Neutral Milk Hotel - Three Peaches Lyrics

There is no dream, so wake up
Run your lips across your fingers till you find
Some scent of yourself that you can hold up high
To remind yourself that you didn't die
On a day that was so crappy - whole and happy, you're alive

And you seem so bruised
And it's beautiful as it's reflecting off from you as it shines
You're in the bathroom carving holiday designs into yourself
Hoping no one will find you, but they found you
And they took you, and you somehow survived

There is no dream, so wake up
And if the holidays don't hollow out your eyes
Then press yourself against whatever
You find to be beautiful and trembling with life
Because I'm so happy that you didn't die

Neutral Milk Hotel Three Peaches Comments

I can sing like this when I'm drunk.

  2. Matt H

This is such a beautiful song. I get that this album is overshadowed by ITAOTS but I don’t understand why this song doesn’t get more love. It’s arguably one of the best songs Jeff has ever written.

  3. TWL .v

The chords are G and Em.

  4. Floraline

Somehow NMH, the dirge, warbling, whatever, are so evocative of my 20s in the 90s and how I wasted them---nah, it was life experience---working my a** off for a restaurant group, living with an alcoholic, putting on a pretty face every day and faking it til I made it and I never made it anything but out of there.

  5. Bob DeLord

It's when I catch the fly will press a button to spark an electrical being.

  6. Ma Fe

Shoutout to the people leaving positive and loving messages here for others to read. Much love to everyone. You all matter.

My friend killed himself last year. A few months later he appeared in one of my dreams. I was so surprised, I remember reaching out to touch him to make sure he was really there. I could feel his body under my hand. I felt in this moment that this was really him, and this was my chance to say goodbye. I just remember holding him for a long time and telling him I love and miss him. Love you Ryan.

Tell your loved ones you love them. You never know if you'll have the chance to see them again. There might not be no "next time". Spread love. Just keep spreading love.

Yo Jeffy, cheer up bub. Its all good- give it a decade and a half, you'll have a bunch of strangers who act like they know you personally and argue with others about what you're singing about cuz they like so get you they're your biggest fan they been listening since Steven colbert gave a shoutout

    Ricky Snyder

Calm down we get it , you knew the band before these younger poeple , who cares. So what if they try to get their own meaning from the songs , that's what music is lol. So stop commenting on every one of his songs saying how you've known the band longer.

    TheCandyHole

@Ricky Snyder nah it's funny, like an alternate universe where Kurt Cobain stayed alive

  9. Hector Velasquez

i cant the violin is...is.... SO fucking bad but i like the singing

    Christopher Jenkins

    What violin?

  10. Play JahRise

    Jeff Mangum is Jesus

  13. miko tikkanen

this is probably the saddest song i've ever heard, knowing the story behind this song

  14. Horror Wagen

    sounds like oh comely

  15. Virtuvirus

This is like discount version of Comely

    Horror Wagen

    sounds like same chords also

    Chullain

Technically, Oh Comely would be the discount version of this, this came out before Oh Comely

    Vincenzo Marano Guitarist

    @Chullain blasted

    John Warner

Songwriters will also intentionally connect songs through musical themes, similar chords/progressions, etc. I can't say if that's the case here but it's possible.

  16. Shane V

Come play with us! Today’s music theme is “Three” https://www.facebook.com/groups/SupercordsMusicClub/

  17. Luan Nobrega

if someone that i love commit suicide, i would be destroyed inside

  18. ItsMeAgain John

What a masterpiece of a song. Gives me chills but in a good way.

  19. fast fingers

love your channel, ive found amazing music

  20. Jameson Jaksch

I'm gonna cut straight to the chase, something some people in this comment section aren't doing. People can be mean, people want to conform. It's human nature, they don't want to feel at the bottom of the food chain, they don't want to be afraid, they don't want to be themselves. That's the problem, that's why no one talks to you. Your special, you don't conform, you don't need to go with the grain, and for this your smarter and more strongwilled than any of those bastards. Ending it will only make you look weak and afraid, I hope you realize this.

    Sincerely,
Someone who's going through the same thing and is still trying to figure it out.

