Morissette, Alanis - Joining You Lyrics

dear dar(lin') your mom (my friend) left a message on my machine she was frantic
saying you were talking crazy that you wanted to do away with yourself
I guess she thought i'd be a perfect resort because we've had
this inexplicable connection since our youth and yes they're in shock
they are panicked you and your chronic them and their drama
you this embarrassment us in the middle of this delusion
if we were our bodies
if we were our futures
if we were our defenses i'd be joining you
if we were our culture
if we were our leaders
if we were our denials i'd be joining you
I remember vividly a day years ago we were camping you knew more than you thought you should know
you said "I don't want ever to be brainwashed" and you were mindboggling you were intense
you were uncomfortable in your own skin you were thirsty but mostly you were beautiful
if we were our nametags
if we were our rejections
if we were our outcomes i'd be joining you
if we were our indignities
if we were our successes
if we were our emotions i'd be joining you
you and I we're like 4 year olds we want to know why and how come about everything
we want to reveal ourselves at will and speak our minds and never talk small and be intuitive
and question mightily and find god my tortured beacon
we need to find like-minded companions
if we were their condemnations
if we were their projections
if we were our paranoias i'd be joining you
if we were our incomes
if we were our obsession
if we were our afflictions i'd be joining you
we need reflection we need a really good memory feel free to call me a little more often

No plot twists with this childe - most of her early output refers to her own existence

Please read her poignant lyrics to this song. Unpretentious and absolutely real. How I love this woman’s honesty in her music.

  19. F.... B....

This piece is absolutely outstanding, I have always heard it as a voice of the 2000 generation, one of the few examples in which rock music fully achieves musicality.

  20. a.... m....

"Joining You" es una canción de Alanis Morissette que escribió junto a Glen Ballard, perteneciente al cuarto álbum de Morissette Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie. Fue lanzado como segundo sencillo del álbum a principio de 1999.

  26. h.... ....

This is one of the most profound songs in the last 20 years. If you can make the connection of what Alanis is singing about here, it knocks you on your ass. Wow .. just wow.

    h.... ....

    What's it about?

  28. R.... E....

Can't believe this song didn't get more attention.

    R.... E....

i was thinking exactly the same

    R.... E....

I think it's one of her most powerful songs, but I think the softer music in the unplugged version allows the lyrics to be showcased better.

    R.... E....

Completely mental, isn't it? One of the finest songs of the century.

    R.... E....

    it deserves way more attention

  29. a.... ....

What a cool song. I love how idiosyncratic the chord progressions are in this. Gives it a really off-kilter chromatic vibe. Good stuff.

  30. v.... ....

    Winter 1998

  31. D.... L....

traduzida essa música é muito boa....

  32. B.... ....

7 april 2015 - my song of the day

  33. A.... ....

    Sweet projection, sweet assumption

This is almost better than it felt in the 90s

  34. n.... ....

"Suicide" (as below) is too obvious. JY is about falling down into (and for) The Trance. I suppose it's =actually= fair to assert that Alanis's entire body of work from '95 through '08 is about Waking Up from what Charles Tart called the "concensus trance." Most of us are sleep walking. A few are not. We call them "folk punks" nowadays.

    n.... ....

    naughtmoses what?

    n.... ....

    Google "consensus trance."

  35. D.... ....

    this song is crazy!!

  36. J.... V....

Ahhhhh me colgué escuchando temas de Alanis, hace mucho que no la escuchaba, y lo ultimo no me parece lo mejor de ella, pero mierda que me la flasheaba con ella. Lejos siempre en mi corazón musical

  37. K.... ....

    pour david

  38. l.... ....

Nowadays she should change a line to "If we were Facebook posts I'd be joining you!" Lol One of my favorite songs ever!!

  39. A.... ....

This and other songs from Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie started playing in my head a couple of days ago seemingly out of nowhere, even though I haven't listened to the album in at least ten years. Guess it´s a testament to the power of music. Jagged Little Pill was the first album ever I went completely nuts over, but now I actually think SFIJ is Alanis' best work. She will always have a special place in my musical landscape. Alanis is truly one of a kind...oh, and what a gorgeous pic!

  40. l.... ....

I listen to this song at least once a week and it loses nothing.

  41. l.... ....

woke up this morning with this song in my head, havent heard this in such a loooooooooooooooong time!! thank you, the morning of July 29th, 2013 <3 :D

  42. d.... i....

I like the more this is music.......beautiful....

