Modest Mouse - Lives Lyrics
Everyone's afraid of their own life
If you could be anything you want
I bet you'd be disappointed, am I right?
No one really knows the ones they love
If you knew everything they thought
Well, you were the dull sound of sharp math
When you were alive
No ones gonna play the harp when you die
And if I had a nickel for every damn dime
I'd have half the time, do you mind?
Everyone's afraid of their own lives
If you could be anything you want
I bet you'd be disappointed, am I right?
Am I right? And it's our lives
It's hard to remember, it's hard to remember
It's hard to remember were alive for the last time
It's hard to remember, it's hard to remember
To live before you die
It's hard to remember, it's hard to remember
That our lives are such a short time
It's hard to remember, it's hard to remember
When it takes such a long time
It's hard to remember, it's hard to remember:
My mom's God is a woman and my mom she is a witch
I like this
My hell comes from inside, comes from inside myself
Why fight this
Everyone's afraid of their own lives
If you could be anything you want
I bet you'd be disappointed, am I right?

Modest Mouse Lives Comments
"if you knew everything they thought I bet you'd wish they'd just shut up" I got reminded of this line today when I realized how annoyed I am of everyone as soon as I start following them on twitter
I really hate how sad this song makes me. It's so good. Lotta memories. Thank you Isaac.

Love this song
I stumpblrd upon this band two months ago I saw the Dead in 77' Dylan back there as well.. Stones, .. played shows with a thousand well known bands and MM sits with the very few if any that do as much to me. I may never stop playing this album.
YOUR WRONG. I WOULDN'T BE DISAPPOINTED.
GREAT SONGWRITERS OF OUR TIME
These guys have gotten me through some of the most fucked up times in my life
Are these lyrics correct? I've always thought that he says "If you could be anything you want I bet you'd be at this point, am I right?" It makes more sense that way. I mean, why would you be disappointed if you could be anything you want? The way I wrote it above would mean that most people really can't be anything you want and that's why you never became said thing. People do have health, money and education issues that stand in the way of certain (more extreme) career paths.
Yeah, I noticed that as well. However in many cases CD jackets contain incorrect lyrics. I have noticed this with Radiohead, The Deftones, The Smashing Pumpkins, as well as others, and believe it to be one of the countless reasons a lot of bands hate their record labels and even write songs expressing that fact. I'm sure you as well as many others have noticed lyrics in CD books that don't match what you hear. That would actually make a great topic for a video.
100% says, "disappointed."
yep it's disappointed saw it live 100 percent disappointed.
\[Y]/ Praise the sun Awesome! Thanks for the clarification! They put on a great live show.
Disappointed is a hidden message. Dis/appointed. We all are given life for a specific purpose, yet work our entire lives toward the goal of being no longer driven, or appointed by it. He's basically saying that most of us arent driven by purpose, but are running from it instead
I know these lyrics and this song too well but it never gets old
Another monster tune from MM!!!
MA! mauwmmssss god is a woohmaan nd my mauwm she i a witch AH
The fact that not many people know about this phenomenal song is sad but awesome at the same time

i refuse to be told something deep from someone named nipples
I like the guitar part at the beginning, but when it gets to the "Its hard to remember" it gets weak until the ending part, my opinion.
DELETE THIS COMMENT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! YOU ARE ENTITLE TO EVERY OPINION OF YOUR OWN EXCEPT THAT ONE.

