Nelson, Willie - Just Dropped In (To See What Condition My Condition Was In) Lyrics

Woke up this mornin' with the sundown shinin' in
Found my mind in a brown paper bag again
Tripped on a cloud and fell eight miles high
Tore my mind on a jagged sky
And I just dropped in to see what condition my condition was in
Lord, Lord, Lord, what condition my condition was in

I pushed my soul in a deep dark hole and followed it in
Met myself crawlin' out as I was crawlin' in
I woke up so tight I said I'd never unwind
I saw so much that it broke my mind
I just dropped in to see what condition my condition was in
Lord, Lord, Lord, what condition my condition was in

Somebody painted April fool in big black letters on a dead end sign
I had my foot on the gas, when I left the road it blew out my mind
Eight miles out of Memphis, Lord, I got no spare
Eight miles straight up downtown somewhere
I just dropped in to see what condition my condition was in
Lord, Lord, Lord, what condition my condition was in
What condition my condition was in

I love both Mickey Newbury's and Willie Nelson's versions. On this song Mickey is more like a soul singer, and Willie is more like a blues singer.
Kenny Rogers sings it pretty well, but the pop/rock production on the hit record sounds dated (and kind of tasteless to begin with). When he (and First Edition) did it on TV in 1972, it sounded somewhat better.

    C.... T....

    KR is the definitive version

    C.... T....

    @EJ S Whatever that means.

    C.... T....

@Common Tater KR = Kenny Rogers. Is English a second language?

OMG, Sing your own songs Willie, Different version or not, Only Kenny Rogers can sing that

    Mickey Newbury wrote great songs.

  8. R.... E....

Mickey Newbury does it better than anything a pop star could manage; Willie's version's real gritty, too.

I know Willie has a boatload of fans. My dad was one of them so I heard his music all the time while I was growing up. I think Willie is a fantastic person. A real salt of the earth kind of guy and I love watching his interviews, hearing old stories, etc. Having said all of that I just don't get it when it comes to his music. No matter what song I hear him play he always seems to be playing behind the beat. I don't find his singing or guitar playing anything stellar either. I'm sorry, don't mean to be trolling. I have no doubt he's a hell of a nice guy. I just don't understand the popularity with his music.

    timishere1925 no you're absolutely right

I believe it's the songs which Willie wrote that became huge hits are what positioned him to do his own songs as the artist. ...In 1958, he moved to Houston, Texas, after signing a contract with D Records. He sang at the Esquire Ballroom weekly and he worked as a disk jockey. During that time, he wrote songs that would become country standards, including "Funny How Time Slips Away", "Hello Walls", "Pretty Paper", and "Crazy". In 1960 he moved to Nashville, Tennessee, and later signed a publishing contract with Pamper Music which allowed him to join Ray Price's band as a bassist. In 1962, he recorded his first album, ...And Then I Wrote. Due to this success, Nelson signed in 1964 with RCA Victor and joined the Grand Ole Opry the following year. After mid-chart hits in the late 1960s and the early 1970s, Nelson retired in 1972 and moved to Austin, Texas. The ongoing music scene of Austin motivated Nelson to return from retirement, performing frequently at the Armadillo World Headquarters. ...I hope that this provides some insight....

WOW  this  is  cool.  Can't  believe  I  heard  a  song  Willie  sang  for  the  first  time  today.  Believe  Kenny  Rogers  and  The First  Edition  wrote  it  and  first  did  it.  Thank  you  for  a  post  I  never  heard.  Roger  Crowder  in  Burnet,  Texas.   Have  a  GOD  Blessed  day  everyone.

    R.... C....

No...the legendary Mickey Newbury wrote this song. Many have recorded it.

    R.... C....

@JL Sagely Mickey's version is very, very good

    R.... C....

And Jerry Lee Lewis was one of the first to cover it.

    R.... C....

Check Mickey Newbury's version. It's his song, amazing stuff.

  24. m.... ....

    R.... M....

    yeah man agree :)

    R.... M....

It's just a different interpretation of the song and it's veeery well executed i love it actually :)

    R.... M....

    He started here

    R.... M....

@Sean Gallagher find Mickey Newberry's version and you won't have to ask why

    R.... M....

Great singers both, Mickey and Willie, and being true to themselves, their records of this song are quite different from each other.

  33. L.... K....

Fantastic Version of Mickey's killer song. Thinking about all the different versions from Mickeys original, his bootleg, Kenny Rogers' and now Willie the song really reveals its potential and depth!

  34. l.... ....

  44. 1.... ....

this sounds like its sung like it should be,nursing a mean mofo of a comedown,i personally like jerry lees version, but this is how it should be.only in my opinion.sweet stuff.

  45. D.... R....

@TheMajik07 God damn it you are SO correct.

  46. b.... ....

Weed and Willie...ya can't get any better than that...

  47. J.... H....

Mickey Newbury wrote this song, and probably does play the definitive version since it's his song. Mickey and Kenny Rogers were both Houston natives and new each other prior to Kenny's recording. As much as I love Kenny's version, I do feel that Mickey's is more pure. Second has to be this version which is very much more influenced by Mickey's original than Kenny's. Still, any way you look at it it is a fantastic song that certainly has endured the test of time.

    J.... H....

Mel Tillis wrote this song...very prolific country writer.

    J.... H....

    @Danial Decker Fool.

  48. U.... ....

@monkeyshineVideos i disagree, even tho Jerry had the first recording of the tune, the best version deff goes to Kenny Rogers and The First Edition

  49. D.... S....

very very great version, has something of the latest lp's of an old jonny cash, also a little howling and sad,,, beautifull, can you tell me on which records this version is? a already got the album the great divide, with the same song but a very ugly version....
You would make me very happy telling me, thanx!

  50. h.... ....

Whoa crazy. Sounds like Willy singing a Tom Waits song from one of his latest records. Yes, I know when it's from. That's what it sounds like

  51. C.... F....

This song is beautiful, change your life with it, make love to it, read your life with it, sense your density with it.

  52. b.... m....

@TheClash122 Actually he DID say he could sing better and I never implied that Mr. loonybin007 said anything else about his own musical or writing talents. I merely suggested that he fancied himself to be a judge of music calling anything Willie ever did "horrible." I think that you have fairly decent tastes in music so you should know better than to call something horrible because you don't like it. Listen to the "Cut the Crap" album sometime and rethink The Clash.

  53. T.... ....

@bx0xd Keep your shirt on, Scrappy... The dude didn't say he's a better writer or singer than Willie. All he said was that he could do a better cover than what we hear here from Mr. Nelson, and I wouldn't be surprised if in fact he can. This is not a good cover. Anything else that Willie Nelson has recorded is irrelevant. And, please.... your Super Mario snub was weak and self-serving. Try to refrain from "high-fiving" yourself for your own remarks.

  54. d.... h....

When Willie starts being a song "stylist", he sucks hard and I am OUT !!!

  55. a.... ....

@hahickman84 Song names of Mickey's "train songs" would be appreciated... Thanks !

  56. b.... m....

@loonybin007 first up you, sir, are a laugh riot. I bet you could also write better songs than Willie too, right? Songs like Crazy by Patsy Cline. Or maybe you're a better artist because you've recorded more than the 407 songs that He has. No I would think that you are more like Super Mario, because you just got got 1-up'd.

  57. B.... ....

    @loonybin007 Ignoramus

  58. M.... M....

this is horrible. I can't sing worth squat and I could do better.

  59. t.... ....

    sick just sick
