Just FYI. I'm pretty sure the lyric is "Be Love" not "be loved" I mean he has a tattoo that literally says "be love" and I've also heard it played in concert and it definitely sounds like "be love"

The reason it is called 5/6 is definitely the time signature. The point is that in the verse he switches between 5/8 and 6/8 and 9/8 so the timing catches you and you cannot DANCE to it. Then in the chorus "give it all away" he then switches to the 6/6 timing that you can dance away to without feeling tripped up. It is extremely clever interplay between tune and lyric. The guy is a great musician.

This was the song that got me into Jason Mraz properly (along with The Freedom Song and, later, Make It Mine). I'd only really heard I'm Yours and I Won't Give Up before my wife bought this album for us, and was convinced he was just a twee, safe Christian-With-A-Guitar who only wrote cringeworthy well-intentioned fluff. Some of his work approaches that description, but as I've listened to this album and We Sing etc, I've come to really love and respect the guy's musical ability. Yes! was disappointing, though...

Why 5/6 ?
It's called 5/6 because that's the time signature that comes up throughout the song. (mostly a mix of 5/6 and 6/6, if I recall)

5/6 represents the choice we do everytime, between bad and good...
The pentagram being the devil's symbol is a pretty recent concoction, used to vilify paganism. Having read all of Jason's blogs up till about 2012 I don't see him thinking the pentagram represents "bad" in any way. In fact I would imagine he would see the pentagram as being the female symbol; venus draws a 5-pointed in the night sky (with relation to the Earth) over the course of its orbit.

This is just a guess but I assume its because the song's time meter is in 5/6. Not 4/4 like traditional pop and rock.

That's because during the verses, it goes from 6/8 to 3/8 to 5/8 to 6/8. It does that three times in a row, then the last time the 5/8 is replaced with 6/8. The choruses are all 6/8. And @diemuffinmann it's more common practice to right it out in the smaller chunks like that. I sat down and spent some time writing out things about the song, it's actually surprisingly complicated, with odd 11 bar phrases and such for some of the choruses.
It's because of the time signature which switches back and forth between being in 5/8 and 6/8 every other measure. Even knowing that though, I still find it difficult to count along during the verses.
