Nitty Gritty Dirt Band - Dry Town Lyrics
Well, the road was hot and flat as a ruler
Good hundred miles between me and Missoula
That vinyl top weren't gettin' no cooler
So I stopped at a Quickie Sack
Well, I figure I'd need about a six of Miller
So I asked the girl if the beer was in the back
She said,
It's a dry town, no beer, no liquor
For miles around I'd give a nickel
For a sip or two to wash me down
Out of this dry town
So I turned right around, no hesitatin'
Cursed the laws ruining the nation
But she wouldn't go into gear
He said it sounds like it's your transmission
You need Bob, but he's gone fishing
On his day off he gets a long way from here
'Cause it's a dry town no beer no liquor
For miles around I'd give a nickel
For a sip or two to wash me down
Out of this dry town
Well, back home friends you can get a dose of
Something strong from the local grocer
So I walked down 'til I come closer
To a place called Happy John's
He said I keep some for colds and fevers
Down underneath's where I usually leave 'er
But just last night I felt a cold coming on
Now it's a dry town no beer no liquor
For miles around I'd give a nickel
For a sip or two to wash me down
Out of this dry town
It's a dry town no beer no liquor
For miles around I'd give a nickel
For a sip or two to wash me down
Out of this dry town
I need a sip or two
To wash me down
Out of this dry town

Nitty Gritty Dirt Band Dry Town Comments
Great singer, great band,
BAD SONG!!
Why the f should little jean feel pain, confusion, and questioning
UNLESS WE POISONED HER WITH OUR TOXIC SHAME CAUSE HER PARENTS WEREN’T MARRIED??
Marriage was made for man and religion. It’s a social construct!!
First, the song is from 1983 when people were still expected to get married if they were having a child. Second, you need to look up the history of marriage if you think it was made for man and religion.
Alberta Rose again the religious toxic shame placed upon the child that does not understand what marriage means and only sees the “marriage” as a fun party.
Alberta Rose I say again. Why should the child feel any shame, guilt, fear, or anything cause her parents didn’t go through the man made ceremony unless we poisoned the child’s mind with our religious shame?
@Elani Aniyvwia Again, you need to look up what marriage is about if you think it has to do with religion.
Alberta Rose than why do we have it?
How the fuck can you honestly say you don't like this song??!!!
This could have been the song at my mom and step dads wedding for me, if had been out at that time, too bad it was a few years late. Makes me cry though thinking of the memories of that day being in their wedding and dancing to my favorite band all night.
Why would little jean have tears or whatever cause her parents weren’t married, unless we poisoned her mind with the toxic shame cause her parents didn’t go through the man made ceremony of marriage?
Elani Aniyvwia Leftists always have to screw up everything. Can't we just enjoy this song?
milleke223 so your for toxic shame and this world getting worse? Let’s poision the kids with our toxic religious shame so we don’t progress as humanity and stay in the dark ages!!! You can’t be serious!!!!
And who says I gotta be left? Maybe I’m a realist? They made the child feel ashamed cause her partners didn’t do the social construct of marriage!! If they hadn’t the child wouldn’t care either way!! Cause children don’t have shame!!
milleke223 it’s that same toxic shame that produces serial killers!!
this song makes me cry....of joy....
It doesn’t get much better than this! Nuff said!
John didn't get the recognition that he deserved
All too often we harm the children by making something out of nothing because of our religious ideals!!
Why should little jean have any tears or confusion because her parents weren’t married? Unless we put the toxic shame upon her?
So her parents didn’t go through the social construct of marriage? So what? Why do we poision little jean with the shame and guilt cause of that?!?
Think about this. Why would a small child have tears and confusion around and about her parents not going through a man made ceremony of marriage unless we harmed the child by making her feel that way? All little jean knows about the marriage in the song is it’s a party where her family is gathered LIKE HER BIRTHDAY PARTIES so yeah she’s going to dance and all that.
Why would little jean have any tears and confusion about her parents not being married unless we poisoned her with our shame and guilt about it?? Unless we made her feel that way!!
The perfect song to show how we all too often enforce and damage children by our religious standards of how they should feel!! Why would little jean have any confusion or anything cause her mommy and daddy didn’t go through the social construct of marriage?? All she knows is it’s a fun party and her mom and dad are there with her. Just like her birthday parties.
Hey little jean.. you should feel guilt, confusion, shame, and all those bad feelings not because you do but because we say you should because your parents didn’t go through the man made social construct of marriage!!!
So feel bad child!! Take this toxic shame we force on you cause your parents are breaking a man made religious law!!!
love this song so much. it was for a little girl
Love this song!
this song holds a special place in my heart i was 4 yrs old when my parents decided to get married. even though it was in front of the judge this is the first song i heard when they said they where married.
@Elani Aniyvwia they're still married. have been for 40 yrs
Love this song
you dont know shit ahout big foot at all but you sing good
Great tune
Hey little jean your parents didn’t do the man made ceremony that’s just a social construct!! So you should feel confusion, shame, guilt, and other bad feelings although you have no reason to feel that way but because we say.
I’m just trying to figure out why would any child have any confusion or anything about her or his parents and them not being married or not. Unless we traumatize the child and make it any kind of issue to the child to worry about?? Why would little jean have any kind of confusion cause mommy and daddy weren’t married?? They love the child!! That’s what matters!!
Seriously why would little jean have any issue with her parents being “married” or not unless we traumatized her by making an issue out of it? And put shame and guilt about it on a poor innocent child??
Because little ones just know what's right.
How many kids go through their lives without their parents going through the “marriage ceremony” and live completely normal lives? Why should little Jean have any confusion or anything unless we traumatize her by making the issue out of her parents not being “married” by the stupid ceremony??
Why would the little girl have any issues if her parents were or not married unless WE made it any issue?? If we don’t make it the issue the child won’t have any cause all children care about is someone loves them!! Because her mom and dad didn’t do the made for man ceremony we made it the issue!!
Oh ya...Lots are listening!...Awesome!

