Oh Hellos, The - Constellations Lyrics
I can feel it on my tongue
Brick and mortar as thick as scripture
Drawing lines in the sand and laying borders as tall as towers
I babble on until my voice is gone
Colored indigo, inscribed with my name, and lined with cedar
But the words fall flat like cymbals crashing
Like molars gnashing
'Cause like constellations a million years away
Every good intention, every good intention
Is interpolation, a line we drew in the array
Looking for the faces, looking for the shapes in the silence
All that's left for me to climb to the heavens is
But I hear the rumble
As the tectonic plates start to shake
And I feel my blood pounding like the beat of a drum
'Cause like constellations a million years away
Every good intention, every good intention
Is interpolation, a line we drew in the array
Clinging to the faces, clinging to the shapes in the silence
Like constellations imploding in the night
Everything is turning, everything is turning
And the shapes that you drew may change beneath a different light
And everything you thought you knew will fall apart, but you'll be all right

Oh Hellos, The Constellations Comments
oh this cute....
My taste of music brought me here. And my *R E C O M M E N D A T I O N S*
It was quite pleasant to listen to this as I collected pretty orange pebbles in my forest to surround a great white stone I unearthed. Thank you.
I love this whole song, but my favorite lines have got to be:
"Like constellations a million years away, every good intention is interpolation" and "This hill I'll die on is about ninety meters of bricks, colored indigo and inscribed with my name"
I don't know why or how this popped up in my recommended but I'm not complaining, this went in my awesome music playlist within like 30 seconds.
This is the piece of me that I was missing
After I listened to this the raccoon that I've been chasing through my dreams , he finally took my hand and we ran
Good for you!
This sends shivers down my spine. The good kind
my heart hurts
Listening to this type of music again makes me feel safe and a false sense of happiness
does this song feel biblical like to anyone?
just wondering
i don't see it :S
Wow, this great. This was in my recomended.
This is the essence of my soul.
I discovered this song on accident, but it was the best accident I've done. You all sound lovely, I adore this song and will be checking out more music from you.
Isn’t this about the building of the Tower of Babel
wonder what this will sound like on a piano
1:30 is definitely my favorite stanza
Wow that's a LOT of Biblical imagery; good stuff.
This was posted on my birthday
:)
Idk why but this reminds me of Rick and Morty
my girlfriend told me this song reminds her of me and ive had it on repeat for weeks, its so addicting
Adored it
heard the first 5 seconds and it was already liked
i do not regret accidentally clicking... hello new favorite band
Listened to this as I was driving passed a field of cows. Seemed fitting.
I think I just need to listen to everything now... But I'm supposed to "wake up" in like 15 minutes
Does anyone know what Notos means?
Notos is the name of the Greek god of the south wind.
The Oh Hellos, Sleeping At Last, Sea Wolf, Radical Face and Little Chief all have great traveling music
Edit: this got a bunch of likes, thank you! Cosmo Sheldrake, Mumford and Sons, ect. are great additions!
Mumford and sons too!

Not _exactly_ the same vibe, but Crane Wives.
and birdtalker
I was on a plane recently, and I put this on loop and listened to it for the entire 4 hour flight. I’m still not tired of it.
Perfection.
This song is what stargazing sounds like
King of Flowers omg yes
It's true
The Oh Hellos are very good at making these songs!!! Like this if u like the songs of the Oh Hellos!!!!
The oh hello’s music is so strange to me because it’s so good, that it can enter places and experiences in my head. It’s arguably the most perfect music to attach to memories that it makes them all the more impactful.
honestly, im the "always-does-weird-shit-because-of-people-saying-no-balls" and always-chooses-dare-in-ToD" kind of person. i listen to punk rock, emotions dont phase me, resident badass if i do say so myself. but then i get home, and theres no one to hear me scream these lyrics. No one to hear me cry over the beauty of the melody and baseline of this song. And no one to see this kind of music bring out the real me under this thick skin of mine. Even after smashing bottles against rocks or chugging 2 quarts of gatorade then throwing up, theres still a little girl who always just loved to dance like no one was watching. Thank you genuinely for bringing her back to me. I love you guys. You're amazing. Never stop creating. ❤❤
this is super inspiring man. keep being you.
you guys deserve the world
This song came over to my house and fucked my sister
Hey, does anyone know the chords to this song? They're not on ultimate guitar which surprises me, I thought I'd ask.
