Nelson, Willie - Hands On The Wheel Lyrics
At a time when the world seems to be spinnin' hopelessly out of control,
There's deceivers an' believers an' old in-betweeners,
That seem to have no place to go.
Well, it's the same old song, it's right an' it's wrong,
An' livin' is just somethin' that I do.
An' I found myself in you.
I looked to the stars, tried all of the bars.
An' I've nearly gone up in smoke.
Now my hand's on the wheel, I've something that's real,
An' I feel like I'm goin' home.
An' in the shade of an oak down by the river,
Sit an old man an' a boy,
Settin' sail, spinnin' tales an' fishin' for whales,
Well, it's the same damn tune, it's the man in the moon.
It's the way that I feel about you.
An' with no place to hide, I looked in your eyes,
An' I found myself in you.
An' I looked to the stars, tried all of the bars.
An' I've nearly gone up in smoke.
Now my hand's on the wheel, I've something that's real,
An' I feel like I'm goin' home.

Nelson, Willie Hands On The Wheel Comments
My favourite song ever.
Man thats a great album
About 1975 my buddy and I were sitting in the parking lot of Leeds High School listening to this before school. It was raining hard. A boy in an old Mustang spun out and hit a large oak. The part of " constantly spinning"was playing. We laughed so hard. Pleasant memories of better times.
Greatest country album ever recorded. It's not even close people.

Absolutely the best song Willie ever sang! Learned to play this song right after the movie came out.

Beautiful song by Willie Nelson. They sure do not make music like that anymore. They do not even come close.
I met a lady once while I was playing guitar after we left the bar I told her I’d play a song she had never heard. I played and sang this song she said have you been I’m my truck so she said walk out here with me. She had playing in her truck.

VERY SPIRITUAL MESSAGE. THE SONG IN THE LAST SCENE FROM THE MOVIE, ELECTRIC HORSEMAN.
So good.
A good woman can help a man from going to hell but a bad one can help him get there
This music isn't dying with the next generations. There's a few of us that still know good music.

39 people need an extra hole in their head
Damn, this is a good song.
One of my top 3 for Willie. So beautiful.
Nyaah. Nyaah. Make ya cry!
The electric horseman movie soundtrack
The Electric Horseman was full of Willie Nelson songs, and Willie played a role, too. His best line was, "I'm gonna find me one of them keno girls who can suck the chrome off a trailer hitch and kick back."
Haha I remember that! When Jane Fonda character was interviewing him at that hotel. Great line!👍👏😎👊
Schoolboy Q and A$AP Rocky sent me here
Although Willie didn't write this one, if anyone ever asks you who is Willie Nelson just play them this song. It is just pure Willie through and through.
my friend Bill Callery wrote this masterpiece .
Hey Rich,
I think Willie is saying he has made peace with life and is comfortable with the road he has taken.
Eddie Noonan the weed he smokes makes the world more comfortable 😎😎
Un no. This is the conclusion of the album. After killing his beloved and her lover, after killing the yellow haired lady, after meeting his new love in Denver, the Red Headed Stranger is old. He sits with his son and they are watched over by that lady he feel in love with in Denver. The red headed stranger's life is now at peace and he is happy and content.
At a time when the world seems to be
Spinning hopelessly out of control
There's deceivers and believers
And old in-betweeners
That seem to have no place to go
Well it's the same old song
It's right and it's wrong
And livin' is just something I do
And with no place to hide
I looked in your eyes
And I found myself in you
I looked to the stars
Tried all of the bars
And I've nearly gone up in smoke
Now my hands on the wheel
Of something that's real
And I feel like I'm goin' home
And in the shade of an oak
Down by the river
Sat an old man and a boy
Settin' sails, spinnin' tails
And fishin' for whales
With a lady that they both enjoy
Well it's the same damn tune
It's the man in the Moon
It's the way that I feel about you
And with no place to hide
I looked in your eyes
And I found myself in you
And I looked to the stars
Tried all of the bars
And I've nearly gone up in smoke
Now my hands on the wheel
Of something that's real
And I feel like I'm goin' home

So good
Here's to the old in-betweeners.
I thought it was (it’s the same DOWN tune)
freedom
This sweet song is about me and my grandson and driving at dawn through St. George UT. Cool red sand and cowboy boots never worn but there.

