Nichole Nordeman - Why Lyrics
We rode into town the other day,
just me and my daddy.
he said I'd finally reached that age,
and I could ride next to him on a horse
that of course, was not quite as wild.
We heard a crowd of people shouting,
and so we stopped to find out why.
There was that man that my dad said he loved,
but today there was fear in his eyes.
So I said, 'Daddy, why are they screaming?
Why are the faces of some of them beaming?
Why is He dressed in that bright purple robe?
I bet that crown hurts Him more than He shows.
Daddy please, can't you do something?
You said He was stronger than all of those guys;
Daddy, please tell me why.
Why does everyone want Him to die?'
Later that day, the sky grew cloudy,
and Daddy said I should go inside.
Somehow he knew things would get stormy.
Boy was he right, but I could not keep from wondering
if there was something he had to hide.
So after he left, I had to find out.
I was not afraid of getting lost.
So I followed the crowds to a hill
where I knew men had been killed,
and I heard a voice come from the cross.
And it said, 'Father, why are they screaming?
Why are the faces of some of them beaming?
Why are they casting their lots for my robe?
This crown of thorns hurts me more than it shows.
Father please, can't you do something?
I know that You must hear my cry.
I thought I could handle a cross of this size.
Father, remind me why.
Why does everyone want me to die?
Oh, when will I understand why?'
My precious son, I hear them screaming.
I'm watching the face of the enemy beaming.
But soon I will clothe you in robes of my own.
Jesus, this hurts me much more than you know,
but this dark hour, I must do nothing,
though I've heard your unbearable cry.
The power in your blood destroys all of the lies;
soon you'll see past their unmerciful eyes.
Look, there below, see the child
trembling by her father's side.
Now I can tell you why...
she is why you must die.

That dad knew. He wanted her to see. 😭
I went down to the altar to this song at 6 not really understanding this song and why everyone was crying and now that I’m 15 I’m listening to it and I’m crying and understanding why they cried I thank you Jesus so very much praise him forever and ever
Every time I watch this, I burst into tears. Thank you Jesus for saving me.
So blessed with this song!
So Beautiful❤ made me cry🙏
This song had a very dear place in my heart when I was 14 and heard it at a retreat. Afterwards, i learned my mom went to high school and was friends with Nicole.
“Look there below you see the child..trembling by her fathers side. She is why you must die..”
Before I moved, I sang this at my church every Palm Sunday, and I knew I'd practiced it enough when I could get through it without crying, especially at the very very end. This song is so beautiful.
I'm getting ready to sing it for Easter and that is my problem right now is my voice starts cracking during the third verse because I start sobbing like a baby.
@Maria Thorpe yep. Same spot.
🙊😱😨😰😰😰
Lol.. Jesus... Performing tricks Chris angel can do.... But unable to do what your avg doctor can do... Lol. Anyone believing in religion is like an elephant being held by twine.
This was my favorite songs for a decade... But then I finally reached reality and became an adult.. and realized we live in a hostile environment.. we are small part of this universe.
And since Jesus is a disgusting concept. a slave concept... I unfortunately lost one of the most beautiful songs ever... I appreciate Nicole's work here... But I can't separate the lyrics anymore....
Lu Simmons -What do you mean when you say Jesus is a disgusting concept? A concept? Jesus was a human being that was fully man and fully God. What do you mean a slave concept? I don’t understand your post at all
For those of you that you haven't asking the Lord Jesus to forgive you from hell fire, The Sinner's prayer is here below.
God the Father, I am a sinner and therefore I must be doomed into the lake of fire because of all my sins I've done. Please, forgive me as I repent and save me from that horror of eternal hell fire. I fully believe that Jesus Christ is the Lord God himself, he came to earth, lived his life of no sins at all, he was then torn apart in the blood of whips, nailed on the cross, died in hell instead of me after he dripped all of his blood and water, and then resurrected after 3 days. Only the blood of that Calvary Cross is the redemption from that death penalty as I profess with all of my pure genuineness. Thank you Lord God for having my soul now forbidden from that gate of eternal second death and lastly through all these words in my prayer I confessed under the name of the only Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ ( My name is now written and found in the book of life ) Amen.
The only issue I have with this song is how some of the lyrics make it seem as if Jesus was ignorant of/confused by the reasons behind what was not true at all. Yes, Christ was 100% human, but He was also 100% _GOD._ He always knew what awaited Him and why He had to die. The Bible is quite clear on that:
"Then cometh Jesus with them unto a place called Gethsemane, and saith unto the disciples, Sit ye here, while I go and pray yonder. And he took with him Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, and began to be sorrowful and very heavy.
Then saith he unto them, My soul is exceeding sorrowful, even unto death: tarry ye here, and watch with me. And he went a little farther, and fell on his face, and prayed, saying, O my Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me: nevertheless not as I will, but as thou wilt. And he cometh unto the disciples, and findeth them asleep, and saith unto Peter, What, could ye not watch with me one hour?Watch and pray, that ye enter not into temptation: the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.
