Parsons, Gram - Streets Of Baltimore Lyrics

Well I sold the farm to take my woman where she used to be
We left our kin and all our friends back there in Tennessee
And I bought those one way tickets she had often begged me for
And they took us to the streets of Baltimore
Well her heart was filled with gladness when she saw those city lights
She said the prettiest place on earth was Baltimore at night
Well a man feels proud to give his woman what she's longing for
And I kinda liked the streets of Baltimore

Then I got myself a factory job, I ran an old machine
And I bought a little cottage in a neighborhood serene
And every night when I'd come home with every muscle sore
She'd drag me through the streets of Baltimore
Well I did my best to bring her back to what she used to be
Then I soon learned she loved those bright lights more than she loved me
Now I'm a going back on that same train that brought me here before
While my baby walks the streets of Baltimore
While my baby walks the streets of Baltimore

Parsons, Gram Streets Of Baltimore Comments
  1. K.... G....

Sure makes you wonder what kind of people the 38 thumbs downs are.

  2. R.... P....

One country’s greatest songs. This boy checked out way to soon.

  3. E.... W....

Baltimore sucks but this song doesn't.

  4. M.... D....

For another take on this tune, check Charly Pride' s version (live at panther hall...1969 ) with the great Lloyd Green on steel.

  6. D.... B....

Room #8 and there is a shrine out in the desert for Gram Parsons. Sad and too bad on his passing. You can research Grams life out here and there is a video too. He was laying the ground work for the modern country sound we have today.

  7. M.... R....

Gram left this world 46 years ago today. What a special artist!

  8. 8.... ....

Best version of a great song

  9. V.... ....

Sadly, those lights aren't shining in Baltimore anymore. And there are no factory jobs...

  10. c.... ....

I married a Baltimore girl. It’s all real.

  11. D.... S....

Timeless ! Like so much of the music that sprung from Gram ( even where he wasn't the writer of the song ! )

  12. B.... V....

For every man who lost a woman he loved.

  13. J.... C....

She loved those bright lights, more than she loved me

  14. L.... P....

Love Gram....had a pair of pants almost exactly..if not the same around 74?

  15. g.... ....

I am from Baltimore, born 1952, what a cool city , a beautiful place to grow up.
This song is a hoot ! Baltimore was such an innocent place when this song was written.
I guess to some country folks , Baltimore and it's "Factory's" would seem kind of Evil.
To us kids it was exciting and Funky, Soul Music on the radio with The Rolling Stones.

  16. D.... R....

Bobby bare is a close second to gram on streets of baltimore

  17. T.... F....

    Can't trust women.

  18. b.... ....

    This version is pretty good.

    https://youtu.be/Bfxl0-sgJE0

  19. S.... t....

I know grams voice wasn't the most technically perfect but the feeling and emotion he had who cares if he misses a note he was one of the best

    S.... t....

What a load of contradictions. You like something, fine. Does not mean you have to over sell it.

    S.... t....

well you dont have to be a dick

    S.... t....

@Robert Byrd I was was just making a statement about my feelings and you had to go and make a thing about it nice job you prick

    S.... t....

@Robert Byrdlike really what you say doesn't even make sense

    S.... t....

you dont even have it in you to defend yourself you coward.

  20. M.... D....

    Great song

  21. A.... V....

Baltimore is a tough town bro

    A.... V....

Even back then, The Block was indeed rough, with crime and places such as the Gayety Burlesque.

  22. R.... D....

I wondered if Mike pender serchers heard of him

  23. A.... P....

Aye Alabama in Country music Hall of fame and not Gram Parsons

    Bravo

  24. B.... R....

I love the Bobby Bare version, but this is very good as well.

    B.... R....

Both are great. I like that he sings Bare's talking part, lends a unique twist.

  25. H.... C....

    trying so hard, luff it💟

  26. S.... G....

Best line: "She said the prettiest place on earth was Baltimore at night"

    S.... G....

It is certainly ironic. As anyone who has ever visited even once can attest, Baltimore will never win any municipal beauty contest - at any time of day or night.

    S.... G....

    @chuckschilling

This song is 50 years old... Wasn't the slum it is now back then.

    S.... G....

@WESTEL Audio I'm rather aware of that. I grew up there and lived there till I was thirty. I am keenly aware of Baltimore's past, present and, sadly, likely future.

  27. C.... A....

Man this dude can't sing for crap.

  28. M.... M....

Man, James Burton, Al Perkins, and Glenn D. Hardin tear this version up. Nice one, Gram.

  29. G.... O....

What a wonderful voice..I can listen to his songs everytime!
    Awesome!

  30. P.... R....

    Awesome voice!

  31. M.... G....

never move to another town for a woman or man, it fails.

  32. C.... G....

He had a short life but Gram was a wonderful genius!

  33. T.... P....

such a sad song sung like a happy one !

