Oh Hellos, The - Caesar Lyrics

Hear on the wind how the pendulum swings
Feel how the winter succumbs to the spring
Over the palisade morning will break
Rise up to meet it, oh sleeper awake

Gather the soldiers, the heir to enfold
Crown him and give him a scepter to hold
Sound every horn as the columns extend
Up to the hill where the king will ascend

Look to the sky where the sign will be shown
Heaven and earth and the king on his throne
Look to the sky where the sign will be shown

I would love The Oh Hellos to sing me to sleep.
    That would be lovely.
Can you come to my house and sing to me as I drift into sleep The Oh Hellos?

Trend of this comments section Is as follows:
    Jesus,
    Julius,
    And JoJo.

This song is magic, like an unstoppable force, pushing forward. All resistance smothered beneath its weight, no agility, no haste, no compromise. Just grassy hills, taking on a darker colour as the shadow of something deep and long forgotten graces the blades. A legion, a woman, a man, a beast. Who knows? There's not a thing you can do to stop it

  9. E.... A....

Came here from "Soldier, Poet, King" and this has honestly become one of my favorite songs on the album. Granted, I have yet to listen to the full thing (and the rest of the albums, of course), but I still feel like this is going to be at the top of my list for a while ;)

    Elven Artist same

  10. C.... ....

I absolutely love this song... It takes me away to a whole other world

  11. S.... R....

Just me or are all these songs subtly about the Bible and Christianity

    S.... R....

They might be at That, certainly a nice change from the usual fair.

    S.... R....

It's not subtle, the entire album has Christian overtones and themes.

  12. P.... ....

Listening to this song, and 'Pale white horse' while reading Steel Ball Run is honestly the saddest but best feeling ever

  13. .... i....

I swear, The Oh Hellos is the only band that can make music that actually gives me chills

  14. P.... S....

What a mood song, like bruh this is putting out such viking vibes

  15. A.... t....

HOW did I listen to these guys for a month straight exclusively and not know this song exists

  16. G.... P....

This song is about the Crucifixion of Christ. It's not about any Roman leader or Roman history.

    G.... P....

Oh okay. Do they do alot of Christian themed music, because that counts two out of the three songs of theirs I've heard.

    G.... P....

Cian McCabe I mean they are Christian and they put a lot of Christian influence in their songs and albums, like this one which is inspired by The Screwtape Letters, which is also Christian inspired. I wouldn’t say they’re a full out Christian band, but they come really close, and a huge chunk of their songs show that.

    G.... P....

@Music Princess saying The Oh Hellos is a solely Christian band is like saying Switchfoot is a solely Christian band. They both have a wider, mass appeal with Christian undertones throughout their discography.

It is easy to find the undertones in Dear Wormwood (which takes its name from a C.S. Lewis book, an author they absolutely love) and Through the Dark Valley (which has a song called The Lament if Eustace Scrubb, a nod to a character from Lewis' Narnia series), but is more subtle in their first EP (The Oh Hellos, where "Hello My Old Heart" comes from) and their two more recent ones.

    G.... P....

@Golden Panther Exactly why I said I wouldn't call them a full-out Christian band if that makes sense. It influences their music and they make a lot of references to it, but I wouldn't say it's solely that. So yeah basically what you said.

    G.... P....

Golden Panther I think interpretation is up to the audience

  17. N.... G....

    These songs are seriously underrated

  18. P.... o....

Most people in these comments seem to be interpreting the title to be actual Caesar, and somehow only like one person seems to recognize the overt christian interpretation. The first stanza uses many metaphors used elsewhere in the album and Christianity in general ("Morning will break" "Winter succumbs to spring" "sleeper awake"). The second being a metaphoric retelling of the crucifixion, in which the soldiers enfold Jesus (to escort/mock), crown him with thorns, and give him a staff to be his scepter. The hill is, of course, the hill of Golgotha. The last stanza is simply revelatory, showing Jesus seated on his throne. I mean, this whole album is so explicitly christian that almost every single one of it's songs is about the victory of Christ, and it references a christian book in the title.
Sorry for spelling it out, I was just so absolutely boggled how many people interpreted it as literally referring to Caesar.

    P.... o....