This performance by the less singer is everything an entertainer should be- his talent and heart are just amazing! I watch it over and over and smile
The only thing the new clowns in trashville rap about is how country they are because they drive a truck and go fishing.

Still greatest hit song today. One greatest Band.
The Cheyenne Saloon at Church Street Station Orlando, Florida
sad story that ones getting married first before children could end but control for adults evades them and the children pay !!!!
I photographed a wedding a few weeks ago. Everytime I took a photo of their little girl this song ran through my head
got a picture for You Nov 6 1976 when my 2b daughter spent the wedding night dancing with my Dad and Grandfather. Just a 3 Year old sharing the best day of Dad's life,
My brothers band played at our wedding, our daughter was two at the time. Married for 30 years and I can still see those little girls of mine dancing their hearts out. God Blessed us. :)
This song reminds me of my sisters wedding and her youngest was dancing in is white socks that they turned so black and had to be thrown out
those would have been great for a shadowbox
WHAT A SONG. REALLY MAKES YA THINK!!!
Rob Burdick it makes me think...
What other toxic shame are we inducing on our children cause her parents didn’t go through the social construct of marriage? Why does little jean feel fear, shame, guilt, or anything cause her parents didn’t do some ceremony she doesn’t understand unless we induced the poisonous toxic shame upon her!!
How many onion cutting ninjas are there?
they get into formation, the moment this song is searched for on youtube
ive seen this song acted out in real life, warms my heart, this world is mostly rotten but not all
mostly rotten but it takes one small thing to change it :)

at my sisters wedding her youngest was dancing so much his white socks turned black we had to throw em out.. I think of that day every time I hear this song..

excellent. two hours of hits.
I wish they would come my way. I've known them for almost 40 yrs. We met when I was in college. Just love them all to death !
❤️❤️❤️NGDB their 🎶 never grows old
So 10 people didn't like it ? you should listen with your heart!
dr. krug I did and I don’t like it cause it’s about inducing shame and guilt on an innocent child cause her parents weren’t married.
@Elani Aniyvwia I guess you would have aborted her?
@Elani Aniyvwia That's not what it's about at all! It's about the REMOVAL of shame and guilt. Listen to a lyrics version if you don't get it.
Alberta Rose than why did they say that suddenly the child would now that the parents were married had no more? Cause they poisoned the child to have it before they went through the social construct of marriage and made the child ashamed cause her parents were not married!!!
@Elani Aniyvwia Oh for goodness sake, 1983 was a different time than now. Now she'd be told to abort the baby, break up with her boyfriend and focus on getting a career.
Always love for hours to sit and listen to this and all other classic country artists, in this area they aren't even played on the radio anymore, unless listen online, some areas still have the classic radio stations that play it. But this music beats all this new stuff hands down.
RIGHT ON!!!!!;;;;;;
Who is singing this. Jimmy McFaden? I though Jeff Hana sang it.
mikel stevenson Jimmy ibbotson
