Montgomery Gentry - Something To Be Proud Of Lyrics
There's a story that my daddy tells religiously
Like clockwork every time he sees an opening
In a conversation about the way things used to be
Well I'd just roll my eyes and make a bee-line for the door
But I'd always end up starry-eyed, cross-legged on the floor
Man, the things I heard
It was harder times and longer days
Five miles to school, uphill both ways
We were cane switch raised, and dirt floor poor
'Course that was back before the war
Yeah, your uncle and I made quite a pair
Flying F-15's through hostile air
He went down but they missed me by a hair
He'd always stop right there and say...
That's something to be proud of
That's a life you can hang your hat on
That's a chin held high as the tears fall down
A gut sucked in, a chest stuck out
Like a small town flag a-flyin'
Or a newborn baby cryin'
In the arms of the woman that you love
That's something to be proud of
Son graduatin' college, that was mama's dream
But I was on my way to anywhere else when I turned 18
Cuz when you gotta fast car you think you've got everything
I learned quick those GTO's don't run on faith
I ended up broken down in some town north of L.A.
Working maximum hours for minimum wage
Well, I fell in love, next thing I know
The babies came, the car got sold
I sure do miss that old hot rod
But you sure save gas in them foreign jobs
Dad, I wonder if I ever let you down
If you're ashamed how I turned out
Well, he lowered his voice, then he raised his brow
Said, lemme tell ya right now
That's something to be proud of
That's a life you can hang your hat on
You don't need to make a million
Just be thankful to be workin'
If you're doing what you're able
And putting food there on the table
And providing for the family that you love
That's something to be proud of
And if all you ever really do is the best you can
Well, you did it man
That's something to be proud of
That's a life you can hang your hat on
That's a chin held high as the tears fall down
A gut sucked in, a chest stuck out
Like a small town flag a-flyin'
Or a newborn baby cryin'
In the arms of the woman that you love
That's something to be proud of
That's something to be proud of
Yeah, that's something to be proud of
That's something to be proud of
Now that's something to be proud of

Montgomery Gentry Something To Be Proud Of Comments
I listened to this all the time in growing up in 2007. 10 years after that, I heard that Troy had died. And that tore apart my insides considering that I heard this song ever since I was 3 1/2. Now I’m just getting back into this. It’s worth all of it. Thank you, Montgomery Gentry. Especially you, Troy. Rest easy up there. 🙏
i some times think i hope my father is proud of me raising two step daughters and a son to be good people .
Miss you man. Love E

Here y'all go
This is a song that a lot of folks say listen to. As long as you can do whatever it takes, as long as you put food on your table then that how it should be.
I’ve been on an old country music binge lately and I have been obsessed with this song. Listen to it at least once a day. So good
When I hear the part “you don’t need to make a million just be thankful to be working” it makes chills go up my spine because it shows that as long as your trying that’s all that matters!
Fuck yeah it's something to be proud of.
Still such An Amazing song!!!!♡♡♡
My Grandfather escaped a father who wouldnt let him go to Junior High in Italy to come to America legally and learn a trade and put 8 kids through college. That's something to be proud of.
Me and my dad in f15
No u don't u r lying they don't let people with that accent in a billion dollar plane

Troy.See ya in heaven someday brother.
Anyone in 2020?
song never gets old everytime i hear it. hits me in my heart. takes me back to my childhood.
Fact: No American F-15 has ever been shot down by enemy fire.
According to official releases from Boeing and the U.S. Air Force, the F-15 Eagle has a clear-cut win-to-loss ratio of 104 to zero.
shane willis f-4 didn’t sound right. Lol
Damn straight this is America
I hope your proud of me dad. Trying my best to straighten everything out and please dad. Just say I was worth being born and I am not a f**k up anymore.
Luke Baer hows it going brother?
@Dane Wilson I just feel like the black sheep of the family, wondering if I was even worth being born. I don't make a lot of money, and don't have any children. That is all my dad talks about, the very few times he actually does talk to me. But you have no idea how much that means to me, that someone actually cared enough to respond to a comment of mine! I just keep on going, hoping the next day will be better than today
Luke Baer nobody is not worth being born, you can always turn your life around if you have the determination. And it sounds like you’ve got it. So good luck and I’ll be praying for you man.
You were NEVER a eff up, you're getting your second wind. You will show everyone how its done. Lead by example.
This reminds me of the "In the End" by Linkin Park music video