    Someone else! Thank you

    P.... o....

Oh the album is so much better with this insight

    P.... o....

I mean, fair enough you can see it that way. There is many interpretations however. I think i heard this album was based of someone breaking free from an abusive relationship and recovering, so that would be a personal point of view to look at it. Then there is your religious one, as well as a historical one which actually connects to Julius Caesar, or more likely, Augustus Octavianus, his heir. After Caesars death they buried him and he hunted down the ones responsible. He saw himself as son of a god, Apollo. Also, the hills Rome was built on. The Palatin for example. If you want, you could connect the sign to the Sidus Iulium, a comet that passed after Caesars death and which Augustus saw as a confirmation for his own deification and legitimation to become the next roman dictator.

  19. A.... D....

Did anyone notice this speaks of ceasar's death, and the crowning of Octavian?

    A.... D....

Artibus De Antonio I think it’s about Jesus but that does fit some

  20. T.... A....

I know the song is called Caesar, but this also reminds me of the story of Romulus and Remus. In their story, the brothers cannot decide who should be king. To end their disagreement, they climb the Aventine and Palatine hills respectively and both wait for a sign from the gods that one or the other should be king. The lines "Up to the hill where the king will ascend" and "Look to the sky where the sign will be shown" specifically remind me of this. Its strange how certain details like that repeated themselves in Roman history!!

    T.... A....

I think its truly pointing towards Christ.

    T.... A....

Caesar can mean King. That's was a Romen kings had the name.

    T.... A....

@ECHO 99I think it could mean a lot of things. it doesn't just have to point to one thing, as most of their songs focus around multiple religions and mythologies.

  21. J.... B....

    Obligatory Jojoke...
    *cough*

    CAAAAAAAAAEEEEEEESSSAAAAR

    J.... B....

    Oh shit I'm crying

    J.... B....

Shit, don't hit me with that bloody stream business when I'm not ready for it.

    J.... B....

    SHIZAAAAAAAA

  22. G.... U....

There is a slight touch of Ludovico Einaudi's 'Primavera' in this song. The former is a beautiful composition and if anything, both pieces are delightful to hear.

  23. C.... B....

I feel like all these songs are somehow tied together

    C.... B....

Apareantly it's been revealed that all songs in the album of "Dear Wormwood" are about leaving an abusive situation. So yeah.

    C.... B....

@German Furman The whole Dear Wormwood album is heavily influenced by C.S Lewis' The Screwtape Letters. It is about a demon named Wormwood who tries to ensure that the devil gets a man's soul. So in the context of the Screwtape Letters the abusive situation is the relationship between a man and his demons, which is clear in the song "Dear Wormwood". In "Exeunt" it sounds more like a normal abusive relationship between people. It has a very Christian tragectory. The songs all follow the story of someone who recognises his demons and dies in victory after Christ overcomes sin and death. But there is also alot of space for other interpretations in the music.

  24. B.... B....

I'm surprised by how little comments there are for a song that was posted 4 years back

    B.... B....

    I agree.

  25. D.... 5....

    Au Michael much?

  26. S.... A....

oh my I completely get this song! It's suppose to be something for Julius Caesar cause he was assinated by Brutus, cassius, and others?

    S.... A....

it's actually about emperor constantine, over whom it was prophecied that a sign would be shown in the sky, and it was the cross.

    S.... A....

@Elise Wixtrom Ah, that would make sense. Thank you for the clarification.

    S.... A....

    @Jonathon Dwan no problem!

    S.... A....

@Elise Wixtrom preeeeety sure it's about the crucifixion. Like, the lyrics fit for Constantine, but viewing the album as a whole, it would make more sense for it to be about Jesus.

    S.... A....

@The MOCingbird oh absolutely, but a lot of these songs have multiple meanings and i can see that one being an alternative

  27. O.... ....

This song is beautiful. Makes me think deeply of traveling and just life in general. Very emotional and just gorgeous

  28. C.... S....

my friend sent me this song. told me it fits me besides my name being Caesar. i have to say. love this song!!!

  29. b.... ....

How does this not have millions of views?! Chills, this is mind blowing. The amount of talent present in this song just boggles the fuck out of my mind.