He went away again the second time, and prayed, saying, O my Father, if this cup may not pass away from me, except I drink it, thy will be done. And he came and found them asleep again: for their eyes were heavy. And he left them, and went away again, and prayed the third time, saying the same words. Then cometh he to his disciples, and saith unto them, Sleep on now, and take your rest: behold, the hour is at hand, and the Son of man is betrayed into the hands of sinners. Rise, let us be going: behold, he is at hand that doth betray me." ~ Matthew 26:36-46
Q: Did Jesus know He was probably going to be put to death? Couldn't He have done something to avoid it and keep on living? -- K.McK.
A: Yes, *_Jesus knew beyond doubt_* that His days were numbered, and that He would be put to death by those who opposed Him. He also knew when it would happen. Only weeks before His death He told His followers, *_"They will mock him, insult him and spit on him; they will flog him and kill him"_* (Luke 18:31-33).
And yet Jesus did not shrink back from this or try to escape. Instead, the Bible says, He deliberately continued on His way. Why did He do this? Not because He had some kind of a twisted martyr complex, or because He was tired of living -- not at all. Instead, *_He knew it was part of God's plan_* for Him to die -- because by His death, He would become the final and complete sacrifice for all our sins. Jesus declared, *_"The Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many."_* (Mark 10:45).
Was there any other way for our sins to be forgiven? Only hours before His arrest Jesus struggled alone in prayer, asking God to take away the horror of what was about to happen to Him. He prayed, "Father, if you are willing, take this cup from me; yet not my will, but yours be done" (Luke 22:42).
But *there was no other way* -- for on the cross, all our sins were transferred to Him, and He took upon Himself the judgment and Hell that we deserve. Think of it: He died for you! God loves you that much! Have you responded to His love by committing your life to Christ? ~Question posed to, and answered by, Billy Graham - who I imagine is having the time of his [eternal] life right now. :)
Anyway, that is only kerfuffle that puts a damper on this song for me, and it would seem that judging by the comments, I'm far from the only one a little bit confused and put off by the wording. The ultimate message remains truthful, and I'm certainly not here to start a row or denigrate Nichole Nordeman, whose music I adore... I just wish this song had been worded differently, for accuracy's sake.
When I first listened to this song, and every time thereafter, when it got to the 3rd verse, I cried.
17 years later, I listened to it again a few minutes ago and I still lost it. This is the ONLY song that has EVER had that effect on me.
I'm getting ready to sing this for Easter and I'm not sure I can do it because everytime I get to that spot my voice starts cracking as I try not to sob.
This song speaks to me every time I listen to it. THANK YOU JESUS CHRIST OUR LORD FOR YOUR SACRIFICE FOR US. I CAN'T IMAGINE THE PAIN YOU WENT THROUGH JESUS.
THANK YOU JESUS.
THIS IS WHAT I'M THANKFUL FOR.
I LOVE YOU JESUS CHRIST OUR LORD😌😌😇😇💖💖👆👆🙌🙌🙏🙏👏👏👼👼
Im Jewish but I love her voice and the lyrics are dope. No, Jesus is not my savior but he was a good teacher and should be remembered as such in history. This is a wonderful song tho :)
Ethan Jonas he is your savior!!!
This is a very touching song. except the part that made it seem that Jesus didn't understand why this was happening to him St. John 3.??? anyone else noticed this?
Jesus was in his human state...and questioned the sutuation like we all would especially in excruciating pain .
we all ask God why and its ok to as long as you remember His plan is not our plan . His answers are not always ours to understand but to trust His perfect plan . Even Jesus suffered. God's blessings to all !
Yes, but he says « remind me why! » So he knew, but I think in the midst of difficulty, any person would struggle, even for the Savior!!!
Jesus actually did question God near the end, probably to show us that is is okay so long as you still accept that everything is in the control of God's will and that He has a plan.
Because at Gethsemane the night before Jesus' death he asked God to take this burden from him of it was in His will and if there was another way. Then again on the cross he pleaded, "Father, why have you forsaken me?"
I'm not the Christian I used to be... really. But I thought of this song randomly after 10 years... Can't help, but cry. What a touching song.
+melanie middleton There is still hope :) Think about it... Look around you and think, "why im i here?" Darwin?
I love this song it makes me want to cry. I cant believe that Jesus did that for me. For everyone!!!
+Renee Hanmore no he didnt.
+Neil Richardson actually yes he did :)))
This song is the song God used to bring me to salvation, 14 years ago.
Arthur Banks -me as well! I never forget the message it spoke to my heart and how everything my pastor and friends were sharing/teaching finally made sense. Finally clicked. To me it was that He was the Lamb. THE LAMB that paid the price for me.
@Terry Wilson horses aren't extinct. I see them all the time.
I'm not a Christian, but I can still appreciate it. I love her voice, and the heartfelt lyrics of this song.
