Masterpiece...

Those vocals near the end, for me, are undeniably heart throbbing. You can feel the pain of the vocalist so vividly that the emotion is carried with you even after the song. It’s a perfect balance of that pained growl, and soft, and gentle voice that seems hopeless. I love this song so much.

This album is so good it's beyond unreal. The melodic and emotional value is something I've never heard before or since really. It's by far their best I think. Daniel gildenlow is a bit of a genius. And also a quiet original concept. Prematurity and relationships from childhood, up through youth till early adulthood and the emotions the main charector goes through. Their band name is also fitting to an album like this

I think that PoS has always been a band that you love or hate, and if you get them and you love them, you can come back to a song from a long time ago and it still evokes strong, emotional responses. This is why I really love this band, and they occupy a lot of real estate in my mind. There were many years that all their records followed me everywhere I went.

I’m guessing so

I'm going to a prog-rock festival this summer, mainly because it will be my first live experience of Gazpacho, and secondly for Anathema (but I've seen them live several times already). So, I was checking out the other bands that were on the poster and I came to Pain of Salvation. Never heard of them before, so I went on youtube. Found "Meaningless" and thought: "Decent song. I will enjoy them that evening".
However, after looking for more of their music on youtube, I came across some older work like this gem (and also songs from the album "Be") and I was blown away! This is heart wrenching music, with just the amount of pathos that I like. And, god, those guys are all virtuoso on their instruments (including his voice).
I have immediately ordered three of their albums. If these turn out to be everything I expect them to be, the rest of the catalogue will surely follow.
Amazing that I never heard of these guys before. Why aren't they on the radio?!?

I once wrote this in a review about this album, I hope you enjoy it:

In the album it ("This Heart of Mine") describes the love the protagonist feels towards the Hungarian girl, the trust formed between them, the promises that were promised. At this stage of the album, the listener is not yet aware of the source of the rift in the relationship, so it looks like a sincere and genuine emotion between two people in love.
Precisely for this reason, the next song seems a little odd, almost detached from reality, because it is the exact opposite of it. It's a song of pain, a song of despair, of grief, of desire for independence. the repetition of the words Let me go, let me fly, let me run, let me bleed, let me die makes the despair the hero felt clear. We still don't know what the source of this pain is, but we can feel it. This is the memory of the breaking point. The point in the relationship where the protagonist just wants to go, escape, not verbally or physically, but spiritually. He wants to be free from a lost love, the promises he had promised her, the world he created with her.
The song repeats the same riff over and over. It starts quietly at first, expressing some kind of quiet, even sleepy desperation, which changes the second time to grief, then anger, then panic, and finally back to despair. The real beauty in "Undertow" is that in the middle of it the melody from the second half of "This Heart of Mine" enters, as if to remind us what the source of all this pain is. Because all this time, even when the distortion goes crazy in the background, the drums roll and Daniel screames his throat to death, the memory of that perfect love is still there, in his mind, and even in moments of despair, grief and anger, it's still there, and that's exactly what the protagonist is trying to break free of.

Doug Fine very accurate for the most part. This song, to me, portrays the necessary pain and struggle of human development. pain and sadness are equally as important as hapiness and contentment.