"My hell comes from the inside, comes from the inside myself. Why fight this?" My favorite line in all of history
What do you like about 'Why fight this?', First part of the quote encourages responsibility, second one renounces it for no reason.
Vlad Stavarache if his hell comes from inside, he thinks, why would I fight this if it’s from me? Because at that point he would just be fighting himself
dude im so sorry to hear this I have too many friends making shitty choices I cant even imagine if my brother was in their shoes
Hi dear i know this comment was 5 years ago, but im hoping youre doing ok this is a supportive community if you need to talk
too young too go
your bro had amazing taste in music, such a shame there aren't that many people like him out there. If its any consolation...
one of my favorite songs by them..lyrics are amazing
Excellent song
This song really makes you think
The road not taken by Robert Frost
the song also reminds me of how every decision is important and theres at least two ways to view everything so be optimistic and brave and don't stop living your life even if things have been bad or you're afraid. because your life is only one dot in time along w so many others but its yours and to you its long because its all you have so make it right.
This song really makes me question where i am in life. I've been thinking about that a lot because i feel like i could be so much farther along, although i don't regret much because i learned a lot and appreciate my life. i feel like fear of failure held me back from a lot of things that i couldn't figure out at the time.
you said a mouthful rigtht there miss candice swingle. a mouth full. A full mouth. A mouth full of dollars. Hmm...there's a possible Country Western themed bar name...A mouthful of dollars.
I always wished I was someone else specifically my old best friend. she always seems to have it all? good family, finance, lives in a city, and is such a beautiful interesting person. all the things i dont have
Thanks
god damn :(
My greatest condolences to you and your family.
It's fine, don't be sorry. His friends got him drunk so they could trick him into doing heroin. He died in his sleep later on that night.
Don't be sorry? That's fucking crazy man.
Hey dude, shut the fuck up. Music is for listening, not inconsiderate comments. You presume to think that if music doesn't mean anything to you, it doesn't mean anything period? Is your philosophy so shallow that some flowing endorphins from putting down others and feeling "superior" is enough for you to comment a paragraph on a song you think is meaningless? You probably think rhcp sucks too.
One person has no soul.
This was my brother's favorite song.
R.I.P. Chris 1985-2006.
rest in peace Chris
If you don't mind me asking, what took your brother's life?
@Kaitlin Tate I think we can all guess . . .
@McBain breast cancer
But you are right in the sense my personal insults were strictly in response to your obvious attacks on random people over the internet. The power of anonymity brings out the best in people. My comments about yourself held as much weight as yours about the people YOU were insulting. Its all nonsense. And having a concrete opinion on how one should interprete a song or how much something should impact someone is just as silly as the people letting every new idea change their outlook on life.
Well, I, nor anyone, asked you to be concerned with the music each of us like. You also didnt simply express your view about the lyrics not being 'life-changing' (every single thing we experience is 'life-changing', this silly youtube post is 'life-changing'). You rather made it a point to attempt to insult all other comments that talked about how they were impacted by this song, for whatever reason, justifying it with a pseudo-theory about shallow philosophies and easy impressions.
I'M NEVER GOING TO READ THE COMMENTS DURING SUCH GREAT SONGS AGAIN!!!!
Comparing this to a 'really bad' bukowski poem shows your obvious cluelessness about both subjects. Concern yourself less with what people allow influence their lives and worry about letting things other than bitterness, ignorance, and all around ineptitude influence yours. You come across as a douchebag VIA TEXT. I can only imagine the package deal in person.
This is like a drug traveling through sound
@Miche2pointO This world would be a better place if more people like you were in it.
@Guercinator i love this song
@nealeofashow As you're the one making the affirmative suggestion, the burden of proof lies with you. :)
@CaptainCrunchOwns is that not a burden we carry together?
@nealeofashow Burden of proof is on you there.
@CaptainCrunchOwns or maybe hes smarter than you and got more out of it
@CaptainCrunchOwns Sometimes the littlest things can make the biggest difference in a person's life. Perhaps your lack of understanding of the enormous complexity of the spectrum of human emotion has left you ignorant of just how powerful music can be, it affects us at a chemical level, you said so yourself. Don't be a dick and laugh at people's lives being changed by something as simple as a song. Maybe this was all they had when no one else would get their hopes up.
@CaptainCrunchOwns okay, so you are right about some people making a big deal over it, but you must admit that the lyrics in this song are amazing and would take only the brain of a literary genius like Isaac Brock :D
@23skeletor :D
one of my favorite songs of all time. a song that changed the way i think about life.
"no ones going to play the harp when you die"
thank you Modest Mouse.
Love this song . . .
this one reminds me of the Eels