+Miss Kitty I hope that you will accept Jesus as your savior because it will change your life forever.
John 3:16 "For God so loved the world , that he gave his only son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life".
+Miss Kitty Please get right with God before its everlasting too late.
I did once
The bible tells us to examine yourself to see if you are in the faith. Since you are not a christian, your assessment evaluation is clearly made definite. This means that you never was truly born of the spirit. When a person is born of the spirit, they have totally changed. If you desire to be saved, repent and believe. Do not ask Jesus into your heart. Give him your whole heart and everything that you are to everything that he is. Repent is to feel ashamed of sinning and forsaking it. Belief means that you put all your trust in Jesus.
Ally, I'm Christian, so that means I love you no matter what! Your CHOICE is your own and that is part of the reason, I believe Christ died for us. I can only pray for you in hopes that you will CHOOSE to accept the free gift of love, mercy, forgiveness and LOVE LIKE YOU HAVE NEVER KNOWN. I sincerely love you and that will never change regardless of what YOU DECIDE. God bless you and embrace you in His unconditionally loving arms.
This song literally made me cry
Nichole not nicole. so easy to kill an artists' ministry, people.
+Judy Ibezim And after a year the misspelling is still not fixed.
A simple typo is not going to kill the ministry of any artist who has been anointed/called by God; His hand will guide them and their ministry exactly where He wants them. At least, that's what I believe. I mean, one of my absolute favorite artists of all time is Rich Mullins. He went to be with the God He adored 20+ years ago and yet I _still_ see God using his music and message to change lives by introducing/bringing people to the saving knowledge of Jesus Christ. God can use anyone, even the dead. I think Nichole Nordeman's ministry is gonna be just fine. ;)
Does anyone know who did the original video for this clip. I'd like to use parts of it for our church's Easter program, especially the clips with the father and daughter, but I'd like to get permission and also see if there is a higher quality version.
Any help anyone?

I have been crucified with Christ; and it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself up for me. -galatians 2:20
Dan Huffenberger amen!!!
this song never fails to make me cry. :(
Thank you Lord for your sacrifice. Thank you for helping us understand why.
So sad that Jesus actually went through that for us...man how he LOVES us!! I love this song Nicole Nordman is an awesome singer & awesome woman of God
To SoldierofChrist12345 - I would like to use this video as an illustration in a sermon this coming Sat. However, I am deployed and do not have access to Youtube in the chapel here. Is it possible to have you email me the movie file or is that out of the question? If it can be done, I email is [email protected]. Thank you either way, this video is a blessing and solid reminder of what He's done for us.
thank you lord for saving my life!!!
iloveyou LORD GOD...even though i made so much mistake, your still there for me to save me from my sin...iloveyousomuch...thanks!!
I cry every time I hear this song. He paid a debt He didn't owe, I owed a debt I couldn't pay.
this is a wonderfuol video - and would love to play it in our church, is there any way i can get a better quality version that can be projected?
thanks
caroline
i so love this song ;)
This song is so beautiful. I'm crying watching this video. It's amazing how something that's under six minutes can move me to tears. Thank you, Lord. Thank you for everything.
Jesus gave his life for us willingly, we ought to remember that, but I am not saying he didnt have a battle on the way to the cross.
my daughter sang this @ church it touched my heart..
i've been looking for this version of the video for like 4 years now....so great i found it at last! it explains a lot...why Jesus had to die..the participation of men and the enemy...how we were all saved---for those who receive Christ as the only Savior!...the power of the cross! the eternal Love of the Father! Jesus, You made it all possible! We are so undeserving!
i LOVED the song and was crying until i got to that part. i dont think Jesus asked "why" because he already knew why. he volunteered to die for our sins, he knew what he was doing. i belive he was grieved but i dont think he would have asked His Father "why"... just my opinion. and then i got to the 3rd chorus and started crying all over again! this song is awesome and christians dont think about Jesus' death enough. we need to focus more on it, and realize what a huge price he paid FOR US!
this shows like every man he did not want to suffer and die. BUT, unlike ANY MAN he willingly did so for us showing his divinity. I believe this is what the lyrics are trying to say "Show me again father. show me the beauty in this unbearably gruesome time."
You make a valid point and I know this is way late I just recently found this video after looking for this song for a whole year and finding it just in time for easter (my how the holy spirit moves) Nicole makes a point in the lyrics of saying "Father, REMIND me why" even before the final hours before his capture he says "Father, if you are willing, take this cup from me; yet not my will, but yours be done." Luke 22:42
Is there any chance you can post a higher quality version?
I fell all the questions Jesus asks in the bible were asked to get the person he asked to learn, not himself .In the same way this song is a question .
@co122279 Oh no you didn't say anything offensive & you make a good point JESUS knew why HE came into the world to give HIS life as a "ransom for many!"
@co122279 I don't think its JESUS who is asking why? I think Nicole is making it known & challenging people to ask why JESUS had to die. Peace be with you.
God bless you for sharing this video, my brother.
