Nelson, Willie - After The Fire Is Gone Lyrics
The bottle is almost empty the clock just now struck ten
Darling I had to call you to our favorite place again
We know it's wrong for us to meet but the fire's gone out at home
There's nothing cold as ashes after the fire is gone
And there's nothing cold as ashes, after the fire is gone
Your lips are warm and tender your arms hold me just right
Sweet words of love you remember that the one at home forgot
Each time we say it's last time but we keep hanging on
And there's nothing cold as ashes after the fire is gone
Love is where you find it, when you find no love at home
And there's nothing cold as ashes, after the fire is gone
And there's nothing cold as ashes, after the fire is gone

Nelson, Willie After The Fire Is Gone Comments
The BEST version, by so ..........far👍
best version of that song,
It is the ending that sets this version apart from all others. Wow!
Her voice is so powerful.
This is the best musical arrangement of the song I've ever heard. It's extremely hard to beat Daryle Singletary and Rhonda Vincent's version of this song, but dang this beat and those guitar licks are just so perfect.
ditto that
I like this rendition best of all.
I live near Madison WI now. found out Steve Miller and Tracy were quite an item but their music tastes differred. Love her voice.
You mean Steve Miller of the Steve Miller Band fame? That may sound like a silly question, but I assure you, it's anything but.
This is my favorite version of this song.
I got stoned with Willie.
who hasn't?
First heard Tracy when she was with Mother Earth. Bought this album sometime in the 70's, and later when I moved to Wisconsin discovered she and Steve Miller were an item at UW Madison. Their music took different directions. Wow. What a voice.
This is definitely the best version of this song.
I saw Tracy last night in Berkeley with three other brilliant women blues singers: https://www.thefreight.org/event/1706947-blues-broads-berkeley/
I heard the duet with Willie Nelson today for the first time wow what a talent now I have to go out and buy her stuff!
Conway Does it Better still good tho
lewis griffin no
Any chance you could post the "B" side of this 45-"Whiskey River" . That song is up everywhere but not the duet with Tracey Nelson. Would love to hear it again!! Thanks, Dave in Seattle
A jem that the cares of life took away after my second divorce
Two great voices, God bless them!!!!!!!!
Well done!
Love, love, love this song!!!
So do I!
She and Steve Miller were an item up here in Wisconsin, at the UW... her idea of "blues" and his differed so he went to CA and she went to Nashville. So?
Actually, she went to CA too--before she went to Nashville.
This is the real killer version. Leaves Conway & Loretta for dead on this song. And I love C & L.
ozus flyer not even Conway Twitty's version went platinum it was by far better
My sentiments exactly! Though these two are the only versions I've heard of this, I think I'd like this rendition, were I to listen to 5,000 of them! BTW, Willie and Tracy Nelson AREN'T related, and the Tracy Nelson who is the late Rick Nelson's daughter is a completely different person.
@Gary Kerns I like most versions but none of them can hold a candle to this one!!
Trace Adkins and Terri Clark did a pretty good job of this, but you're right, no other CAN hold a candle to this one.
Yep, no doubt
I heard, a long time ago, a duet by Willie and Tracy: Boney Fingers. Do you have that??
Thanks,
Louis Osteen
Actually it was Hoyt Axton backed up with Renee Armand.
nice song love it
It´s a very good song and a very good singer, Tracy Nelson. I'm listening at work in Brazil.
What albums was this song on? I can't find out.
No, I think I'm wrong on that......could be just the "Tracy Nelson" album......dark cover with a picture of her looking at you straight on.......It was the first time I heard Willie Nelson.....went out and bought Shotgun Willie....
I have the Shotgun Willie album and love it, another great album is Phases and Stages. I was just wondering if there were ever any Willie Nelson albums with this song on it.
@TheJcbvickers It's on an album entitled "TRACY NELSON"...1974 Atlantic Recording Corp., New York. other songs are Slow Fall, Love Has No Pride, Hold An Old Friend's Hand, Rock Me In Your Cradle, It Takes A Lot To Laugh, It Takes A Train To Cry, Lean On Me, I Wish Someone Would Care, Lay Me Down Easy, Down So Low.......fabulous record. I also have a Mother Earth album. The short clip of them playing in the shed, or something, that I found on youtube is fabulous. Mother Earth must have been forming then. Did you see it?
@TheJcbvickers It was funny.......I just moved to Charlottesville, VA and was listening to the radio station out of Fredricksburg, VA, and heard the duet of Tracy and Willie......not knowing who the male was.......bought Tracy's album and sure enough, Willie Nelson, the second voice. Then came Shotgun Willie, and Stages and Phases.....loved it......
