Mitchell, Joni - Woodstock Lyrics
I came upon a child of God
He was walking along the road
And I asked him, where are you going
And this he told me...
I'm going on down to Yasgur's farm
I'm going to camp out on the land
I'm gonna try and get my soul free
We are stardust
We are golden
And we've got to get ourselves
Back to the garden
Then can I walk beside you
I have come here to lose the smog
Well maybe it is just the time of year
Or maybe it's the time of man
I don't know who I am
But ya know life is for learning
We are stardust
We are golden
And we've got to get ourselves
Back to the garden
By the time we got to Woodstock
We were half a million strong
And everywhere there was song and celebration
And I dreamed I saw the bombers
Riding shotgun in the sky
And they were turning into butterflies
Above our nation
We are stardust
Billion-year-old carbon
We are golden
Caught in the devil's bargain
And we've got to get ourselves
Back to the garden

The songs that are true will remain when all the rest have gone
Lovely xx
Bliss..
It's always struck me how a song which is ostensibly a celebration of a culture-defining event could end in such mournful dirge-like way. Was Joni seeing the future?
She was the 60s and 70s !!!!!!! PEACE TO THE WORLD !!!!!!!!!!!!!
turn this off after listening to matthews southern Comfort LOL
These were the offers of this ancient wild world: live for free, share, take care, have fun and live together. Unfortunately, we were so focused on the change of era that we did not have the time or the awareness to organize us. We looked at the world as a rocket in the sky and gave caution to operettas’musicians to free us. However the spirit is still there, waiting to be recognized and conscious again and again until it is everywhere in elevation to the Paradise of Utopians and other unconscious dreamers!
I would've loved woodstock
I'm 18...listening to this feeling like a teenager in 60's
Cet enregistrement est la plus belle chose qui existe sur Terre.
She was so good its like time stops every time i hear a song from her.
Still prefer the CSN&Y version.
FYI.... Joni Mitchell never made it to Woodstock
RUTH FISHER
What an Amazing job Miss Mitchell has done with this song. Absolutely Amazing !!!!!!!! Great job Joni !!!!!!
Paul Grubbs it’s her song.
@The1WhoKnowsTheTruth I really thought it was a cover by Crosby Stills and Nash. I truly thought they did the song 1st.
Paul-That's alright. Everyone does. Don't tell anyone okay, but I like the CSNY version better. I highly respect Joni though.
Woodstock was the last hurrah for the Libs, anti-war, anti-establishment, anti-government, love, peace and freedom. What happened?
Too bad all these peaceful, loving gentle clowns later became BMW driving assholes tailgating people in the '80s. Phffft.
Anyone else hear TOOLS invincible in the beginning? Like after 0:35? “Feeling time, Bearing Down...”
Beautiful Joni, who opened the minds and hearts of billions and allowed women to speak their hearts everywhere. Bless you always, Goddess of song, poetry and painting! xxx <3
In the late 60’s I saw Joni at a utilities office (Water and Power maybe?) near the Silver Lake/Echo Park section
of Los Angeles. She was young and fresh, apple cheeked and beautiful! She was telling them to send her bill to her accountant in New York. What a moment. Godbless you Joni for what you gave us!
long piano fingers work best, just like joni's - nice vocals all around
She's like a siren! Her voice is beautifully inescapable
Death is now hunting or has found all these people.....
I never realized this song was about Woodstock!
Rubbish
And I wonder how many of them are the very "deplorables" that have led to the Trump revolution now?
Or was it the ones who supported the National Guard at Kent State?
sounds as if somebody is standing on the tail of a cat - listen to matthew's southern comfort
Well, I came upon a child of God
He was walking along the road
And I asked him, Tell me, where are you going
This he told me
Said, I'm going down to Yasgur's Farm
Gonna join in a rock and roll band
Got to get back to the land and set my soul free
We are stardust, we are golden
We are billion year old carbon
And we got to get ourselves back to the garden
Well, then can I roam beside you?
