Oh Hellos, The - Pale White Horse Lyrics

Down they fell like the children of Eden
Down they fell like the tower
As the land relinquished her ghost

Heed the sirens, take shelter, my lover
Flee the fire that devours
But the sight held me fixed
Like a bayonet against my throat

Neither plague or famine tempered my courage
Nor did raids make me cower
But his translucent skin
Made me shiver deep within my bones

It was a pale white horse
With a crooked smile
And I knew it was my time

It was the raging storm
Of a foreign war
And a face I'd seen before

Oh Hellos, The Pale White Horse Comments
  1. B.... R....

For some reason when I listen to this song I think about a frozen woodland that starts out peaceful enough, but then you end up at a barren frozen wasteland when at nightfall you end up stuck in the middle of an extreme snowstorm and hypothermia gets the best of you in the end.

This is one of those songs that makes me feel one of two things each time I listen:
    1. Nostalgic and homesick for a time and place that never was and never will be
    2. The feeling that there is a story I must tell, and I can see the characters, I intimately know them and their story, and yet they are still strangers who I know nothing of

  9. T.... ....

I sing "Where is your rider?" between the verses..

Here is what I see in the lyrics:

I think its about a young woman, either a healer or simply an onlooker looking at a battlefield the morning after the battle, examining what happened.

Down they fell like the children of Eden
Down they fell like the tower
(talks about the fallen warriors and dead soliders on the field, comparing them to Adam and Eve and the tower of babylon)

As the land relinquished her ghost
(it was in the morning, the ghost of the land is the morning mist)

Heed the sirens, take shelter, my lover
    Flee the fire that devours
(A warning she spoke before the battle to whoever went into battle, she warned them not to fight. To flee and step down.)

But the sight held me fixed
Like a bayonet against my throat
(But she also cant look away from the sight before her.)

Neither plague or famine tempered my courage
Nor did raids make me cower
(She, or the land she lives in, has had many troubling times before but nothing has touched her spirit so far)

    But his translucent skin
Made me shiver deep within my bones
(But he (who?) is the first to finaly touch her soul. He could be the one mentioned in the next line or a dead man she finds on the field, sine translucent skin could refer to the pale skin of a corpse)

It was a pale white horse
    With a crooked smile
And I knew it was my time
(Here, she adresses who she sees on the field: as others have pointed out before, the white or pale horse could either point to the antichrist or the rider of death, so maybe shee ees death on the battlefield, in the ense tht she finally realizes the scale of death that happened)

    It was the raging storm
    Of a foreign war
And a face I'd seen before
(yeah... idk, its just my interpretation)

  12. O.... ....

Where has this band been my whole life?

  13. P.... ....

Honestly, listening to this song, and 'Caesar' while reading the ending of Steel Ball Run is both the saddest but best felling ever

  14. C.... T....

Reminds me of Game of Thrones

  15. D.... ....

I feel like this song tells a tale of a girl who knew someone who lost their way and betrayed her. She sees them during a raid on her home and everyone is telling her to seek shelter, but as she sees her friend attacking her home, she's stuck in a trance of feeling betrayed. In the song, "Where is Your Rider" it seems like she's confronting her friend who has betrayed her. That's just what the songs means to me.

  16. C.... R....

And I looked, and behold, a pale horse! And its rider’s name was Death, and Hades followed him. And they were given authority over a fourth of the earth, to kill with sword and with famine and with pestilence and by wild beasts of the earth.
    Revelations 6:8

  17. R.... J....

This song is incredible. I listened to it weeks ago and added it to my music playlist absently without really thinking about it. It sounded good and it was The Oh Hellos, so of course I threw it in the playlist and didn't think about it much afterwards
I regret doing that now. Upon relistening to this, and paying attention to the lyrics, I've found a sorrowful beauty rarely captured in song. The titular Pale White Horse of the song, representative, at least to me, of death, gives me chills every time its line arrives. I imagine myself in the position of the narrator, of dying (I envision myself on the battlefield, though all is still) and suddenly before me is this beast of death, the harbinger of the end of all things. It smiles at me, crooked and strange, and I know I am dead. The song swells, becoming more and more intense, and I imagine the war which left the narrator dying raging elsewhere, men dying and the sky darkening, all hope for humanity being lost as the Pale White Horse comes to consume all. The song reaches its peak, and cuts off abruptly, the end finally arrived at, my death finally here.

  18. w.... ....

What I think of is a setting in an open field, scorched ground and bodies scattered with fire and war in the background. Then out of the smoke the female warrior sees the horse, just standing there and staring at her. She backs up a little because it's eerie and unsettling but the horse starts walking to her, so she runs and trips. When she turns around the horse is over her and starting to rear up and neighs, he slams down on her skull as the song abrubtly stops. Idk...like she can fight and win as much as she can but there is no escaping this horse that means something so much more, but we don't know what it is.

    w.... ....