There something absolutely enchanting about this song and the album artwork
I just discovered this band today. And oh my goodness I am blown away!!
are any of y’all here from the klance fic star-crossed???? because i’m about to combust
This reminds me of hades town the musical
This song reminded me of another musical! Dear Evan Hansen to be particular
same!! i love hadestown.
this song needs WAY more love
That babble on/ Babel on/Babylon play on words is just *chef’s kiss* magnificent
I think it's a reference to the Tower of Babel but I like your connection too.
@Nicolas Gray it's all three bro
this makes me want to lay in a field under a clear blue sky next to someone i love
Remember, kids! Nazis are bad! Just ask Wolfenstein!
I ADORE this song! My childhood pretty much took place in what but a brick tower on a hill, it was a little fort my friends and I built. So I relate on an oddly personal level to this song
As soon as this started to play my brain just? Went? "Who's your friend who likes to play? BING BONG BING BONG!"
BING BONG BING BONG
*Mr. Stark I don't feel so good.*
this song but instead of "brick and mortar" its "rick and morty" (i have not, and never will watch the show)
Your icon alarms me. I approve.
O.O yeah... I need to get this song on my phone... I need this on one of my playlist! <3
I feel like i can enter this song, with headphones and closed eyes. Like a safe place.
The Oh Hellos are the one and only band who can lead my mind away from fear. Fear of death and nothingness, the thoughts that keep me up at night. I know it's not good to entirely suppress them, but when I listen to The Oh Hellos, I feel like I'm floating. And for a short moment, everything is gone.
And for that moment, that is good.
@Animaker amen.
@nomi inquies Thank you for commenting that. I allowed myself to do that after reading your comment and remembered that magic is all around us. I wrapped myself in a blanket of this song.
Animaker
Except pale white horse. That throws the fear of death right in your face.
OMG RIGHT!?
Is this band still producing music?? I've recently gotten into them and every song is beautiful
Ikr, I really hope they do though
They're wrapping up a tour right now, so hopefully they'll make a new album afterwards?
@Aaron Marrs Join me in prayers, my brothers and sisters, may the Oh Hellos never stop sharing their holy talent with us commoners.
@Animaker not even religious but im praying hard as fuck
@Child Friendly Child I Swear Same here.
i’ve been listening to this band for years now, and i’ve never felt the growing-old feeling i normally get. thank you Oh Hellos for making my life a bit better.
wow just wow, this song is so pretty
I really like this song. I relate to it. Kinda. At least my interpretation of it. I think it's about, like, the way that language and messages change over time and the original meaning ascribed to it changes as well with different interpretations of it. But also that you kind of cling to the original meaning of it, to not have it changed because it's important to you. But can't stop everything changes and different interpretations are made and the stars move and words and symbols change meaning and your message is lost, and is not yours anymore.
I myself am afraid of that. That the thing that I wanted to say is lost to time. And maybe I have kinda contributed to that process with this comment. I put another interpretation out there and with every interpretation it like, kinda changes the message, at least for one person.
It's a thing that is going to happen. And even more with works of art, because they can be interpreted so much already. And even in the creation of art the message you want to send can change, without even the artist knowing. The first meaning is lost and forgotten. But another replaces it.
I've got to accept this process, even though I'm scared of it. I guess I'm afraid that I and my messages will get lost and I will be forgotten. You know, the second death that people talk about. I'm scared of that.