I care, I gave up everything for something I believed in and still do. no regrets. I lost a lot or I guess I gave a lot. same thing. I got my first dear john letter at boot camp. that was fun...……….. thought sarah was the one. she was not. then I found a great woman and married. then phone calls from a privios girl friend from the 70's (yes I am 60) and remote access to my phone got me divorced. wish I would have actually been cheating at that point. found a second girl on the net. she was fun, a nurse, an alcoholic. that went really bad and she passed away. now I am a retired officer living in an ok house in fl with two dumb ass cats and wasting away in Margaritaville.
This music video reminds me of Creed
This song helps give motivation. Im trying to take care of my family the best i can. I dont make alot of money and i have to pawn a lot of my stuff sometimes just to make sure we have money for food. But im doing it..
Not only am i a vet from O.I.F. but O.E.F. too. And im trying my best to support my family. This song helps raise my spirits when i feel down.
Good ole Country! December 9, 2019
Song irks me, flying F15s, he went down but they missed me by a hair -.- No F15 has been shot down by enemy action hahaha
Back in the day of 56 my dad had to walk 5 miles to the bus stop to go to school. In 72 my dad when to Vietnam as a green beret mechanic aka a soldier with other purposes. Then after fucked on by life and in lm 21. He has taught me alot
Iv never felt successful. I grew up poor and never had anything new or nice.
Ended up getting married and having kids.. still felt like a loser. Had to rent my in-laws basement for years because I worked a dead end low paying job..
Somewhere along the line.. I pulled myself together.
13 years later, I am the manager at the gun shop of my dreams. I just bought my first house, and it's amazing so big and nice... like, holy crap, I own THIS!? How did that even happen?!
The sad part is.. I have literally no one to be proud of me. Outside of my wife and children, I have no one. Parents are gone. Siblings are all estranged. In-laws are cunts and I'll never be good enough anyway.
Iv come so damn far, and there is no one to tell me I did good and I so desperately want that approval from a parental figure.
Rant over. You its fine. No oke will read this. Lol
RIP Troy Gentry. I loved y'all's music..and I'm saddened I'll never get to hear you two live again..
I’m big BDK folk nation gang shit I’m proud of that hoe ✡️🔱

So true. If ur putting food on the table for ur family that's something to be proud of
I’m 16 and working my ass off 5 days a week to get certified in construction then I’m gonna get out of highschool and my plan is to go in the army but if I can’t I’m going to work my ass off to get higher training in construction. I can speak for some people who are different and learn slow I got called stupid in 3rd grade everyday by a teacher her name was Mrs.dufflamb she told me I would never amount to anything in my life her own words were “you’ll be washing tables at McDonald’s for the rest of your life because your too stupid to do anything” that flies over my mind and those thoughts pop in my head of what she has said to me and I some days I actually think that and all I want to do is prove her wrong and flip her the bird and say look at me I’m doing better then what you are and I actually like my job I try every single day as hard as I can and try to think past all of those thoughts and try to make my dad proud of what I’m doing and what I’m trying for. For anybody who’s ever had someone tell you anything like you can’t do it your not smart enough your not strong enough don’t listen to them you laugh at them and prove them wrong and make them feel like shit for saying it. I’m 16 I am getting certified in construction I have my 10 hour osha safety card and I’m gonna go back to that lady and spit at her feet and say “thought I was gonna be washing tables? I’m certified in construction, I make more then you and I hope you feel like shit for looking down upon me and blowing out my self esteem” and that’s all the words I have for her besides I wanna say I hate her but I won’t go to her dirty level

Damn, I totally forgot about this duo. This was back when I first started listening to country music, and I'm glad I started listening during the right decade. 2000s was the best decade of modern country, with amazing acts like Carrie Underwood, Brad Paisley, Billy Currington, Toby Keith, Kenny Chesney, and more bringing their A-game. Mainstream country doesn't even care to promote acts like this anymore, and it seems like country radio plays the generic Luke Bryan and Florida Georgia Line copypasted music every damn hour these days.
"me and my dad flew f 15s" no they didn't they would never let a southern accent into that multi-million dollar aircraft
Man, what a song, even now, when this band is sadly no more, It is still strikingly good and relatable, way to go guys
Rest in peace T.Roy!!!
We Love you very much!
More people need to hear this song. 15 mil ain't enough.

💯💖
Old song, what a gem!
Rest In Peace Troy.
I heard this song on Pandora and instantly fell in love with it. Then I looked up more info on the group only to find one of the members died, and the surviving member has had one hell of a life- prostate cancer, losing a son to addiction, etc. Now I'm depressed. This is still a great song, though. I hope Mr. Montgomery keeps up the great work in the spirit of the incredible musical duo that once was.
This is a good song

I love this song better then horses on the back
Making all of these beautiful songs. Now, that’s something to be proud of.
I'm a struggling dad of one of my own and 4of significant others. we get by but struggle but two songs come to mind in hard times and it's this one and back yard lullaby. I work two jobs plus side work but it's worth it for them
thats some thing to be proud of all the time and there is always something to be proud of
So his uncle was shot down? If so solute to the man who has lost his life for us
It's a song....its not real lol 😂😂
@Clementine? no you are wrong, most songs are true back storys or related, for example, Luke Bryan wrote a song sit right here on the edge of this peer, watch the sunset disepear, and drink a beer is in memory of his brother in law, sister and brother who all passed away in like a 6 month period
No American F-15 has ever been shot down by enemy fire.
My heart still breaks whenever I hear one of their songs...
Same. I can't imagine how much Montgomery must hurt all time.
Older people should be thankful for the golden America that they got to live in. Thanks for sucking it all up.
although in their defense, some of them did believe that they were doing what was best for their kids.
Shay Pewe I’m sure they thought they were doing what’s best, and most are good people. But a lot are selfish and inconsiderate.
@CHARLIE D true to a fault.
We need more like you around right now Troy. RIP
he's dead?
Merica yupp. Proud and thankful for this life here in the USA 🇺🇸

The only real "pride" that matters
Hey man, people can be proud of whatever they like, long as they ain’t hurting anyone with it. This matters, but other stuff does too.