Maybe the horse is death or something that she hates most about herself? Like self doubt or something like that.

  19. M.... M....

    O MAN CHILLS DAMN

  20. T.... P....

I’m not even religious at all whatsoever, but this song somehow makes me fear for my non-existent soul. Like, I just listened to it and now I can feel my heart pounding. I think its the “whoahhh oh ohhhh” parts that sound like the voices of the dead, and the other noises that might be bones rattling. Also the image of a horse with a crooked smile. That sounds like a cursed image. And the way the song gets louder and louder and then suddenly stops.

    T.... P....

    The Pip woah...

"Neither plague or famine tempered my courage
Nor did raids make me cower
    But his translucent skin
Made me shiver deep within my bones"
The four horsemen of the apocalypse.
Pestilence rode a white horse. Famine rode a black horse. War rode a red horse. Death is described as riding an ashen horse which most people translate into a pale horse.

    F.... S....

@Fierce Star it is from a book by Terry Pratchett called Good Omens.

    F.... S....

@TheAlhouk57 I finished the show for that a little while ago. Very entertaining

    F.... S....

@Joy C.E. The show is ok but doesn't really do the book justice

    F.... S....

@TheAlhouk57 Yeah, I was thinking about reading it

  23. T.... P....

The way it keeps getting louder really freaks me out.

  24. S.... a....

As opposed to my tanned, white horse

  25. B.... H....

this gives me nostalgia for a time and place i didn't exist in-

    B.... H....

This is how the whole album is for me

    B.... H....

    @Panic! Trash same

  26. M.... D....

This song just reminds me of the game Farcry5 perfectly!

  27. b.... f....

The horse is often used to symbolize freedom, and when I listen to this song I can't help but get a feel of a girl running from home and finding a new, risky, love in a dangerous stranger. A man with white hair and a charming, crooked smile. Her first taste of true freedom being found within this man. However, his love also being her demise... It's dumb lol, but just a thought.

    b.... f....

Captain lol it’s just my goofy interpretation, but I can’t help but adore the far more ominous reality of the song’s meaning too :)

    b.... f....

@bailey falene I still think it could be a great tragedy, ending with the stranger realising what he has done and the knowledge breaking him.

    b.... f....

Oliver Schöneck hell yeah, I love that.

    b.... f....

That makes sense because the album is about abusive relations ships.

    b.... f....

Or it could just be a kelpie

  28. A.... R....

I feel like of floating in a very space.
    Amazing, defintely soul music

  29. O.... 2....

This reminds me of the seven deadly sins

  30. E.... C....

This song is incredible. Something about it makes me cry. It makes me think of life and death, the pale white horse taking away the souls of the dying. But at the same time it’s beautiful and freeing.

  31. D.... B....

    This song is god

  32. S.... ....

Omg? I already love 2019 already giving me this beaitiful songs from The Oh Hellos? Gosh where you guys from, love your music so much!

  33. m.... ....

Christianity is bullshit and stole a lot form north mythology also this song is lovely

    m.... ....

    @Josiah Butterworth o_o wot

    m.... ....

@moxie facts are facts. Most of the Bible and Tanakh (the Jewish Bible) are actually just verifiable recorded history. And Judaism itself is one of the oldest religions we have record of, especially of the ones still practiced today. If you'd like to talk more about this I'd be happy to.

    m.... ....

@Josiah Butterworth Ō-Ō still hate religion but your smart n intresting

    m.... ....

@Josiah Butterworth That's funny. The great flood has so many earlier prior iterations from other religions and cultures it's not even funnier, the earliest of which is from the Sumerians. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ziusudra#Sumerian_flood_myth

Then there's Christmas, not an original holiday for the day of anything to do with christ, but an adopted holiday for integrating with pagans: "Christmas does not appear on the lists of festivals given by the early Christian writers Irenaeus and Tertullian.[10] Origen and Arnobius both fault the pagans for celebrating birthdays, which suggests that Christmas was not celebrated in their time.[52] Arnobius wrote after AD 297. The Chronography of 354 records that a Christmas celebration took place in Rome in 336.[53]"
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christmas

The countless mentions of creatures within the bible are undoubtedly not original either, but rather just ignorant descriptions of real life creatures, with hyperbole.

Even the creator itself was not an original concept to christianity, but rather can be followed back to the polytheism, which, eventually lead people to worshiping one god over other gods as more powerful, or more beneficial, until that one god was the only god, birthing monotheism. https://www.religioustolerance.org/ashby01.htm

    m.... ....

@Josiah Butterworth damn man you just decimated that guys embarrassing edgy takes sky high with that religious knowledge, must be satisfying being so right (and I mean this genuinly) lmao