    The Daily Weather Forecast

abc efg I agree with this more tbh. You can't just say that you're this special snowflake that's better than everyone like op is doing.

  21. Chris Ramirez

Nothing like Jeff's voice when you're in a shitty mood. It's always comforting.

    Chris Ramirez

@Jameson Jaksch Yeah, and I love JD.

    Chris Ramirez

@nathan langford Oh, god. I can't stand them. The singer of that band sounds like he is mocking Paul Banks or Ian Curtis. lol

    Amanda Yarlott

chris Ramirez, you are correct. always helps.

    michael33145

@nathan langford got no doubt the decemberists are very very aware of and influenced by nmh

    TheCandyHole

His voice sounds like treading water knowing you'll eventually go under to me

  22. Ricardo Espinoza

I know I spend a lot of time talking people out of suicide or depression, but recently I've been experiencing difficulties of my own... I sat in my balls this morning and really need your guys's prayers. Light a candle. Pray to Guadalupe fam

    ACB

+Ricardo Espinoza sitting on your own balls is a raw deal. i'm sorry.

  23. AtlanticSpamHammer

Why is it called "Three Peaches"?

    nathan langford

    LSD, that's why.

  24. OnlineWalk3r

Don't worry people, it gets better, don't give up just yet

    Chris Ramirez

It's sweet to think of all the people that have and will see this years after you posted it. It truly makes a difference. :)

    MarksmanGPBR

+OnlineWalk3r thanks, your comment warms my heart

  25. Championette

This song reminds me of a dark time in my life, over a decade ago... when I was... "in the bathroom carving holiday designs..." and someone told me they were so happy that I didn't die...

  26. st1nee

The story of Jessica is one of the saddest I've ever heard. Jeff Mangum singing "I'm so happy you didn't die" but then, 10 years later, she dies - it haunts me.

    Matthew Setlak

+BRUNOMISAD it was a Jennifer, not a Jessica, and she dead.

    Ricardo Espinoza

    Her name was Billy

    neros1234

Yeah, that's terrible. Imagine the pain Jeff felt when he thought she was okay and stable and he wrote her a song, all for nothing. It's really depressing.

    Benjamin Wheeler

Oh wow u must be jeffys biggest fan

    TheCandyHole

    Her name was Robert Paulson

  27. AshKetchum442

if youre reading this, and having scary thoughts- know that you are loved. you are loved so much.

    anonynomnomnom

If you're reading this and thinking, "horseshit. If I'm so loved, why does no one talk to me?" - know that they are just as scared and desperate as you are. Sometimes all you can do is blindly reach your hand in the fire and pray you don't get burned.

    Kfc Kfc

if you're reading this you're a giantic genetic fuck up freak and you should probably just get the fuck off the earth already

    The Daily Weather Forecast

    Kfc Kfc Yeah right dude.

    Fractilion

    @Kfc Kfc projecting

  28. Samantha Pipes

    There is no dream.

  29. FlyingWhales13

    and david levithan, don't forget
    :^)

  30. qwertyuiopdan1

Hope you're alright now, and in the words of Morrissey

    "But don't forget the songs
    That made you cry
And the songs that saved your life
    Yes, you're older now
    And you're a clever swine
But they were the only ones who ever stood by you"

  31. Murry Tennant

Will Grayson, Will Grayson by John Green brought me here. Good fucking song. x

    neros1234

    same pal

  32. Ariel Pinzon

this song saved me from suicide many times

    Tariq Dickens

Ariel Pinzon you saved yourself, the music taught you how. Best wishes for your future :)

  33. Spin Al-Fluid

In my Writers Group there's a group notebook where we're writing a group novel. I wrote the lyrics to the song in the back. I wonder how long until someone notices...

    Benjamin Wheeler

    Wow ur such a hack
    Btw ur group is ghey

  34. bigstar66

You can hear Oh Comely all over this (and little of Ghost too)

  35. Agnete M

    wtf andrew <3

  36. Cohen M

Im so happy, I'm so happy...

    Daniël Van Barneveld

Cohen M, isn't that what Kierkegaard said, just before he died?
