Nina Simone - Who Knows Where The Time Goes Lyrics
Across the evening sky, all the birds are leaving
But how can they know it's time for them to go?
Before the winter fire, I will still be dreaming
I have no thought of time
Who knows where the time goes?
Sad, deserted shore, your fickle friends are leaving
Ah, but then you know it's time for them to go
But I will still be here, I have no thought of leaving
I do not count the time
For who knows where the time goes?
Who knows where the time goes?
I know it will be so until it's time to go
So come the storms of winter and then the birds in spring again
I have no fear of time
For who knows how my love grows?
And who knows where the time goes?

Nina Simone Who Knows Where The Time Goes Comments
I love that song ! Lizz Wright covered it this year. And its absolutely beautiful !!!
where can I find that version?
This is one of my favorite songs! In 2017 I recorded a Nina Simoe Tribute album and this one is on it! https://open.spotify.com/album/6Vzri1Jkf1B3qZeVPbrDwV
I found out about her from the movie The Dancer Upstairs
When all is so wonderful, yes, where does the time go? Now, just sweet memories.
Ten years after you kindly posted this. Thank you very much. It's the best performance of this great great song. Nina Simone was great.
Ten years, I knew it was coming up but it had not dawned on me yet until your kind reply Jean Seb. Indeed, who knows where the times goes...
I am grateful to all of you that posted thoughtful comments over the years and I am truly happy that so many have enjoyed this simple compilation. It made me happy to pull it together and it is still such a thing of beauty to me - the 8 minutes when I can relish her voice, her emotions, the music and even the background audience. How I wish I had that chance... We need more beauty in the world right now and I am delighted that Miss Simone can shine so brightly.
Also, for those that came here from The Dancer Upstairs, I would love for you to know that the movie was my introduction to Nina and thus the impetus for this video. Crossing fingers the link stays up for another 10 years! Erma
legendary
Unreal beauty.
The dancer upstairs
She performed this exactly 19 years before my birthday, on 26 October 1969. And I found out just about now. I've loved this song for as long as I've known it. And what a birthday gift, dear heart. I love you so, so much, you amazing woman. Thank you for the best birthday gift, and the best eulogy of all time.
This is such a beautifully sad song and no one could have sung it better, I cry whenever I hear it.
my heart brakes when i hear this song.....just breaks me
RIP to a great voice!1 Nina Simone!!
Its magic.
Always a pleasure! Xo
Beautiful
A Masterpiece. A legend. Sadly, she is the one and only.
Cannot be repeated or replicated! The best of an era. Time always comes up with something NEW! Real time moves forward! Try walking backward? Lol
first time hearing this song, beautiful and heart breaking. i've got tears n snot rollin!
no need for comparisons. two sublime artists.
Tears every time I hear this wonderful [and best version ] of this song
When I heard Nina's first album I was swept away. When I heard this song over 45 years ago I was blown away. I still am. A tribute to two wonderful amazing women.
Amazingly Beautiful, Nina Simone...her spirit still sings
love it x
Saw Ms. Nina do a show in Miami not long before she passed. She needed help walking to the piano, a bit. Even at that, she was angelic and completely owned that crowd that night. One of the Greats. So blessed to have seen her do a show. Beautiful tune. There's only one Nina, a true chanteuse. Nobody like here around these days. Rest well Nina.
Ne dirait-on pas une princesse sur certaines photos ? sa vocation de pianiste a été contrariée mais elle a su devenir une chanteuse que nous n'oublierons pas. Elle nous donne à espérer et ns en avons bien besoin.
Amazing Nina Simone! Love you!RIP
Kim 'the dancer upstairs' ten geldi 😄
Imagine her doing this with Richard Thompson

Sometime in your life you will have the occasion to say, what is this thing called time? You know, what is that - the clock. You go to work by the clock, you get your martini in the afternoon by the clock, you have your coffee by the clock, get on a plane at certain time and arrive, and it goes on and on and on... And time is a dictator, as we know it. Where does it go? What does it do? Most of all, is it alive? It is a thing you cannot touch, and is alive. And then one day you look in the mirror - how old. You say, where did time go?
Oh, God, I'm hypnotized by her voice.
when 'I ain't got, I got life' came out in the 60s I was in my teens.I have been in love with Nena since then.Like all really great stars she had uniqueness that's difficult to put your finger on, even after a lot of thought. She was and is really special.God bless her.