Kids these days will never appreciate or even hear this music. They listen to country now and it's just plain pop music.
My goddess. I could enjoy her performances every day of the year.
Tracy continues to perform, recently in the Bay Area with the Blues Broads. Her voice is still strong and beautiful, maybe a bit lower in register. She is fantastic!
Tracy's my favorite singer. I used to see her perform in San Francisco every year for years. She would be introduced as "the best singer in the World" and the audience would stand up and scream!
have the Tracy Nelson vinyl of this album...damn i love this! simple and perfect!!
listening to this amazing album tonight during a heavy wind storm!!!
Great song
agree this version is hard to beat!! ...still the best with that reggie young guitar!
I first heard this on a C&W station in Chicago (WJJD). After nearly 40 years, I remember the DJ saying that this was the greatest C&W performance he ever heard. My vote goes to Blue Moon of Kentucky by Bill Monroe, but this is second!
I've lived in West Virginia all my life, but would listen to both WJJD and its competitor, WMAQ. Both frequencies (WJJD 1160 and WMAQ 670) have different call letters now, but for a short while both frequencies were CBS-owned.
Another thing, WJJD would have to sign off at Chicago sunset, as they had to yield the frequency to KSL in Salt Lake City.
she is great. Her recordings with Mother Earth are incredible
Best version ever of this song, I never understood why Conway & Lorettas version was the hit, Willie & tracy sound more convincing
I agree. No disrespect for any other artists but these two outdo them all!!
When I first heard this in 1974, my jaw dropped to the floor!
saw this on Austin City Limits in 74. Blew me away!
I was Lind Ronstadt fan ("Different Drum," from Stone Ponies days) - but after the first time I heard Tracy Nelson sing 'Love Has No Pride,' Linda started seeming like a soulless teenager. It's like being a Clapton/Beck/Paige/Bloomfield fan - and then you hear Roy Buchanan do "Sweet Dreams" live for the first time.
Conway and Loretta do it good but Willie and Tracy absolutely killed this one! Wow that was great!
You're right about that, as long as she can sing, the fire's going no where. Willy and Tracy aren't related, just singing friends.
We're all related..
I watched it too, and that was the first time I actually seenn her sing.
@BeckyTMKZ
I saw Tracy Nelson for the first time last nite on Pop Goes the Country. I was blown away by her singing. Man how did I ever miss hearing her? I am definately going to find her albums. Beyond belief.
I am a fan of both Conway and Loretta, and liked the version of this song they did. However, this one has a drive about, and passionate sound that I like better. And I absolutley love Willie. His voice.... well, it just gets to me. He and Tracy blend so well together. She has a strong voice and can belt out a song better than anyone.
@tamspeci They're not related.
They also sang it in Honeysuckle Rose.
This was the first Willie Nelson song I remember hearing on radio, back in '74, but one thing I don't know, are Willie & Tracy related? I tried Wikipedia but they didn't say.
David Elliott No. I talked to Tracy about this.
@myrttinwilt Some yrs ago the NYT compared her to Joplin, Janis, that is, not Scott.
Do you call 50 bucks moderate? I don't think so!! Rhino Handmade should make it available again.
As long as Tracy Nelson can sing, nobody needs to worry about the fire going anywhere.
If you ever really get the blues - this is one of the best songs to get you to the other side!
Tracy Nelson is a hugely underrated GODDESS.
LInda's voice is not all that prominent on the track (it truly is a back up vocal), but you can hear her harmony line in the song's closing seconds.
Linda and Tracy did an actual duet on Earl Scruggs' classic LP I SAW THE LIGHT W/ A LITTLE HELP FROM MY FRIENDS. That's one even fans of either singer don't tend to know about. Are you familiar w/ it?
I totally agree. But I didn't know about Ronstadt.
Actually, I'm not saying that YOU were claiming it was OP, but rather clarifying the status of the Tracy Nelson record on which the song first appeared. And, yes, it is also available on the Willie CD as well. As far as your service goes, I'm sure it's a welcome for those trying to find OP materials--as well as for the artists and songwriters who must be glad that their OP stuff is still bringing in royalties and gaining them recognition.
Get your facts straight. I didnt say all songs were out of print. Just said we have some. This song can als on be located on Willie Nelson's CD
BTW, that's Linda Ronstadt on background vocals.
The CD on which this tune originally appeared, the 1974 self-titled TRACY NELSON is NOT out of print. It can be readily found online at all the usual venues, and it's moderately priced.