I have come to lose the smog,
And I feel myself a cog in somethin' turning
And maybe it's the time of year
Yes and maybe it's the time of man
And I don't know who I am
But life is for learning
We are stardust, we are golden
We are billion year old carbon
And we got to get ourselves back to the garden
We are stardust, we are golden
We are billion year old carbon
And we got to get ourselves back to the garden
By the time we got to Woodstock
We were half a million strong
And everywhere was a song and a celebration
And I dreamed I saw the bomber death planes
Riding shotgun in the sky,
Turning into butterflies
Above our nation
We are stardust, we are golden
We are caught in the devils bargain
And we got to get ourselves back to the garden
Never forget to "Let Yoyr Freak Flag Fly".... Age has nothing to do with it ! It comes from within.
i am sure that the new generation dont know this....
One of my all time favorites from Joni. Blessings man, thanks so much!
Would you PLEASE take STOCK of yourselves?!🤨✌
Woodstock the song - wonderful. Woodstock the event - eh......dunno....Had Joni been able to perform there, it would have made a difference.
I am starting my own hippieville!!
Late I mean.
OH MAN!AMAZING VOICE,AMAZING SONG!I was definateley born 20 years to early(22/12/1967)
And while you boomers rocked out to this, you squandered your inheritance. Turned this country into a shithole. Thanks, we’ll keep the jams but you’re going into forced retirement
She wasn’t there...she was already booked to play some where else and she couldn’t get out of the gig. Still a haunting and beautiful song though
Joni never went too Woodstock... She wrote this as a kid.. (there is an interview she did that explains it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vo7ptzwxGzg
Sounds kinda like "Bad Company"
*the only bad thing about this video/ music compilation, is that it's not longer*
Wow. To get to be that careless...
Six Feet Under is hell of a show.
This song seems like "requiem" for that generation. So,This is beautiful !
I've come here, to hear her lose it When she cries: "SMOG!"
uno dei più bei brani di musica leggera che siano mai stati scritti
THE HIPPIES AINT DONE YET !!!!! PISS ON TRUMP JUST LIKE NIXON !!!!!!

hi thanks for posting this. check out my remix of "Woodstock" from "shadows and light" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YUf_m_Y_53k&list=RDYUf_m_Y_53k&start_radio=1
I was born in '71. This song epitomizes the legendary astral magic that was the '60s to me. It such a beautiful song.
those who were alive in the 60s and 70s .. how lucky you are... so much great music.. so many great artists with real talent .. compared to the awful music we have today
AH...THIS IS A TIME OF INNOCENCE. WHEN I LISTEN TO ALL THE MUSIC OF THE LATE 60'S/EARLY 70'S I AM TRANSFERRED BACK TO THIS. WOODSTOCK. I WISHED I HAD BEEN ABLE TO GO. HAPPY BIRTHDAY.
This is the version!!!
the chorus at 3:00 should be sampled...
I am revisiting this page not sure after how long... next time you will be here you'll know... and maybe what made you come here again...
So beautiful.......
Makes me want to throw rocks at the music from my generation...
Screw the early 90's, LOL!!!!
This was when they had real music!!!
Its still alive man
Great song. Too bad that the good times die and the bad times survive it all.
only if you're a pessimist
Or a realist.
One of the greatest songs ever written in the greatest era of music there ever was
Only White people can do this.
Listening in 2018
Idk if any song defines the Boomer generation more than this song. Granted the Boomers had it made and ruined this country for the most part, but hey fantastic music! And a very idyllic dream.
Fuck this Song Creeps me, there is deep meaning to this song a hidden message to everyone who want to live in freedom and escape the prison world we live in
We are star-dusT,we are goL-Den..Peace,Love,Happiness and Trust to us all. Some of us have never left the garDen,some have remained faithfuLL and some have remaineD stars.Others well..-C'mon people now, smiLe on your brothers and sisTers.Everybody get together.Try to Love one another Right Now,Right Now,Right Now...The woRLD NeeDs iT,ReaLLy DoeS.

