Weeks turned into months, and then months turned into years. Years turned into decades, then centuries, and during all that time Azariel watched, alone, from the top of the tower she had raised to serve as a beacon for any wayward survivors of the Exodus. With every passing winter, hope began to fade from her heart, little by little. It was the hope that others beyond her had survived, perhaps in hiding, perhaps beyond the world itself. It was the hope that she was not the last of her kind, that her race was doomed to extinction because of betrayal. It was the hope that she was not going to be alone for all of time.

When, at last, the final flicker of that hopeful flame faded, Azariel sank to her knees atop that dizzying spire, and wept silently while hellish winds tore all around her. Her thoughts turned to death, death for herself. Death would be forever denied her; she would never know relief from her pain. Azariel would have to exist for eternity on the other side of an imperceptible veil, through which lay all her family, all her friends, and all the people she had ever cared about. She would throw herself wholly into her new role as protector for the mortal survivors of the Exodus, but her shattered heart could never be in it. The mortals would be born, grow up, live, and die, all in front of her, and she would witness this heartless cycle over and over, and no matter how hard Azariel would try not to, she would invariably become attached to these people.

Such was to be another facet of her curse. It was unimaginably cruel that she should have to live such a life knowing that at the end of her eternity is unending madness.

As I gaze into the sunset, I see my life as it should have been. I see a world where everyone would be able to last alongside me... my friends, my family... All of which are gone. I feel them, waiting for me to join them in other life, a life I shall never be able to experience, for I chose this path of Immortality.