Things are going to change but you want to be remembered. But I'm probably not going to be remembered, at least not for that long and not by many. I hope that I'm remembered, but with as many people who are already forgotten I don't have that much of a statistical chance.
I have to accept that. I'm working on it, but I'm scared.
Well, I do have a plan to like, a one message preserved. I don't know what it's going to be yet, but I have a plan that maybe someone will see this message by me and the second death will happen much later.
Ok, so here is my plan. I will chisel my message signed by me into a cave in a non-earthquake prone area. And the rock of the cave has to be something that doesn't erode fast. So no sandstone caves. And like, a cave where there aren't stalagmites and stuff, because that could also block it.
But yeah, even if it doesn't get much traffic some curious soul will find it some day maybe. They'll wonder: 'Oh, who was this person?' and I will be thought of and remembered at least a bit. And be alive in that person's thoughts and memories.
Yeah. This got long. But yeah, I'm processing my fear here. It's a step on the way to accept that I will be forgotten some day.
Anyway. I had another thought about this song. I has at least a theme of the tower of Babel. There's like lines about reaching the heavens. About towers and of course the word Babel in there. Then there is like, scripture borders? Like how the different languages created borders between the people.
The like faces and shapes that they're looking for could be like angels and god, but I'm less certain about that specifically. And other songs also reference stuff in the bible, like smearing of oil on David and other Kings. So yeah. I think that's likely.
Again really nice song. Not only does is sound so great, it's also deep and made me examine my fears, so that they're less abstract and more concrete so that I can deal with them better.
Hm. Just looked up interpolation. It means basically like what I fear. That messages get different meanings than they intend to by force.
But yeah, the other meanings of the word interpolation are also really scary. Like, someone inserting other things into a dialogue :O
Or even worse! MATHEMATICS!
@Josefina Meyer Woah that's a really detailed interpretation. I was looking at the lyrics and it seems like you might be right, like the narrator/singer is someone who is trying to "babel" on and on and get their message heard, but they realize that everything is turning, and that "shapes that you drew may change beneath a different light". The ending of the song seems to be them realizing and acknowledging this, when they say that despite their fear they're going to be all right.
Thanks for making me hear the song in a different way! :)
Sleeping at last and the oh hellos need to make a mashup
My people omg
mY PEOPLE
God, OP your mind
Henlo, I know many people relate these Oh Hello Songs to Christianity, but as a failed Christian [Tried to believe, but couldn't] and beginner Wiccan, I feel like these songs teach me that it's okay to be different from the rest of the world, to branch away, even if it's to another place not known as holy. As a Wiccan, I do believe in God, yes, but I also believe in spiritualism, the stars, and self infliction. Being Wiccan is what makes me feel whole, like being Christian is to some people. Have a good day, to all religious and non-religious people, may your Gods and Goddesses bless you on your path to righteousness.
Yeah, I also interpret this as Wiccan! Something about it has a very ancient Celtic feel to me :)
@- Starsoul Studios - Thank you. I haven't heard of Wiccan before, but who really knows all of the names of all the many religions and denominations
-__(• - •)__-
@Speed I thought it was about the building of the tower of babel
@noah moore Interesting. I never would have thought of that.
@Speed yeah like the different languages created to split them apart
I love The Oh Hellos :)
I have so many animatic ideas for this band's songs
Cora Carter- i love animatics!!! Let me know when u post it?
@Faith Swartz okay!
i hope you get them made some day! even though it has been 6 months

THIS BAND
This is a song that I truly wish I could like multiple times. Thank you for the beautiful music.
I don't know what we did to deserve this band. They are too good for us, but we desperately need more like them.
We don't need them, we WANT them
You think very little of yourself
well I mean, there once was of monsters and men but I'm getting worried they might have abandoned folk for the bIg wOrLD oF PoP. so you know, treasure the oh hellos for they might get famous some day and leave us
It's not quite the same style but it makes you feel the same way. Try out the dodos especially the song horny hippies
music like this is really what keeps the world turnin huh?
kuro....giri?