  34. N.... W....

    Excellent

  35. L.... W....

If I'm being honest, Parsons is no Bobby Bare and he's damn sure no Charlie Pride, both having a far superior version of this song. Is this even music?

    L.... W....

    Larry Warnock love this man.

  36. F.... H....

    I love GP

    F.... H....

    moi aussi !

  37. L.... ....

    He was the best.

  38. S.... A....

great song but what a shithole Baltimore is now

    S.... A....

@Mark Conner North Carolina isn't one of the poorest states in the U.S. Construction rates are enormously skyrocketing. Obviously they have money to build, money = building, crazy thought, I know, now go sit down you fucking moron and let the big boys talk about politics.

    S.... A....

Huh. Bought property in Baltimore cheap, sold it a few years later and it paid off all my student loans, my wedding, and a downpayment on my current home. Call it a shithole all you want, it bounced back from problems of white flight and de-industrialization two decades ago.

    S.... A....

    @emily h No, it's about prostitution.

    S.... A....

@PercivalGull1 yeah, let them democrats in and the place turns to shit;.).-)))))))))

    S.... A....

I love Baltimore, but it’s always been a rough town. If you read Del McCoury’s old accounts of coming up in the Baltimore bluegrass scene, he talks about it being a crazy place even then. Bullets flying, people getting killed in the bars while they’re playing. Baltimore’s just the same as it’s always been.

  39. g.... ....

Written by Tompall Glaser and Harlan Howard in 1966.

  40. B.... M....

Love You Gram..See you on the dark end of the street brother x

  41. S.... H....

This was before Crack Cocaine, and all that it brought ...see the NBC Drama "Homicide, Life on the Streets"... B'more was #1 in that

    S.... H....

I agree that's probably why he left and went home I would .

    S.... H....

@SKEETER AMOS So the song is truer than ever and that's why every time I hear or try to sing it it makes me cry.

    S.... H....

Ironically this song reflects the exodus of hillbillies to Baltimore, a crowd so miserable the snob H.L. Mencken compared them to filthy animals. Well, at least there were jobs, and no drugs besides alcohol.

  42. A.... D....

    great artist! RIP Gram!!!

  43. J.... C....

This is the song that sold me on Gram Parsons!!!!! Please Youtube Jeff Coulson Thanks Much Love God Bless and dont forget to Subscribe

  44. L.... L....

Bobby Bare has a good version too.
balto isn't as good for me as this song is but
I prefer the country though to any big ol dirty over populated city.
I never understood why folks riot in their hometown knowing they're making it look like shit afterwards and usually get nothing accomplished except lowering their home value.
    but who am i?
riot on n tear up some more shit!
foreign terrorists ain't got notha on us here, let's bomb that shit ourself n let the whole place go up in smoke . hopefully wipe out all the loser assholes in the process but I doubt it..

  45. J.... C....

    good song good artest

    J.... C....

    +Jimmy Camilleri artist

    J.... C....

  46. C.... P....

I just had to listen, once again, to Gram's amazing voice!  I like his voice...so wonderful!  God bless, Charlie (Bo. C.)

  47. P.... F....

All I ask is that anyone who reads this message--watch Robert Altman's movie Nashville

    P.... F....

Not a huge fan of his films, Nashville, being one of the few exceptions.

  48. W.... S....

Great song .Who are the 10 people who dislike this .Gram Parsons vocals were awesome

  49. Z.... B....

When I got home from work with every muscle soreShe drug me through the streets of Baltimore - classic!

  50. S.... K....

lst comment was from wrench bender20002002

  51. S.... K....

left Baltimore in 89 and been been back 1 time since haven't lost anything there ans sure ain't gonna find nothing there

  52. S.... R....

This was recorded back in 1973, when my hometown, Baltimore, was a much nicer place to live in than it is now in 2015.

    S.... R....

    +D'Ascoyne LOL!!

    S.... R....

    Lies are troof these daze.

    S.... R....

And written in 1966, when Baltimore was in even better shape than it would be in 1973.

    S.... R....

Where do you live now, Steve Renehan?

    S.... R....

    @michael snider Or 2019

  53. D.... F....

if you threaten to riot in Baltimore they will pay you 6.4 million bucks.

  54. o.... ....

"she said the prettiest place on the earth is night in baltimore"....except sliders bar and grill after the trashing...long live freddie gray!

  55. D.... O....

    Bodymore

  56. t.... ....

    Then.Baltimore is a jungle now.

    t.... ....

@tippimail1 Baltimore has surely changed quite a bit since the song was written by Tompall Glaser and Harlan Howard in 1966!!! Even then it evoked the feeling of the earlier 20th century...

+tippimail1 I still like Baltimore -- Little Italy, Fells Point, Mount Vernon, Inner Harbor

    t.... ....

    Mount Vernon? Wrong state

    t.... ....

@Albert White, IV Mount Vernon is a neighborhood in Baltimore.

    t.... ....

My mistake. Thanks for the geography lesson.

