful to find it again, thanks, Jancis Harvey
