Opeth - Heir Apparent Lyrics
Cold days
Old ways
Told lies
No more
Endless despair within its wake
His touch soiling what used to be clean
His gaze burning on the edge of our dreams
Cold days
Cold days
And again he rides in
It's September and he covets the gullible
Skeletal wish
A thousand lies cast from the throne of secrecy
Hear him spewing forth a meaning to miserables lies
See the twisted hand of doubt seal the affair
The insect trust
Believer
our body a vehicle to him just the same
Pearls before swine they are nothing but blind
Submit to nothing and swallow my spit of scorn
Invisible king
Dying
Procession of woe struck down by sorrow
A burden so great weighs heavy on old and withered beliefs
The swift solution crumbles beneath the mock notes of a masterpiece
Death in his eyes
Waiting
Spiralling judgement provoked in the rains
Futile test drowned in the levee of deception
His futile test drowned in the levee of deception
In the year of his sovereign
Rid us of your judgement
Heir apparent

Opeth Heir Apparent Comments
I have been listening to these guys for something like 7 years, and still I have thought that this song is just chaotic until maybe one year ago. Now top 3 easily
Truly world class, and timeless.
Can't believe I'm only listening to that now. Truly inspiring songwriting and storytelling!
Arguably the last real Opeth song which before they ventured off into the absolute unknown...I commend them for sticking to their artistic vision but god do I miss hearing new Opeth songs...I dont hate the new material but I dont love it either and that's the problem it isnt strong enough either way to polarise me It has no fucking identity...I think they should have changed the name of the band before they released Heritage...but now it's too late to go back, if they released a new album like Ghost Reveries tomorrow it might sound like them but it would be laboured and lacking in that magic.
It started off that they didn't want to release a metal album then they got hung up on the jazz fusion stuff and now I dont think they could write death metal again even if they wanted to.
That ending is just so beautiful!!!
God, 7:20 hits like a goddamn train...
Leper Affinity Part II
I could listen to that outro all fucking day
The ending really reminds me of Hades Rising ending ending from mikaels old band BloodBath
kurwa tryton <3
How many Opeth songs feature only growled vocals, I wonder? This one, April Ethereal, I think as well. Any others?
Chris Allcock “April Ethereal” has clean singing. Pretty sure “In the Mist She Was Standing” is all growls, though.
@Liam Atkinson Yeah for some reason the clean segment of April Ethereal skips my mind. Their Circle of the Tyrants cover is growls only too, though.
This, In Mist She Was Standing and Blackwater Park
Lorenzo Barichello Yes, that’s true, I forgot about BWP.
I so love the deconstruction at 7:03 and then back to such a beautiful strong melody...just really great writing and great musicianship....
this is just filthy....in the best way of course....
"Watershed" był ostatnim albumem Opethu, który miał sens i był... opethowy. Wszystko, co było potem (włącznie z tą ostatnią parodią) jest po prostu słabe i nudne.
Gdzie jest kuźwa growl? Gdzie te zwroty akcji? Opeth idzie ścieżką Wilsona: od mega-świetnych kompozycji do disco. Szkoda.
esto esta a otro level!!!!!!
Horrible growling. Let's get real
Ok, give me a good example of what you consider better growling than Akerfeltd's. I'll give you one...anything Mikael did between 1995 to 2007.
@Gray Bull I should have said all growling is annoying and horrible to listen to.
@Dave Defrancesco Oh i understand, its not for everyones taste. I thought the same as you but then i got into death metal and other extreme subgenres of metal lol.
They could have easily kept expanding this sound in new directions. Just listen to how much really good atmospheric black metal is out there. Opeth could easily have been a part of that. Mikael should have kept a bit of the young metaller inside him
Ya never what you'd get from an Opeth song. And that's what'll always set them apart for me flipping amazing
Heir Apparent
Opeth
Long days
Slow waste
Sew lies
Sow hate
So many years to clean the slate
Endless despair within its wake
His touch soiling what used to be clean
His gaze burning on the edge of our dreams
No more
Cold pace
Slow days (?)
And again he rides in
It's September and he covets the gullible
Skeletal wish, hunter
A thousand lies
Cast from the throne of secrecy
Hear him spewing forth a meaning to miserables lies
See the twisted hand of doubt seal the affair
The insect trust, believer
Your body a vehicle to
Pearls before swine they are nothing but blind
Submit to nothing and swallow my spit of scorn
Invisible king, dying
Procession of woe, struck down by sorrow
A burden so great
Weighs…
Good bands don't need drop tuning to be heavy.
This song is gold, Bad Bunny is trash.
are those flutes during the clean guitar passages? keyboards? guitars??...
Mellotron flutes - also used on Strawberry fields by Beatles. (late, I know)..
That outro could put the devil at ease. Love it
I am not into the cookie monster screaming but, the music is wonderful !! Maybe that is why I love " Heart in Hand " so much!!
It sucks
@Gray Bull it's totaly linear, the song doesn't breathe at all, there ain't any memorable riff
@Denki Kaminari lol

All Opeth album covers... it looks like the photos are taken in Silent hill.
Doommmmm
Possibly the heaviest band I've heard in standard tuning. The drumming on this track(like so many others) is fucking immense !
SO MANY YEARS TO CLEAN THE PLATES
Adrian Storeide 🤣
Opeth is proof that if you down tune your guitar, you're not heavy enough.
I wrote my PhD thesis listening to this album over and over again.
My husband has been instructed that, if I am on my deathbed and unable to communicate, he is to play a predetermined soundtrack that includes this song. I want to hear this during my final moments of life so that my soul finds its escape through divine resonance. The dissonance is energetically identical to my brainwaves.