Nina Simone is a legend, Judy Collins sung it beautifully, Eva Cassidy's version is sublime but Sandy's voice brings tears to my eyes on every song she ever sung. Sandy sings as if she is on the verge of heartbreak to quote Thea Gilmore.
Leposa Dezso songs
great Nina
Nice! Woof!
And then one day you look in the mirror you say How Old .... let's just say TIME is something that comes and go just like every other thing. Nina is a good fast thinker
divina....immensa Nina!
Sal, you speak my mind

We are recording tonight and because we are recording we are trying to do some things that actually are too tired to do. But as Faye Dunaway I think it was she she said when Bonnie and Clyde came out and hoped she tried to give people what they wanted. That's a mistake really I know but ah you can't do it but only have to ' You use up everything you got trying to give everybody what they want. But I will learn my lesson soon. And then you will buy more records right cos you gonna see me.
Okay let's see what we can do with this lovely lovely thing that goes past all racial conflict and all kinds of conflicts. It is a reflective tune and sometime in your life you will have occasion to say what is this thing called time. You know what is that ' the clock. You go to work by the clock you get your martini in the afternoon by the clock and you have your coffee by the clock and have to get on a plane at a certain time and arrive. It goes on and on and on and time is a dictator as we know it. Where does it go what does it do' Most of all is it alive, Is it a thing that we cannot touch and is it alive? And then one day you look in the mirror – how old – and you say, “Where did the time go?” We leave you with that one.
omg you are an angel <3
A legend and icon her intelligence Knew no bounds .
I always end up a jibbering wreck, crying my eyes out, when Nina sings. Human.. all too human.
Mark O Brien Not the only one rest assured
Pure genius!
original is still fairport. listen to Deny sing it. Better
gmonkman love Sandy singing this .......but did enjoy it....
Sandy Denny first recorded it with the Strawbs then Fairport
wow, what a version of one of my all time favourite songs. I thought no one could compare to Sandy Denny, but guess I was wrong.
A voice key to heaven
Sometimes we try to do somethings we are too tired to do.
.and you use up everything you got trying to give everybody what they want"..
She took a wonderful song (Sandy Deny) and made it her own. I love her take on it. I thought "yes Nina Simone had to pick this song up and interpret it with sensitivity" She did not let me down.
As many times before - Nina Simone gives her incredible interpretive skills to a fine song. It's a lovely version of Sandy Denny's song
and it is exquisite.
you use up everything you got trying to give everybody what they want
0:13-0:32 pure brilliance
I was there that night! Amazing visuals as well as the music. She put on a musical play ! Yes she did!!! I knew her personally as well, just coming out of college in '65 she hired my best friend Weldon Irvine as her Musical Director. She and I sang Purple Rain together in my living room. She really enjoyed herself. I love and honor her and am sooo grateful to have been allowed by her to spend the times together. May she have peace and joy in all future incarnations. Love love love you Miss Simone.
You are so very fortunate to have had that experience and have those memories!
This is the best! Thank you.
Ayaba Awoyemi, thanks for sharing that story..I wish I would have had the chance to meet her..she just melts my ❤ singing such a soothing voice..Love her!
This record is one of my all time favourites.
Thanks for this
High Priestess of Soul indeed.
Sandy Denny is better!
+ahnucordep How sad that you even compare the two. Completely different works.
It’s art, friend, not sport. There is no best or better. You like what you like. And that applies to all of us. Peace.
If you want to hear the best version of this song, listen to the original by Sandy Denny.
+Pete Hargreaves Sandy Denny was a much underappreciated artist, but in this case she wrote something that I think NS took to another level. I love Denny's performance, but this is a wholly different animal.
For me too, Sandy's original versions (Fairport, Strawbs and live) are still definitive, but I like the cool intimacy of Nina's version - until that horrendous full-band outro!!!! Hope that musical director got sacked on the spot! In any case it can be edited, eh?
Remembering Miss Nina Simone on her 83rd Birthday...we love you Miss Simone!!!
God I love this woman. I enormously regret never having seen her perform live. And I hate it when people start arguing over who has performed a song better. That is not what art is about.
True. There is beauty in the difference
I absolutely enjoy every single version of this beautiful song. Nina Simone is amazing and her introduction is absolutely right on...
lotusgdess You are absolutely right.
