A lot of people are saying this song is about cultural appropriation, but I personally think it’s more about colonialism itself, like, the actual historical period when colonizers came in and destroyed all these different cultures. The lines about being a piranha, being a bull in a china shop, make me think this song is written from the point of view of a colonizer as he decimates this culture and steals the things he likes about it while erasing everything else. There’s also the lines “we make a child out of your culture, it got no culture”, which make me think of the half-native children who were born after colonizers raped their native mothers, and were born into a world where their mothers’ culture has been stolen and commodified. I don’t know, that interpretation makes this song more interesting to me.

i love this song. my interpretation of the lyrics would be rejecting the harmful culture one has grown up in in order to create something better with other people, even though still being influenced by their past experiences.

Eh, I feel the need to say I refuse to believe these lyrics are JUST about basic cultural appropriation. If they are, these are the most boring, preachy lyrics I've ever seen. But luckily I don't think the message is really that simple. Supposedly Mother Mother had a lot of critics saying they were unoriginal with their pop sound and were just stealing aspects of other popular music. I read somewhere that this song was a joyful response to that criticism, kinda mocking the critics, with the message actually being "We may be unoriginal, but screw it, we're having fun." Now lines like "Knocking off a knock-off" and "we make a child outta your culture" make a HECK of a lot more sense, to me at least, and I love this song SO much more taking it as a mockery of everyone who judges it.

OR I could be wrong as heck, but I hope not. Either way, no lyrics can ruin this awesome music and AWESOMER drums, like holy heck.

Could be both. Probably both. Though if critics have claimed that Mother Mother isn't original, they're fucking wrong. I can pick up hints of influence across many genres and decades, but that's the same with ANY band. Everything is a product of influences from other music in our society, and the good stuff just has a generous dash of originality added to it. No one creates music having never heard any, before. It's all part of a human tradition which has built on musical theory, notation, instruments, vocal training, etc, throughout history.

this song is kinda... parts of it are relatable. all my grandparents are immigrants from different countries but my parents didn't pass down any traditions or languages. so when I meet people who have this personal connection to their heritage it makes me feel like I have something missing. I've got no culture. so that's what this song means to me. even if I claimed a culture it wouldn't actually be mine.