  57. D.... C....

One of the saddest songs ever written

  58. C.... P....

I sure enjoyed this!  Gram Parsons had an awesome voice for singing.  Great vocal talent!  Thanks for sharing.  God bless, Brother Charles

  59. S.... ....

    GOT DAT WMD

  60. C.... ....

The sublime Gram Parsons… I Love him.

  61. P.... ....

I love this version, but have a listen to the Little Willies' version.

  62. L.... S....

No disrespect to Gram Parsons, but Charley Pride's version is far superior on every level.

  63. P.... ....

Gram Parson's version of this song is the best by far.

    P.... ....

I prefer Bobby Bare's version, but Gram did a great job for sure.

    P.... ....

@john doe Des Kelly and the Capitol Showband do a great version

    P.... ....

    bobby bare's original is a bone-thin classic

  64. B.... W....

TP and Glaser bros is the best in my humble opine but i do enjoy Gram's version as well as Bobby Bare but Tp's voice is classic all time country.

    B.... W....

Tompall Glaser and Harlan Howard wrote the song.

    B.... W....

    C o way tittid

    B.... W....

    @lana chamberlain
Have no idea what that means can you help?

    B.... W....

Conway Twitty is that what you are saying?

  65. h.... ....

I listened to Tompall/Glaser version and...  Well... Gram's version is just so much more updated and less hokey of a rendition. Plus Gram had Elvis Presley's band playing on it? You can't ask for better than having James Burton, Glen D. Hardin and the boys backing you up? And I didn't even mention Miss EmmyLou Harris yet?
Sorry.. this has been and will always be the definitive version for me and all the musicians I know and played with over the past 40 years. Give Tompall the credit for writing it, but Gram made it fly.

    h.... ....

Glaser had an extra verse in there though. I wish Gram had sung it.

    h.... ....

And you didn't mention Bobby Bare,I like this version,Bobby's version is really good.

    h.... ....

totally agree; Bobby Bare's version is great and so is the original by The Glasers, but Gram sounds more real

  66. l.... d....

OK version of this classic. If you want to hear the song sung to perfection, check out Tompall and The Glaser Brothers version right here on YouTube. Tompall wrote the words and music to the entire song with the exception of the music to the chorus, which was written by Harlan Howard. Absolutely NO one did it better than the Glaser Brothers, featuring the amazing voice of Tompall Glaser. Listen for yourself:)

  67. S.... C....

    I like it!

  68. S.... N....

my parents dance to this. it's beautiful. RIP GRAM america's son

  69. w.... ....

  71. B.... W....

Country Music never even knew what they had with this Florida kid via Harvard U.
He would have been huge had he lived, no doubt as big as George Jones and Johnny Cash.

  72. E.... ....

Music ain't in the hair, it's in the heart. Damn, he had heart.

  73. D.... ....

    Sad but true, brother :(

  74. J.... G....

  75. b.... ....

Incredible music, played with great passion! No need for the silly little jobwsorths!

  76. B.... W....

It is a great line, but he didn't write it....Harlan Howard...

  77. m.... ....

    yep, Baltimore.

  78. B.... M....

Mark in those days the country music community would have nothing to do with long hair musicians. It has been in the last 10 to 20 years that current CM artists have begun to oppenly acknowledge Grams influence on them. I and many others believe that had he not placed himself on DEATH ROAD he would be recognizes as on of CMs biggest stars. There is a petition/movement in place right now to get him into the CM Hall of fame, lets join it.

    B.... M....

Only the outlaws recognized him as one of their own.

  79. H.... C....

that man should not have died so young, its so much better than current music. His music is from the heart and not commercial

  80. J.... G....

Me not the grammar police. :)

  81. l.... ....

there ain't none better....and yes i'm aware of my incorrect grammar thank you....

  82. s.... ....

    Great stuff RIP

  83. S.... W....

Dude I think you most likely have schizophrenia

  84. h.... ....

By 1971 (or whenever GP was recorded) it was obviously an ironic tune. As such it was featured in the great series 'The Wire'...very first episode, I believe...

  85. R.... C....

Gram was a troubled genius, read "20,000 Roads. His bandmates in highschool were Kent LaVoie (Lobo) and Jim Stafford.

  86. R.... C....

Gram Parsons was a troubled genius. Read "20,000" Roads. His bandmates in highschool were Kent LaVoie (Lobo) and Jim Stafford both became pretty well known in their own right. What it must have been like to go to a local dance and have those guys playing.

  87. F.... ....

Written by Tompall Glaser and Harlan Howard...

  88. P.... T....

"the prettiest place on earth"? Gram's old lady had a low bar for beauty, huh?

    P.... T....

Baltimore actually has some great architecture, even if the city is now down and out.

  89. b.... ....

"the prettiest place on earth was Baltimore at night," and, "I soon learned she loved those bright lights more than she loved me," two of the greatest lines in C&W music! (IMHO!)