Agreed. Sandys is heartrenching and so is this
This is a cover of the original by Sandy Denny and Fairport Convention, frankly the Denny original is far superior.
I enjoy this beautiful video
A legend!
Magnificent woman. Amazing life.
Grande mulher
Frumoasa surpriza !
Does anyone know when this was performed? <3
In 1969 at the Philharmonic Hall, New York
Thank you!! :-)
"..you use up everything you got trying to give everybody what they want"....♥

Beautiful version, very moving.
I watched the movie The Dancer Upstairs and heard this piece toward the end, wow! it blew me away. Since then I have bought a few of her pieces, admire Nina greatly. This song is reminiscent of life in all its glory and tragedy, we cast off summer and embrace winter. Like seasons so are our lives, this lady is magic
Wikitoria Wiringi Wild is the Wind
It was at the start of the movie
Beautiful. But like NoRosesForMe wrote , let´s not forget Sandy Denny, with the group Fairport Convention, who have the best interpretation, at least for me, of this song.Listen here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n2xODjbfYw8
Sublime, what a voice. Love the purity, it's almost angelic.
+Teresa McCallum Our time slides by and we barely recognize it until the flame begins to flicker.
+Bartholomew Jones ,Oh my God yes!
+Teresa McCallum ,I close my eyes every time I hear this song because it touches my heart so!!
never knew she sang this ♥
It is intensely painful to see that one's future has been mostly transmuted into one's past by the mysterious process of time. Yet, time itself is so serene and tranquil it's hard not to think of it as ultimately benign, even as it slowly begins to draw the shroud around us, as it inevitably does. This song captures that perfectly.
+oamericanos69 stop talking shite
beautifully stated.
This is so beautifully put
my goodness....thank you for sharing this with the world. I will cry. I will. But I will cry in rejoicing and heart for you and all of you out there. .....and lets not forget Ms. Sandy Denny .
let's not forget SD - thx
Appalling guitar accompaniment ruins it for me.
@John V i think that is a great finale. Ms Simone most likely left the stage and had her band play thi8s marvellous ....almost reggae....send off. Lovely. Bravo and cheers Mizz Simone darling
+John V beautiful guitar and as Nina said- they were tired - but if you can listen with open ears youll hear the guitar is wonderful and this is a softer approach to this timeless tune. its just damn beautiful. I play guitar so i KNOW it is great. And not easy....for the likes of you
+stacyblue1980 You must really play the guitar badly if you think this is good. By the way, I play the guitar too, and have done for 53 years. I am not a professional but I have played lead guitar in amateur bands. By the way, you should learn some manners: "the likes of you" is a rude expression which could only be justified if you knew me - I could be Eric Clapton for all you know.
I too was thinking what a poor guitar. The guitar fretboard squeaks are not in the score and so are not required or expected from a good guitarist.
Everyone is appalling compared to Richard Thompson
A moving song to listen to in the mornings ,afternoon and evenings!
+Vicki Brooks anytime! :)) always just perfect. Touches the soul and the spirit and our steps as we walk thru our days indeed
Vicki Brooks Yeah!
stacyblue1980 Yes. ..."through our days" Indeed👍
Vicki Brooks and at 1:44am before smoking a joing
Everyone does it in their way, wonder what Miles or Hendrix would have made of it?
In these days of Botox and comic cosmetic surgery, talking about let alone singing about the inevitablity of death is defintley a No-No.
Princess Nina !
Such a strong, warm, grasping echoing whisper of awesome wonder (Nina perfected in this--another MASTERPIECE)!!!. Nina Simone was one of God's Wonderfully Mysterious Works....PERFORMED!
You should take a listen to Sandy Denny's original version. It is amazing
I miss my son Graham..he died 3 years ago ..........30 yrs old ...................omg
@alysa allen I should not have said this...I love this song..but it is a very emotional song for me
@alysa allen dealth is hardest thing we have deal with I lost my dad my mum two dog you never get over it you learn live with it and your son would want you be happy
take care my friend your see him again one day Nina well help to xx
Thank you
A great song inspires many people to sing it. The great singers do it in their own way. This is not the version that comes to mind when I want to play this song in my head but it's a very moving one. I'm particularly knocked out by her stunningly beautiful piano part. I wish she had played piano all the way through. Such a great musician.
Great cover from the Anniversary Band: “Who knows where the time goes?”
