Nelson, Ricky - Big Chief Buffalo Nickel (Desert Blues) Lyrics

A way out on the wind swept desert
Where nature favours no man
A buffalo found his brother
Lying baked on the sun baked sand
He said: My brother what ails you
Has sickness made you this way
His brother never said
'Cause his brother was dead
He'd been dead since way last May

Big chief buffalo nickel
was a mighty man in his day
He never used a syckle
To clear the bushes away
He roamed around from tent to tent
Heed everything in sight
He loved his squaw, everyone he saw
He loved a new one every night

A way out on the wind swept desert
I heard a big indian moan
I left my tent, 'cause I knew what it meant
I swore I never more would roam
It was dawn when I reached Saint Pete
My legs were certainly sore
I must have lost fifty pounds
On that hot desert ground
And I'd lose that many more

Big chief buffalo nickel
was a mighty man in his day
He never used a syckle
To clear the bushes away
He roamed around from tent to tent
Heed everything in sight
He loved his squaw, everyone he saw
He loved a new one every night

This would not be allowed on the radio today, so insulting to Native Americans. Historical value only to show what assholes we have been.

It was a combination of several Indian Chiefs, the ones i recollect, are Iron Tail and Two Moons.... My most favorite nickel ever.. I have artistic coin reliefs that i make.. I make the coins from clay, then mold them... It takes an average of about 2-3 days to produce a coin in stages... I have videos of many different variations YouTube 'Coins Americana' and 'Patriot Pennies'

Not a bad song. But it would be better without so much dobro and a little fiddle and steel instead.

  11. N.... ....

  12. T.... ....

@Thearl - I meant it was composite of THREE separate faces.

  13. T.... ....

Thanks for the post. Did you know that the Indian face on this nickel was actually a compact of two seperate faces?

  14. e.... p....

in 1955 you could have bought a Large Snickers bar, or coke a cola at the fountain, or road the IRT subway to Ebbets Field in Brooklyn

  15. i.... ....

I don't know who's putting these videos on line but I just want to say Thank You. I used to have all of Rick Nelsons albums and 45s and these bring back alot of great memories.

  19. l.... ....

I used to love this song when I was kid!!!!!

  20. T.... ....

I don't think Rick Nelson really meant to make a political statement in this song.

  21. l.... ....

    And perpetrating terrorism!

  22. l.... ....

Are you out of your freaking mind? The Native's here had been killing each other since they first entered the continent! The notion that The Natives were all peaceful and happy before the white man came along is a naive myth.

    l.... ....

    Old comment, but, well said!

  23. e.... p....

Who need the way of the White man? He only brings War disease and mistrust for his fellow man. Just think of how free these people were until the arrival of the American Good Guys.

  24. e.... p....

we took all their land and there way of life and like every thing else we do shove our way down somebodys else's throat.

  25. H.... D....

    it's a very good song.