Oh shit same
Hello Kurogiri, got tired of Shigaraki?
You guys are fantastic,honestly.
A fanfiction brought me here B)
Same here! Was it perhaps Star-crossed, a voltron theme fanfic?
It’s funny how the name is that of a Greek wind god, yet the aesthetic seems more akin to the night sky.
Don’t get me wrong, I have absolutely no problem with it, I love it.
But that's so cute since it's actually called constellations and you heard that, despite thinking it was about the greek god of wind.
@nomi inquies They mean the name of the album, Notos. it's the Greek god of the south wind.
@Aurugentum didn't sound like they were referring to the whole album to me
@nomi inquies "aesthetic seems akin to the night sky" they were talking about the cover for the whole album, not just the specific song.
@Aurugentum perhaps
I love when greatness shines through 😉
Still one of the best
this song is so magical and it makes my heart feel whole
this makes me cry sometimes
Michael Scarboro I'm crying right now oh boy
Me too 😢
Crying rn. Makes me feel so nostalgic
God, do I ever love this song!!! It's beautiful, and so interesting! I love how the guitar motif sounds like twinkling stars. Beyond that, how it works on two metaphorical levels: it starts out with the tower of Babel, relating the attempt to reach the divine and the resulting chaos, to how attempts to create meaning and connect with each other go awry. And then, it turns to the heavens themselves, constellations, shapes which only exist in our view, and uses that to refer to how we create meaning out of nothing. Seems awfully existential for The Oh Hellos, but I love it! That line about "Looking for the faces, looking for the shapes in the silence..." is especially haunting, especially with how quiet it goes there. Oh, and when it hits "But I hear the rumble," and that cascading violin sound comes in, I love how that gives the impression of falling, like bricks falling from a crumbling tower. I love stuff like that!
Hakajin Hi! A few months ago the two of us got in an Oh Hellos conversation in these comments. Do you happen to know when their next album will come out? It must be close. I thought it was going to be released last Friday because of how it would mirror Notos and Eurus.
Yeah, I remember! I don't, but I wish I did; I've been waiting and waiting for the next single to drop. I assume that the EP will be out two weeks after that, because of how the other two came out. They did just finish touring, so... I was hoping they'd play something from Boreas when I went to see them a couple of weeks ago, but alas, they did not.
So, you’re saying that instrumental part is kind of like developing a feeling that nothing makes sense, and everything starts to apart, but then beginning to make sense again from the rubble?
This is the best song off the new album imo. It's pure magic!
My fav of the new record, love this
I can feel it on my tongue
Brick and mortar as thick as scripture
Drawing lines in the sand and laying borders as tall as towers
I babel on until my voice is gone
This hill I'll die on is about 90 meters of bricks
Colored indigo, inscribed with my name, and lined with cedar
But the words fall flat like cymbals crashing
Like molars gnashing
'Cause like constellations a million years away
Every good intention, every good intention
Is interpolation, a line we drew in the array
Looking for the faces, looking for the shapes in the silence
All that's left for me to climb to the heavens is
The chasm of the night and a matter of time
But I hear the rumble
As the tectonic plates start to shake
And I feel my blood pounding like the beat of a drum
'Cause like constellations a million years away
Every good intention, every good intention
Is interpolation, a line we drew in the array
Clinging to the faces, clinging to the shapes in the silence
Like constellations imploding in the night
Everything is turning, everything is turning
And the shapes that you drew may change beneath a different light
And everything you thought you knew will fall apart, but you'll be all right
@Ilse Bailey babble*
I see you in nearly every song from this band! A fan of them as well, I see?
Thank you for the lyrics though, please.
@C.o.R (Lex) believe its refering to the tower of babel
oh dang, that last last stanza hits hard
@Awkward Artists I love them so much!! And I love singing and having the lyrics in front of me so I just copy and paste them from google
Phenomenal. Thank you guys so much.
Another classic Oh Hello jam.
Best track of the record. Good
