I was 16, didn’t know anything about Glam rock. But I guess I did, but didn’t know it, because Ziggy and the Spiders were my beast friends at the time. I would dance in my room when this song came on and sing with my terrible voice as loud as I could. Being a kid was great!

I thought I kept up with their history pretty good, I don't remember him ever being out of the band. Maybe this is like in 1964 when Ringo was sick with tonsils, and some guy named Jimmy had to play the drums for the Beatles somewhere for a minute.

I think the answer to the Audience being in a Coma is that this performance was acted and the music put in later at a Studio, it is too hard to imagine people sat there stony faced with actual music being played