Many of you out there who maybe didn't make a move to journey on to some new adventure in those 60s or 70s. I, for sure did and when the time came from many high experiences and staying faithful on doing new changes in my life, And I thank The Lord that I didn't get to off the guidance that I was finding to enlighten me, and I believe He showed me the Truth His Way and "The Life" Praise Our Creator and Love all His Precious lives .with eyes ears nose mouths families etc. take a full on act of strong giving enough time for your Loving Creator Father to eating what he gave us on His Holy Ground, the fruits, grains, and vegetables. When you can clearly see to act upon doing this for the love and peace He will then show you His True Blessings and Miracles, then keep on journeying in His Loving ,Caring Faith Brothers and Sisters Amen.
I was going to clarify on the what I was truly wanting to say on every beautiful living animal all loved and belong to the Prince of Peace-The Good Shepard. The other giving lessons Our Only True Teacher is to know he wasn't fully interpreted in any of the Bibles. For man who has been deceived since all false religious leaders ( Christian or other) has been taking money to teach and justify their deliberate acts of killing and eating that which Our Loving Father Creator put here His Holy Ground to be loving and caring for their families. And so since we all must first come back, as the prodigal child and ask the Father for the strength to open up our hearts, mind and eyes to check out what you have in your hand, before you put in your mouth then realize is this anything of The Loving God . And then we pray to Him to help show you to look at those ingredients, and know the fruits, grains, vegetables and nuts ,is what Jesus, The Good Shepard was eating. Also don't eat the Bondage of the cows chickens, fish or bees, so No eggs milk or honey. Go with peace and the loving Faith of God Amen
beautiful but sad...like leon Russell sang,,we gotta stop racing to oblivian
love this version takes me back to a better time.
Dionysian festival. Just selfish pleasure. But, yet a desire for community that was lost in the suburbs.
Mitchell missed it as her manager convinced her it would be better for her career to appear on the Dick Cavett Show. Another one of life's cosmic ironies. Joni is a riddle wrapped in an enigma.
Crosby,Stills,Nash and Young did it better
fucking hippies....ruined everything. Nixon was right. Bunch of creeps.
This song still reaches the younger generation.. not very often, but I'm here.. that's gotta count for something
Stay golden
What a laugh, stupid people on cannabis smiling themselves to death and shitting in the fields . . .
the Stills Nash Crosby is a pop version of Woodstock...Joni Mitchells version is the true one,the soul and heart!!!
I wrote a reply about how I truly loved her version in agogobell28 just 2 above your comment and another some were above that one, anyway we thank Joni for having this for all and our hearts go out to all the Peacemakers in our lives
Close anyway. The whole thing was commercialized. She is close though.
Such a good song. Actually makes me cry now that all the hippies are gone or going. Such a superficial world we live in right now.
Surely one of the greatest songs to encapsulate a very, very special era that can never be recreated. Sung by a truly magical artist..........
I wish i was around at this time, just to experience woodstock festival. There seems to be nothing cool around for young people who like this kind of music
Still love and listen to these.
4:34 to 5:10 is my favorite part of the song... amazing
Beautiful!
How I wish I could have been there! I am one generation too late.
But I did get to go to the second one!
3rd going on now...
What a sad contrast to today's reality
I was young at this time..and know most of her songs. I was surprised to find out she was not even there..her friends were though. We are all one.
Should time travelling be possible in the future, I would certainly like to make a short trip to Woodstock – just to see, enjoy great music, smoke some good weed and, perhaps, spend a nice time with some beautiful hippie girl O:)
We must get back to the garden we simply must
thank you so much for posting....NOT forgotten...don't stop your (or her) transmission...super powerful ! :D
Remembering a war that was so useless and caused so many, many pointless deaths.
But, she wasn't there.
This Woman is "The Phoenix of Womanhood" !
✌PEACE✌
I enjoyed that, thank you
It's true, actually. We are stardust. Save the hydrogen, though. That stuff is nearly 14 billion year old Big Bang stuff. And the carbon is older than Joni thought at the time; at least 4.2 billion years. But it so true we are stardust. https://apod.nasa.gov/apod/image/1710/Nucleosynthesis2_WikipediaCmglee_1080.jpg
Change is coming...'rise like lions after slumber, in unvanquishable number.