Just discovered this And daaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaamn what did i Miss!
that very end sound is very creepy and you don't notice but they are playing that behind other riffs earlier in the song the F# dim bridge riff at 1:47 ...they kinda fade it in...it's gnarly...you're like "why does this part sound so wicked??"
the drums are just ridiculous...
7:20 The best outtro
awesome! reminds me of the song ghost of perdition because of the "mood" or atmosphere the song has
riffs of doom!!!! so excellent!!!
One of the only Opeth songs where Akerfeldt doesn't sing a soft passage. All screams, growls and roars. This track reminds me so much of Morningrise...
this reminds me of gojira
Mikeal is the only one god I believe in , HAIL OPETH !!!
I remember this sent shivers down my spine the first time i heard it!
5:43 As someone one loves Opeth's more mellow slower songs more than their heavier death metal parts, I fucking love that part.
"A burden so great weighs heavy on old and withered beliefs
The swift solution crumbles
Beneath the mock notes of a masterpiece
Death in his eyes, waiting
Spiraling judgment, provoked in the rains"
This song is about fucking.
If anyone's interested, I have a tutorial on how to play the solo in this song with TABS: https://youtu.be/HzApCFvydBE
I love 6:55 where it breaks and starts to deconstruct,...then so beautifully into the outro...my favorite thing right now personally...have almost learned it all on guitar...no vocals...but it's just so well built...masterpiece...
This song is about a woman's ass, and her tits too.
Is anybody willing to make an hour long loop video for the outro bit that goes from 7.21 onward?
I demand this too mate
check the vid of cusp of eternity into this song live ...the way they put the two songs together is amazing...one 15 minute song of total crushing....so good....
Soooo fucking heavy Jesus Christ
It's already 10 years that I'm listening to this. Never got tired of this song, of this album or even of everything ever done by Opeth.
Her apartment?
This song is addictive! I didn't like it at first, now I can't stop listening.
I'll say it now...
For as much of a dark and ghostly atmosphere Opeth shot for with "Ghost Reveries", this honestly feels much darker and creepier. Like a subtle bout of mental horror that sneaks under your skin (I refer you to when things really open up after the acoustic interlude; absolutely frightening.)
Watershed is miles ahead of GR.
A BURDEN SO GREAT WEIGHTS HEAVY ON OLD AND WITHERED BELIEFS
heir apparent is media reinforced to be apparent but everyone knows the media constantly lies and so the heir in right is the right heir no matter what the public apparently thinks.
this is in E standard
The melody of this song seems that are telling us a story, something similar to King Diamond albums (Abigail, Them or The Eye)
That OUTRO!!!!!
What you fell when listening to?
Heir Apparent, Blackwater Park and The Grand Cojuration must be my three favorite metal songs ever. And all three from the same band. Way to go Opeth!
I can't believe that this track is on the standard tuning...
I love how heavy this song is. This song features some of Mikael's best growling for sure.
Opeth is the reencarnated of Dolores Barrios
Yeaaaa
remind me so much of AiC
How so?
A burden so great
Weighs heavy on old and withered beliefs
The swift solution crumbles
Beneath the mock notes of a masterpiece.
DeLucena SDMF Beautiful
My favorite part
Death in his eyes, waiting
Spiraling judgement, provoked in the rains
The transition from Coil to Heir Apparent is nothing short of magical.
@8:17 great bass fill.
@5:58 shit gets real lol all the way until the outro
Man that outro is the best outro ever!! I find it perfect and beautiful the whole structures of this song is perfect all sets different moods and personality
If there is any song that makes the hair on my arms stand up, it's definitely this song by Opeth. The opening intro completely blows your socks off, so if anyone asks what does Opeth's music sound like? Just play this to them and they'll know what it is after one listen. Pure badass song.
"I start sucking what used to be a clit" 2:00
This song is a masterclass in how to write a heavy song
He was definitely playing Diablo when composing this song.
One of the best opeth songs and damm there's a strong competition...
7:20 TURN THAT SHIT UP!!!!
Dreams Drums Brutal....Progressive Classic Metal!@mazing!
4:40 would fit well in Tristram
And 3:38 would fit well in Lut Gholein.
This is an example of how brutality can be well constructed! Truly spectacular!
i always find my self conflicted as to which of the Albums is the best, this is definitely up there.. one of the most diverse while still being insanely Heavy.
Best outro i've ever heard
the outro.....is just amazing
a masterpiece of modern metalry
The sickest first three minutes in the history of metal
That intro riff
the opening riff is so good
My ears just got blessed..
By Satan, of course
Holy tritones batman
6 string, standard tuning, and they churn out this... Mikael is the MacGyver of heavy riffs.
@StonerHub Dim AF
The king of diminished and open chords
@Rodrigoooous i believe it's the organ and bass together that make this big low end
deminybs no, Syn uses both Drop D (Nightmare, This Means War etc.) and Standard (Buried Alive, So Far Away etc).
The power of a good dissonant chord!!!
Heir apparent or wreath 🤔 which is opeths heaviest?
heir apparent
Darkness is so comfortable and this song is a perfect companion at 3 am while writing with a single candle lit and tripping hard on lsd. Great artists.
This is a great alarm
You have 80 seconds to get up or there will be a hellhole in your room
Cabeza de Huevo 1:20 sorry, I had too
😂😂😂
Actually you have 0 seconds
doesn't it sound like shit on mobile tho? Ill try it in any case :D
2:00 - "I started sucking what used to be a clit"
Vadim Vishnevskiy lol
I just discovered this band and all I can say is fuck yeahhhhhhhh
Morgan Freeman Welcome to Opeth my friend. I must say, I envy you for being your first time listening to the band.
Enjoy your trip.
The entire song is great, that outro tho, that one is a masterpiece
I just love how they hit you with this beast right after Coil.