  43. F.... E....

Such a profound song. We are so much defined by our jobs, our place in society, etc., that when we no longer fit those definitions, we feel lost. The song is a good reminder to not be defined in the entirety of our being by these transient things.

  44. H.... ....

    Spot on.

  45. H.... ....

God this song hits home so hard. One of my faves <3

  46. C.... R....

    I looooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooove it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  47. K.... ....

I used to sing this all day all night it's just one of her most beatifully written and sang songs ever... Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie got a lot less recognision than it deserved

  48. J.... S....

    maybe her most intense song

  49. R.... M....

    ...love it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  50. L.... ....

it means we are far more than we think - and others think. Remember that when you find yourself being judged by others and labelled. Don't ever give up. And no, Tyreese Ellis, it doesn't just apply to white people, it applies to everyone.

  51. R.... T....

Você é foda mesmo!!!. Canta muito....

  52. F.... ....

It takes some reading ability to find it but this song DOES have a message of hope... because "IF we were.... I'd be joining you"... but that means WE are not our leaders etc... WE are ourselves and have to go on.
    Let's never forget this...

  53. r.... e....

wtf lol only white people man

  54. s.... r....

    muy buena

  55. s.... r....

    great song

  56. i.... ....

What kind of shit is that?

  57. m.... b....

    so powerful !

  58. Y.... ....

This song is about suicide. Her friend wanted to end his life and she is so beautifully thru this song telling him....that If they were all those things that she sings about...she would probably join him...but at the same time, he helps him realize that we are much more than our conditioning and the things we are led to belief! Wake up humanity and let the love shine thru! Thank you Alanis, love you

    Y.... ....

Yggdrasil beautifully said. Anyone who has experienced extreme pain would empathise with these lyrics and understand their power.

  59. D.... ....

She relates to real things that people dealt with at that time, which happens be the same sh*t that we deal with today...

  60. e.... ....

Yeah makes me feel a lot better when I feel down and worthless. Very intense!

  61. P.... C....

Alanis is and has always been COOL. love ya Alanis from Sweden and you have a son, cool mother awards go to Alanis. (and Björk)

  62. d.... f....

Unplugged version is better but i like also this

  63. n.... ....

@NegroDeSangue The same with I Was Hoping!

  64. l.... t....

@Allocator2008 yes thats what i love about Alanis and her music....she sings about things that makes us human...all of her songs makes us think...makes us think about ourselves and makes us think about other people...wish there was more singers like her around now...so sick of these pop/rap starts that sing bout the same damn thing all the time...we need more Alanis's in the music industry

  65. F.... E....

@79lucatoni It is about the question of "what is Dasein" - that is, what really makes person. "Dasein" was a philosopher named Heidegger's term for what a person is, and that is the whole question - are we just our social situations, our jobs, our circle of friends, etc., or is the question of what makes us as human beings deeper than that? What is it to be human? Is it our social connections, or is it something deeper? The song asks the question, but leaves the answer to think for ourselves.

  66. F.... E....

This song raises the preternal question: what is Dasein? Well, I don't know. But I am glad somebody is raising the question.

  67. g.... ....

    great vibe on this tune.

  68. N.... ....

I like the unplugged version much better. She sang the hell outta this song.

  69. R.... B....

    <3333333

  70. l.... t....

@RSAdiemus oh yr english is perfect :) wow! now that i know what the song's about, i love it even more! leave it up to Alanis to take such a deep subject and project it into such an amazing song.

  71. l.... t....

1 of my favorite alanis songs! BUT whats this song about??

  72. n.... ....

Over-identifying with your ideas? Ooooo. Not good.

  73. m.... ....

splendido turbinio di suoni .....splendido testo........splendida alanis.

  74. C.... A....

    Fantastic woman, fantastic singer! :)

  75. Y.... ....

Oh my god, now i fully understand this song! I love you so much Alanis, thank you !

  76. b.... ....

I realize Alanis's music was designed for alternative radio but how did this song NOT make the AOR (album oriented rock) charts? Why just the modern rock charts? This song is as heavy as "You Oughta Know" (#3 AOR hit for Alanis) and it's way heavier than "Hand In My Pocket" which was a Top 10 AOR hit.

  77. R.... ....

I effin love this song! <3

  78. s.... ....

It took me years to find this song again. It still makes me awfully sad but full of hope.

  79. R.... R....

    great song!

  80. b.... ....

My girl Cecilie loves it to... Makes me wonder???

    The Bull

  81. V.... N....

    It makes me cry.
    I love it :D