My dad brought me here. Thanks pops for all the wonderful music growing up.... I love you and miss you everyday... Rest easy in that coal camp in the sky
kyle williams How did we grow up with the same dad Kyle?
He was a coal miner too. I used to sit with him in his old car at the local drive in restaurant in Evarts Ky and listen to Willie Nelson. This was one of his favorite songs. My dad worked himself to an early death as a coal miner, a broken man physically but not in spirit. He always found joy in making others laugh. Our fathers were special men Kyle. Because not too many men have the bravery to be a coal miner but ours did.
Amen to that!
U said them words man, but if u don't mind I would like to say that them words are so appropriate for my dad, only difference is my dad would be in a pile of copper and not coal. To the last of the best
@Eric Whitlock I've been lucky enough to work the copper mines with my Dad, just as he did with his Dad 40+ years ago. And my Dad made sure I knew what great music was, just as I will make sure my daughter knows. God bless all you boys.
Amen, my grandpa introduced me to Willie, lost him in 98. Rest easy to your pops and my pawpaw
Looks like ole Bill's having the last laugh here...
"...somethin' that's real. And I feel like I'm goin' home". mensaje mejor de todos
Ranch Breakfast brought me here
+Smokey298 You obviously haven't seen the movie "The Electric Horseman" starring Robert Redford and Willie Nelson. Go rent it, it's a good movie and you will know what Ranch Breakfast is.
me too <3
Jim Walker ranch breakfast is way better then wheaties
it's full of nuts & olives
It's got more good stuff than bacon, eggs, toast...
The outro to The Electric Horseman w Robert Redford, Jane Fonda and Willie. Find yourself a Keno girl! Love this song!
+kuchek lol. I had just gotten back from Montana, working in Yellowstone, when this song came out. Will never stop loving it.
It was the perfect song to play over the closing credits as Sonny Steele hitchhiked on a lonesome highway in the west.
'Hands on the Wheel' seems to be more poignant now than ever. Hello Brothers, hope you are all well. See you on the other side but...not yet.
you got that right
How I feel about the love of my life.
Red Headed Stranger was/is a Great concept album.
According to Rolling Stone, the greatest country album ever recorded.
@Ronald60202 I would have to agree😊
barbarosa
Willie Nelson Tunes any man that's been through a divorce, due to infidelity! This is the way it felt for me.... It's just... Dead on!
Such beautiful words. I feel like I'm going home....
I love this song.
"And with no place to hide, I looked in your eyes, And I found myself in you" This is beautiful, i love it
so much love for a great man and a great song.
From one of my favorite "Northern Exposure' episodes....love it!
+Nathan Patterson - Not ashamed to admit it's my FAVORITE episode of Northern Exposure. Only once in a lifetime does something like that come around. Perfection.
Nathan Patterson my favorite episode too. Three Amigos. Amazing show!
TXSugarMagnolia it was so unlike any other episode, no Joel and Maggie, mostly just holding and Maurice in the back country, with great music. This song came at the end, when they were going through the snow
Quite possibly one of the greatest songs ever written.
Right next to "Helleljuah" and "House of the Rising Sun" and "A Whiter Shade of Pale".
All people, young or old, should hear these songs.
And as people, we could possibly......................................
Jake McKay agreed
Halleljuah? Have you listened to the words?
Thank you!
You must have a small music catalog. Great song though
But, is it a happy song or a sad song?
Three Amigos ! Norther Exposure :) ...
That episode always stuck out in my mind. thanks for mentioning that.
I just watched that the other day with my father
I have this segment on vhs i think still
Yes Michal M. yes. Great show, great episode!
That was the 3rd episode I ever watched on that show! I bought the whole set of DVD's. Remember the fight over cards at the bar in Two Forks? It all started when that fellow said to Maurice, "You old fart, I ought to drop you like a sack of potatoes!" 😆😆
Reminds me of my youth and the place and time and the person i was with at the time.I hope she's doing well!!
@tim henslee I'm sure she hopes the same for you, tim. God bless.
Wiilie is amazing.
@Cyndi Wallace-Murphy Damn straight, Cyndi.
This song was written by Bill Callery.
But thank God Willy sang it!
And bless 'im for it
That the way I'm going out
Hands on the wheel
This is one of the very few songs that can instantly bring me to tears, such a beautiful heartbreaking song..
This song saved my life. And i did go home. For 30 years now. .There really are good hearted women
There's a lotta soul and reflection in this album, Willie is certainly an American treasure!
+MisterE103 - I bought this album when it first came out in 1975...played it for a lady that I was dating, she said it sux, he can't sing & that album is garbage. I got rid of her but I still have that vinyl album and I still play it.
+Joe Jackson Hey Joe, I guess that's what dating is for. To find this stuff out before we commit. How can a person not like this? I was 13 when my ma bought this album. We wore it out. Jim
This is from one of the best albums ever made. It's a great story played to music. It's complex in its over simplicity.
If you want to learn guitar learn E, A, D, B7th and you can at least strum along to most of the songs on this album.
to my son and the lady we both enjoy, thank you Willie !
Great song. I first got the album in the early 80s and about the same time I got Phases and Stages. Thirty years later this song has stood the test of time. I was thinking of it today. It's got more meaning to be today. Thanks for posting this and thanks, Willie.
...settin’ sails, spinnin tales <3 Oh, Harry, we all know :)
HARRY brought me here... hahaha
Me as well - Never heard the song before (to my knowledge), but just had to hear it again after seing Harry perform it
Let the boy sing!
A Willie Nelson song for you ,Special Lady
No it came out on the Red Headed Stranger album in 74 or 75, but it was on the soundtrack for the Electric Horseman which came out a few years later.
