Monkees, The - (Theme From) The Monkees Lyrics

Here we come, walkin'
Down the street
We get the funniest looks from
Ev'ry one we meet
Hey, hey, we're the Monkees
And people say we monkey around
But we're too busy singing
To put anybody down

We go wherever we want to do
What we like to do
We don't have time to get restless
There's always something new
Hey, hey, we're the Monkees
And people say we monkey around
But we're too busy singing
To put anybody down

We're just tryin' to be friendly
Come and watch us sing and play
We're the young generation
And we've got something to say

Any time, Or anywhere
Just look over your shoulder
Guess who'll be standing there

Hey, hey, we're the Monkees
And people say we monkey around
But we're too busy singing
To put anybody down

[break]

Hey, hey, we're the Monkees
And people say we monkey around
But we're too busy singing
To put anybody down

We're just tryin' to be friendly
Come and watch us sing and play
We're the young generation
And we've got something to say

Hey, hey, we're the Monkees
Hey, hey, we're the Monkees
[repeat and fade]

[Extra verse:]
Hey, hey, we're the Monkees
You never know where we'll be found
So you'd better get ready
We may be comin' to your town

I remember when I became a fan of The Monkees. August 2012, I was 12 years old. My dad bought me one of their greatest hits CD’s, and I was hooked. Davy had recently passed a few months earlier in February, and I thought it was so terrible. This morning, I found the news that Peter had died. I didn’t know WHAT to think or say, nor did my brother. I was also immediately took back to the day my dad bought me the CD. Things like that you never forget.
RIP Davy Jones & Peter Tork.
Thank you for the music and memories.

    A.... n....

I have almost the exact same story as you, I became a fan in 2012 when I was 11 years old. I saw them on a local TV station and I became obsessed with them.. When Peter died it was like a family member dying because I had gotten so close to them. I'm glad to see someone else with a similar story :)

  39. M.... D....

    2 gone. R. I. P.

  40. S.... W....

Rest in peace Peter, you had a long and good ride.

  41. A.... M....

  51. C.... S....

I can’t believe that an old friend of mine used to play guitar with Davey Jones I always thought Shin Dig was full of crap but Roger is gone now probably playing up in heaven with him and a few others

  52. 7.... ....

Don Lemon better not here this song he will think it's Racist

  53. a.... ....

    This song is now racist!

  54. I.... A....

If they have something to say, they can say it. Jeez.

  55. 2.... ....

Kurt Cobain watched this! (The show)

  56. J.... T....

This was Kurt Cobain's favorite song as a kid!

  57. a.... ....

This sounds like Simon & Garfunkel crushed into the Kinks.

  58. c.... t....

    I love this

  59. b.... ....

The studio musicians they got to do these songs were top notch; list to the tight playing, especially at the guitar break in the middle.  Very well composed guitar parts and great playing.  ..... And it sounds like a stand-up bass was used...great choice as it drives the rhythm so well.

  60. s.... t....

Im i the only 14 year old here

    s.... t....

Nope, old music is also starting to become a trend with younger demographics.

  61. Q.... S....

  64. L.... H....

    MY SWEETHEARTS!!!

  65. J.... R....

It has been a very long time since I heard this. This is still great

  66. B.... ....

Song reminds me.  I wanted my older cousin who was 16 and a total fox, and she loved the Monkees, then so did I.  And we would dance together all the Monkees' songs.  Quite a few good tunes actually.

  67. R.... T....

Neil Diamond wrote all of the Monkees music and the Monkees didn't really play instruments but I still love them anyways. Mike Nesmith is my favorite

    R.... T....

Neil Diamond wrote a few of their hits like I'm A believer and A little bit me and a little bit you, also Boyce and Hart who wrote the theme song and last train to Clarksville, also Carol King and Geoffry Gofffin who wrote Pleasant Valley Sunday. They had a whole stable of writers writing for them.

    R.... T....

    Ride the lightning----Not even close.

  68. J.... C....

Had to hum this song playing Cranium last night. Immediately failed cuz I was like who tf are the monkees

  84. D.... ....

On the way back from the dentist, I noticed a little thrift store that I'd not known about, so I stopped in - only to find that the operation was devoted entirely to baby clothes. The rule at community-based thrift shops, of course, is that you have to buy something, even if you're clearly outside the target demographic. I was beginning to feel desperate when I caught sight of four CD's on a shelf in the back - and one of them was "The Monkee's Greatest Hits."

I always thought that flashbacks were just an excuse to make fun of hippies, but those songs caused my brain to regurgitate information laid down in the lower sedimentary layers by my experience of being eight years old. It was a mixed vomit bag, including some calcified artifacts of Monkeemania. My favorite Monkee? Mike, natch. His favorite color? Green. Same as mine.

The listening experience is somewhat different for me now, though. That's a quality package there, a fully-processed musical confection, painstakingly assembled from market-tested components (a glistening chocolaty shell surrounding a creamy nut-based center topped with frothy nougat), and presented with industry-standard professionalism. The complexity of the design and fabrication work involved with this investment opportunity required fairly high-caliber intelligence - so some humor that was not initially obvious ended up embedded in those grooves. I would pay money to view a film of the entire stage show, as long as that footage included the opening act - when it was the Jimi Hendrix Experience.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hUzexePjWlI

I love how the chord structure and the drum punctuation build the tension.

"Here we come, [dit-dit dee, dit-dit dee] ...walkin' down the street, ...we get the funniest looks from, ...everyone we meet." ('Cuz they're just s'darn groovy-lookin' - that's why.)

    Then the exuberant release:

"Hey, hey - we're the Monkees! And people say we're monkeyin' 'round - but we're too busy sangin'* to put anybody down."

*The lyrics, oddly, don't seem to have been specified to be delivered by the cockney midget deployed as the lead singer. Maybe that figure was an afterthought - surrounded by prime specimens of Suburban Teenager as a clever way to address the devastation delivered to America's musical-industrial complex by the British invasion. This whole project may have been something of a rush-job, fueled by a certain amount of panic and desperation. I think Stephen Stills was lined up for the slot filled, sort of, by Peter Tork, but in the end, I guess, he just couldn't fuckin' do it. Trivia question: On what percentage of extant Monkees LP's has the "T" in that surname been turned into a "D"?

And now - back to our show. Several go-rounds build to the climactic moment.

We're just tryin' to be friendly - come 'n' watch us sing 'n' play!
We're the young generation - an' we've got somethin' to say...

OK, at this point we're primed for the payoff profundity. But wait - now for some more masterful mid-decade instrumental tension-building - and then ...here it comes...

"Hey, hey - we're the Monkees!" etc.

  85. L.... G....

I love this show and song one of the best theme music ever

  86. q.... P....
